Hi
I am sorry that this thread has been covered before.
I am about to change the fluid on my Golf 4 TDI, will I see any difference in performance in up grading to DOT 5.1 from DOT 4. Also how will this effect the use of the clutch as the fluid is used for both brake & clutch.
Thanks
Hugh

Well I've just met a second 'face' from the BackRoom - an eminently nice person called Rob the Bus from somewhere oop Norf (somewhere very rural near the villages of Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and Scunthorpe). He's finally decided to join us all down in the smoke for a while so I'm hoping to get to know him better.
Regulars will know that HF and I met Mark and his little 'un last year (seems like only yesterday) and Mrs V. and I are looking forward to meeting another member of this august club in the very near future but you'll have to wait with bated breath to find out who I'm afraid.
Has anyone else met up since I started the BackRoom Get Together thread last year ? If not, why not ?
It's really nice to be able to put a face to the posts. Read more

Fiesta 97 Handbrake -little or no braking effort to the n/s wheel. Noticed having trouble holding on a hill. Also when h'brake been applied for a while, a quiet bang can be heard from the drum after releasing the h'brake & moving off. (Almost as if the shoes were seizing on and then breaking free.
I plan to take a look at this tonight so I'm not really after a list of suggestions more a "This is a common fault and is due to the self a adjuster sticking" sort of thing which will hopefully take me straight to the problem.
Thanks in advance. Read more
Probably one of the already mentioned, but just in case it turns out not to be, it might help to know my 97 Fiesta unbabalanced back brakes (failed 3rd MOT) turned out to be due to a faulty master cyclinder. I wonder whether there are a few of these about ? It was the instant response when I rang Ford after I had made sure the other bits were OK.
At low revs in all gears, my daughter's '96 Punto 55S (60k on the clock) is hesitant to accelerate, but get it above 2,000 revs & it goes OK.
I've put some Redex throught the carb again & it seemed to improve it. She's filling up with Optimax now to see if that keeps up the improvement, as previously this action only seemed short term.
Anyone had a similar problem & can give me some advice, as I'm not totally convinced this approach will work?

Redex added to the fuel tank in the correct concentration will not cause a problem. The original suggestion in this thread was to administer it directly into the throttle body, which is not a good idea on a car with an Oxygen Sensor and a Cat.
Redex is a very good upper cylinder lubricant, but even their injection additive is not a particularly good injector cleaner. The best products, IMHO, are from Forté (only available from the trade ie. a specialist engine tuner/diagnostician or a garage) or VW's own-brand additive available from any VAG dealer. Best available (injector cleaner) on the high street is probably Wynns or STP.

Just had my 98S Mondeo with PowerShift Tartarini LPG conversion serviced by a Ford dealer that (used to) offer LPG conversions. I have a few questions following it that I would really appreciate some guidance on.
What should be changed along with the cambelt? Any tensioners, pulleys etc?
What fuel should the car be emmisions tested on? Its registered as petrol (too early to be taxed as LPG). Previous years its been Petrol, this year LPG, with the certificate saying LPG? Is this anygood to me, should Plod request to see my docs?
Finally (yes it was a bad day) They had a poster for special offer on wheel trims £30 for 4 (usually £50). I was told when I asked for a set that they don't do that offer, its a Ford Promotion, but could offer me a 20% discount. Surely they should honour it if advertised next to their service & parts reception?
Many thanks

Still.....the car went through the test OK......perhaps it is better to let sleeping dogs lie! Even though the offer is advertised there (prominently) you don't want to become a 'problem' customer, do you?!
Could anyone recommend a cam belt tension tool. I have seen a Sykes tool and a sealey tool in magazines. Both of these look suitable for my diy needs ( once or twice a year). I would pay up to about £200.

I entirely agree with you about Sykes-Pickavant being top end and Sealey the bottom. Look in "Car Mechanics" and you'll see Sealey stuff is a bit cheap and cheerful, shall we say?
I still can't see why you need a tension tool, though.
Setting things by eye and by feel is the way I've always done them and not come unstuck, yet.
I can see a tool, with an objective rather than subjective setting, being OK for someone unskilled. Just set it to this number. In practice I think you get much better settings with experience and "feel".
Send me your £200 and I'll come and set your tension, once or twice a year!
Does anyone know if you can fit/swop a Cooper ECU into a Mini ONE???

I have a personal plate on my car (came with the car such things don't bother me) and I am astonished to learn that very similar plates are on sale for £1,500 (via the plate search on this site).
Has anyone tried to sell a plate to these companies? What sort of differential to the sale price is on offer? Are they going to offer me £50 for something they're knocking out at £1,500? Read more
You can make a few quid - I bought one for £495 sold it three years later for £1275 ( so it probably went for £1500 ).
The big boys are likely to have most of the initials and traditional car models like 911, 355 and all that. So the next best thing for smaller players who just want to have a bit of fun with the market is to try second guess the success of future car models that are due. Then hope the model hangs around. For example; when Merc came up with the SLK/CLK those letters were available at a modest price direct from DVLA.
Merc is perfect for pp sales. So provided the models were up to scratch it was obvious that SLK/CLK plates would increase in value rapidly. If it wa on an M plate so much the better.
From this summer, I would think anyone who has a number that contains RX 8 in some legible form would be looking at the same thing. These Mazdas are likely to go well I would think.
I am thinking of buying a warranty to cover my car. Anyone has any experience with Warranty Wise or could recommend a similar used car warranty. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Read more
Have you tried Warranty Direct? Link provided to the left, under the red menu bar. IIRC, there's been a recent discussion about them. If I find it, I'll post it later.
SWMBO has just got home and has been stuck in a jam for 45 minutes. No change in engine temp but three times the engine moved up to 3000 rpm of its' own accord. Any ideas? Read more
Very grateful adam, thanks a lot. Have printed off your response. Today the engine behaved perfectly well. On monday when this happened the car was in a stop/start queue for over an hour. Typically of course, our local Fiat dealer closed down last month! Thanks again.

I cannot understand why Ford went to the trouble of issuing a self adhesive warning label to warn against mixing with Super DOT4. I have still got the label (and have checked it), so it is not a figment of my failing imagination!
