Hi there,

My wife's Toyota Carib ( a 4WD 1.8 Corolla Jap Import) failed its WOF (like the MOT) the other day, due to brake imbalance. The deal is is that the rear RH brake is 36% down on the rear LH brake.

I had a mechanic take the drums off and clean the brakes, but on re-testing the RH brake was still 33% down.

Toyota have the car right now, but haven't yet found the problem. They've checked the slave cylinders but no leaks there....

The car was built in 1995 and has ABS with discs at the front and drums at the back.

Any ideas/suggestions I can pass onto to Toyota?

I thought that maybe the brake pipe MIGHT be bulging on that side, but haven't yet told Toyota this. Read more

Got the car back, and it passed its Warrant :)

Toyota replaced the rear proportioning valve, which fixed most of the problem. They then fitted new rear pads because the old ones were "contaminated". Result - braking is now balanced across the back brakes !!

Pads are not covered by the warranty, but they haven't charged me for them, so I suspect that they were contaminated by the mechanic when they were trying to fix the problem...

Anyway, the car's all legal now for another 6 months (Warrants only last 6 months in NZ).

BTW - they must have had the ABS unit out, because they'd un-plumbed the washer bottle to get to it. I know this because the washer jets for the front and rear were swapped over by mistake.

Not sure if this should be under "technical", but any words of advice/warning as to how to minimise paintwork damage etc when putting on (and eventually, one hopes, removing) "L" plates? First-born's 17th birthday is approaching. Read more

If the learner won't be the exclusive driver of the car, I would advise any method that isn't frustating to repeatedly attach and remove the plates.

Plenty of people don't bother and leave them on all the time - you can regularly find 'learners' driving on their own down the motorway. As the L plates get misused, many people ignore them so I don't think it would make an enormous difference as to where they are placed.

If the car to learn in is a hatchback, there would be little difference between having a plate in the rear window and on the bodywork. Putting it in the offside corner would make reverse parking easier.

my wife's Nissan Almera has got a flat batterry. Can i start this with jump leads from my Octavia TDI. i know it's a daft question, but something at the back of my mind tells me no because of the different types of fuel.

I have found the 'rejuvenating' tablets from the accessory shop appear to give a slight improvement for a time, but I can't help thinking they are probably over-priced.

on a lhd car I would say: battery-floor!

on a rhd car: dunno: windscreen, doorseal (not only rubber, but also the plastic behind the door-panel), or even a leaking battery-floor-panel

remove battery, check state of metal, cleanout, weld in :-)

During the hellish process of moving house, My Partner has inadvertantly lost / discarded all her documents relating to an insurance policy on a car which she has just sold, but the policy was paid in advance until November 2003.

Thing Is she really can't remember who the insurance was with. We've tried ringing round dozens, but to no avail.

Problem Is now we need to provide proof of full NCB before she can insure a new car properly, or indeed transfer this policy to the future vehicle.

Is there any database we could consult, the registration number was L 54 RUA - if this helps.

Really struggling to think of more ideas. . .
HELP !

Have applied to Experian for Data File, Not entirely convinced that
it will have car insurance details though, seems more concerned with
Credit cards etc, now I expect that if you paid the
insurance in instalments, this would show up as an entry because
it is a credit agreement.

Surely the answer to all this is your bank?

Does the 100th joke close this thread???
Anyway - sitting in a queue on the M25 in August, windows down, I asked the Irish driver in the next lane;
'What do you think of the M25?'
He replied;'
'I tink they're innocent'

I am just woundering if anyone can help me with this one. My car a 1.25 fiesta zetec is due an oil change very shortly and was woundering which oil is the best for engine protection and fuel economy. Motorcraft 5w30 OR Castrol GTX Magnatec 5w30.
Also while we are on the subject of oil, Are the gearbox's really sealed for life or would it not hurt if i changed the gearbox oil while i am at it. What Gearbox oil do they recommend. Also what are the benifits of changing the gearbox oil. The car is only 5 years old and has got 32000 miles on the clock.

Personally I have yet to be convinced of the 'magnatec, bit.

>>Glad it's not just me! Assuming it's based on some sort of magnetic property, how does that help in a largely aluminium engine?

It may be aluminium casings but the main friction parts are all steel or chromed steel. Rings, pots, valves etc...

Hello just wandering how to stop my drivers side electric window from "sticking". I have to push on it for it too move down sometimes and the other day when i had the window fully down when i got back it wouldn't move up and i had to get a pair of plyers to pull on it for it to move up again, i don't want to be stuck with the window up or down especially as the weather seems to be turning sunny (touch wood). Any suggestions will much appreciated. Read more

belive i got a can of silicon spray from halfords. I can't remeber how much it was but it wasn't expensive. I used it on the sunroof runners as well which improved the operation a lot.

Good luck

Hi All

I have a VW Golf 1300 81,000 miles Mk2.

I am going to change the gearbox oil. I have bought the correct spec oil (Comma 80W/90).
If I bought a more expensive oil i.e. Castrol 80W/90 will this improve the gearbox performance and life?

Or is there no difference?

Thanks

Andrew

Is there any difference between using synthetic gear oil and normal gear oil with the same viscosity spec?

Does anybody in the BR own a Nokia 8210?? This may sound odd but the display seems to keep malfunctioning what it will do it will display writing on the screen upside down and backwards. If i place it next to a mirror and turn it upside down the writing in the reflection will read correctly!!! When i turn the phone off and turn it back on it goes back to normal. I haven't been concerned about it until now because it seems to do it every hour or half hour or so and its getting quite annoying. I think it eventually do it all the time. Has anybody had anything like this on any phone??? I don't really want to have to buy a new phone and am a bit annoyed since i payed 200 quid for it about 1 and half years ago. Could it be the battery playing up??? Is it worth having it repaired? Any advice that will save me money will be much appreciated! Read more
