I have a friend who\'s just got a summer job as an agency delivery driver (delivering cars to and from garages all over the country)

He\'s seen other drivers at the agency using sat-nav systems that swap from car to car and plug in to the cig lighter, and is wanting to know what\'s available and where from

I have no idea, so if anybody has any recommendations, please let me know

Seems Autoexpress are doing a review of satnav this week. Haven't read it yet, but may be worth the pennies.

Question Oil Changes
BMDUBYA

Advice please. About 6k miles ago, my car Rover 1994 218sld turbo (turbo diesel) went for an oil change at a national fast fit centre, I went to the same place today for an oil change and they have told me that they dont do oil changes for turbo diesel's because they dont have the correct oil! Well I have fished out my old invoice and I have been charged for QXR oil which I believe is Duckhams, cant find anything on the web, but can anyone answer the following please.

1) Would this oil be suitable for my car?
2) If not what damage could/has been done? Read more

There is a QXR Diesel oil available, in addition to 'normal' QXR. The normal stuff is probably OK, as most 'standard' oils are both petrol and diesel rated. Obviously, if they used the diesl specific version there is absolutely no problem.

I know this is a motorcycle question, but anyone tried any of these helmets? Read more

Try the BMW flip-top lids, I found them more comfortable than other makes but I guess it all depends on the shape of your head !

Is it normal for the electric radiator cooling fan to be running all the time when the Climate Control is on? The car is 2002 Focus 2 litre Ghia Automatic. This fan is extremely noisy and the car can be heard coming from quite a distance.
Cheers for any info. Read more

Its a double fan in the Focus - when the a/c is on the LHS fan is always on and it is very noisy (I never thought so until I changed for an Audi which runs silently), but at least you'll know if it packs up!!!

I am a non-technical person so need comments, please, on the following fairly basic question.

This morning I had some work done on N/S/R brake drum. The mechanic took O/S/R wheel off as well and later told me that he had adjusted both brakes.

I then did a 50 mile high speed journey before calling at a tyre depot. The fitter there drew my attention to the fact that O/S/R wheel was very hot...binding brake??!!

He said that there was a risk of the whole thing seizing up.

Was he right? Might I have ended up hitting the central reservation crash barrier?

I have to go back to garage after lunch...hence the urgency.

It may not be the mechanic's fault. The slave cylinder,or h/brake cable may be seized.

Working with the IAM we have access to this site;

Have a look and check if you have picked up a ticket - it is completely legal to have a look.

Fell for it: especially as it came up with somewhere that I had been, albeit a day earlier (just the wrong side of midnight) and I was flying..

Smell it? I was sitting in it!

I am just about to get my Vauxhall serviced just to maintain the warranty and breakdown cover for the year. I have had an itemised quote for the service and noticed that they wanted to use 9 units of oil at a total cost of £36. It didn't specify the units (litre or half-litre) but the car uses 4.5 litres to fill.

The cost seems very expensive for 4.5 litres and, compared to trade prices, the 9 litres wouldn't be exactly cheap. Why would they wantto use 9 litres of oil?

Before I query what they propose - am I having my leg pulled here? Read more

1 unit = 0.5 litres of oil.

Standard Vauxhall service pricing.

If you don't like it, I've yet to find a Vx garage which wouldn't use your own oil (provided it's to spec) and refund the oil cost.

Also remember, Vx quote a fixed price for servicing which you I imagine agreed to. The £36 just forms part of it...

Just acquired a T-reg (1999) Peugeot 306 Estate with the HDI engine. Went to Halfords to buy a technical handbook, but the Haynes one, which claims to cover all models of the 306 up to T/1999 does NOT include the HDI engine. As you'd expect, the owner's handbook is sparse, to say the least. I shall feel a bit insecure without any know-how when I take the car abroad soon.

Any ideas? I'd buy the Haynes book (for the bits apart from the engine) if I could get a separate book on the engine. Halfords cannot help. Thanks!

Thanks to all you guys who supplied info I wouldn't have known where to begin to find. I take the point about the HDI engine probably being a non-DIY proposition for most of us, but not to be able even to identify components makes me feel kind of uncomfortable. (Never had a diesel before.) It's a male thing!

Never heard of Russek handbooks, but I'll investigate. My French might be good enough to manage a French-language handbook (with a bit of help from a dictionary) and the tip about the Haynes Citroen Xsara is useful too.

Halfords tell me Haynes may eventually catch up with a revised 306 handbook, but not to hold my breath for it.

Cheers,
Chris
