is there a seal broken or something, if so where am i looking for it

Most likely cause? A split somewhere in the rubber seal that runs all the way around the passenger door opening. The seal is just pushed into place, so you can easily pull it away from the body to inspect it.

well the water is leaking in from the front somewhere, when teh carpetw as lifted up it was coming from the engine bay, like the rain wasnt draining away correctly i am unable to see any seals, but i have heard that the older golfs have leaks like mine and that its the seals in the engine area, i have no idea where to look in the egine area, anyone have any ideas, the water comes from behind the dash board

what year Polo?
i seem to remember that older Polo's suffered from rusty battery trays, bit like old Escorts

1990 h plate
the battery is on the drivers side and the leak is on the passenger side?

Has the car got a sunroof ? If so check the drain tube that runs down the inside of the a-pillar, if its cracked or split apart the water runs down the pillar into the car rather than down the pipe to the inner wheel arch.

my octavia leaked too, but on the drivers side - cause was split door seal. oddly enough, it still gets a small leak now, but not nearly as bad.
Golfs are prone to this aren\'t they?

Hi, This could well be coming in around the heater fan assembly or even by the cable harness near the fuse box. do you part the car nose up a slope as this will cause the area to retain water if the water vent hole is blocked up, extreme right side in the bulkhead compartment. Peter

check the drain holes either side of the rain water run off tray under the bonnet just below the wind screen are not blocked, water can build up and seep in to the car.

it doesnt have a sun roof, and how can i tell the drainage points are blocked?? it sound slike it could be that problem but i dont know how to check to see if there is a blockage
thanks

I had exactly the same problem with my '87 Polo. The cure was the replacement of the plastic membrane that creates a seal underneath the inner door cover.

|
use a watering can and pour the water over possible water ingress points and or how fast if at all the water drains away, use thin plastic covered net curtain wire to clear any leafs, spiders whatever, best of luck.

on a lhd car I would say: battery-floor!
on a rhd car: dunno: windscreen, doorseal (not only rubber, but also the plastic behind the door-panel), or even a leaking battery-floor-panel
remove battery, check state of metal, cleanout, weld in :-)
