Got a light scratches on the windscreen and my car dealer worsen it after polishing. Now could see swirl mark on my windscreen.
Is there any DIY method to fix up this problem.

My car dealer in Malaysia offers to replace my new car windscreen at no cost to me but I dont feel that comfortable being concern on water leakage or other issues related later on.

Please help. Read more

There has been quite a lot of discussion in this forum about removing windscreen scratches and the consensus is that there is no way of removing them. Having tried various ways myself over the years, I agree.

I would accept the offer of a new screen but would insist on having an experienced person fitting it. As you suggest, replacing screens does occasionally lead to problems but the chances are that all will be OK if it is done by a professional fitter.

My 93 volcane TD has just met an untimely - and terminal - engine seizure. With 94k on the clock, I reckon the car's still got plenty of life left in it, and a fellow ZX enthusiast has offered to fit a 'new' engine for £200-ish. All I've got to do now is find one... any ideas/suggestions/price guides on getting something reasonably reliable? Or am I just being sentimental about a car that's probably only worth about £1200 anyway? Problem is, it's comfortable, economical, handles well - but I guess all that was with the last engine in it. Advice/suggestions much appreciated.... Read more

I had a 1.9 TD engine re-built last year, total cost, incleding new valves, con-rods, pistons, crank, turbo, re-bore, mechanics time at trade rates etc was £900. Due to other grief caused by the lake that I had driven into, sold the car once it was rnning again, but was assured months later that it was still going strong. Wish I had kept it now, instead of the cavalier that is my current everyday car. would recomend a rebuild over a scrappers engine anytime, because that way you know what you are getting.

I now have an FLT, in its original briefcase with some books and a lot of bits. I am slowly building up a picture of how it works by playing with it on my Uno 1.0ie.

Would still appreciate hearing from anyone who still has an FLT or has used one of these units in the past and can tell me anything about it, its functions, the use of the blanks and test
sensors etc, etc.

Also seeking pods and tech sheets.

Any input much appreciated, Thank you.

Forgive me if this has been posted before.
The search engine didn't reveal it, but then I don't trust the search engine! ;)

Knowing McLaren's reputation for protecting their interests, I'd love to know what they think of it!

Me? I can be handy with a spanner when I need to be, but I wish I had his skills!

Bearing in mind the post comes from a VW forum, I like one of the the taglines, too: Why are there no Beetles with you guys? Because most Beetle drivers have bedtimes! :-)

i have just been shopping around for two new tyres for my v70 best quote i got for pirreli p6000s 205 50 16 was £158 from selecta tyre, i then phoned a local branch of kwik fit as its a lot closer, they quoted me a price of £245! when i enquired of the branch manager if they would be prepared match selecta tyres price(or come close) the answer was no, take it or leave it,as i prepared to "leave it" his parting shot was "there are plenty of people happy to pay our prices"... amazing!! was this just a one off or is this typical of the entire companys attitude? i for one will certainly be avoiding them in future Read more

My experience with Kwik Fit is fairly limited, but over the last 13 years of motoring (since I was 12 and helped my dad out with running my mother's car and he had a company one) Kwik Fit have been expensive on things that had a list price (such as tyres) and extrmely helpful and friendly on anything else. While I don't necessarily respect the company for its prices, I trust them implicitly to only come up with problems that actually need solving and would have no problems with taking a car there if I didn't know that a rival would be cheaper in my specific case.

Question brake pad life
peteH

What is reasonable for a modern brake pad?

i.e is 12500 miles reasonable? with discs changed every other time (i.e every 25000miles)

A Renault 10 I used to own back in the 70's used to go through a full set of pads (disc brakes all round) every 6,000 miles, compare that to my previous car, a Ford mondeo, which had done 40,000 miles and the pads were only half worn down when I passed it on.

Need to get the brake carrier off to change rear discs (Mk2 Gti). Will an 8mm allen key do the trick/it is actually a 7mm/will I need a socket drive because a key isn\'t up to it?

Thanks in advance

From memory doing mine last year, they were tight! Even using a socket set 1/2" drive hex driver.

Also you will need to make up a tool to screw the pistons back in. I used a bolt (forget size) with a couple of nuts locked together on it, so it could be driven from a standard socket set. It is still in the toolbox suitably tagged.

Question Plugs
Peter

Is there any advantage in changing the spark plugs from say WR7DC down to WR6DC or in fact upwards to WR8DC. I am going on a long touring holiday with a Volvo 740 and anything to improve the mpg would not go amiss. Buying another car is not an option.

Thanks Read more

Chas{P}

The number in the middle of the part number (Bosch in this case) refers to the heat range of the plug.

There is no economy advantage in putting plugs in of a different heat range and it could cause the symptoms already stated by PeteF.

Best way to achieve maximum economy IMO would be to make sure the car has been serviced properly before going on holiday and avoiding a roofrack or towing if at all possible.
