I have a 1999 1.8T Passat and I've been having a problem.
When driving up a modest incline, with the engine around 3000rpm, I start loosing a bit of power. If I put my foot down the car will accelerate but not smoothly. I'm pretty sure it's not the turbo, to me it feels like the HT leads and sparks need replacing. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar problems Read more
I have just been offered a K reg Discovery TDi (2.5) 7 seater at 94000 miles for £3,500.
The car currently belongs to friends or ours. The lady in question has just gone from full time to part time employment and cannot afford to run it.
The condition. Not bad, though a bit of rust is starting to show around the tops of the front door/windscreen pillars. I haven't checked it over completely yet, but that is my first observation. The inside looks clean on first inspection.
Having taken a quick look at the Auto Trader website, I have seen K reg Diesels from about £2.5K (mileage not stated or over 130k).
I am trying to pursuade her that she needs my P reg 1.8 Xantia in P ex.
Any thoughts? Although prices in the south west are higher than other areas, how does this compare nationally?
I'll let you know how this progresses.

Oh I forgot to mention
It has the remainder of a 12 month mechanical warranty on it.
I'll get this signed over to me for the fee, and go from there.

Not sure whether this is 'technical' or not.
Local factors have 5 litre containers of 'Ankor Wax', a waxy rustproofing coating made by Morris Lubricants. Only just over £13, so cheaper than Waxoyl (which I'm unconvinced about, anyway). Apparently its used by farmers to rustproof tractors and combines - so you'd expect it to work.
Has anyone used Ankor Wax to rustproof a car? A websearch brings up nothing of any relevance on this stuff. Read more
Hi all,
My 2000 Lupo 1.4 16V has just been in for a new clutch - turns out that the actuating arm had snapped! yes, really.
I thought the cable had snapped so fitted a new one, and this involved removing the top of the airbox and filter to gain access to the clutch cable.
I noticed that there is quite a bit of oil on the \'downstream\' side of the air filter, especially around the edges and leading toward the throttle body. Is this usual, or does it indicate a problem? There is a rubber pipe leading from this section of the airbox which I had assumed was the brake servo vacuum, but could it be an oil breather?
Anyway...Got the car back from the place that did the clutch, and the idle speed now fluctuates between 800 and 1200 rpm. I\'ve read previous posts here which suggest it might be due to carp building up in a sensor somewhere, but I wondered if it might have been caused by disconnecting the battery when the clutch was changed. It seems a bit of a concidence that it\'s just started happening now.
Does the engine management system lose and then re-learn settings such as this if it has been disconnected? I\'ve done about 30 miles since the work was done.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Erratic idle sounds like an air leak or a loose hose not connected properly after the clutch work was done. Check that all the connections are right on the inlet side of the throttle body. If it is drawing in air from somewhere it may upset the idle speed.
How many other backroomers got totally hacked off with the "Emergency Repairs" which closed off lane 3 near Clackett services in both directions this morning ? I queued from virtually the start of the M26, to find that the absolute chaos was caused by a coned off section no longer than 200m. To add insult to injury, there was no workmen or equipment visible ! aaaaarrrggghhhh.

It\'s simple Robbo - when they bring in tolls on the motorways, they move the cones. Then everyone thinks how much better it is now we\'re paying for it!
Could anyone tell me what fuel consumption I could expect from a Volvo V40 diesel - not sure whether it's the common rail.
Thanks, Read more
A tricky question with no info to go on but I would have thought at least 40 mpg and probably 45 mpg. Unless you do the well known things that give high consumption of course..
Can anyone recommend a good one, preferably in the Midlands/E.Anglia/S.East? Read more
topaktas,
Is Chelmsford any good?
If you are under 26, cost is reduced from £85-00 to £40-00 including the books required.

I'd be interested to hear any pros and cons regarding fitting this to a new diesel x-type. Will it be worth it ? The 'basic' system is about £300 fitted + subscription, next up is £450 + sub. Read more
97%? If it is that high why is it not mentioned anywhere on Tracker's web site, or on the glossy mag I got from them a month ago.
I would have thought they would sing such a figure from the rooftops.

I recently had the misfortune to suffer a snapped camshaft drive belt which of course bent the valves. The garage I use had the head repaired and refitted it. Everything seems ok apart from noisy tappets, worse when cold, but still audible when hot. Went back to the garage but was told they couldn't do anything about it and it would probably settle down!
I've changed the oil to 10w-40 but this has not made any difference. The engine is a 2 litre D-Tech DOHC which I think was manufactured by GM Holden. Have read recent correspondance on a Vauxhall Omega which had the same symptons, but it turned out that it was a broken exhaust manifold stud.

My '03 Fiesta 1.4 Ghia experiences ignition problems where it doesn't start first time. It doesn't happen all the time but it is very annoying it's been in twice already to my local ford where they updated the engine management software in the car (on both visits). I thought they finally fixed the problem but just recently the problem has come back, this time I noticed the little LCD panels (fuel and mileage) in my dashboard light up flashing and displaying the message EAC FAIL. I've got an appointment next week for my local Ford to take a look at the car....(this will be their 3rd time looking at this problem!). Has any other fiesta owners experienced this also? Is the problem been fixed?! I'll have to wait until next week to hear what Ford have to say to me. Read more
There were problems like this on early build Fiesta 1.4 and the only person who can fix it is your dealer I'm afraid. They'll probably have to reflash the latest software again.
It is possible, although unlikely, that there is a fault with one of the components but this should show up on a diagnostic check. Let us know if you're 3rd time lucky!
Take it to a dealer and have it checked. There are a number of components associated with the turbo and fuel system which could be causing the problem.
