This weekend only at Safeways:

Every time you shop at Safeway and spend over £10 in a single transaction you will receive a till slip coupon valid for seven days. The coupon may be exchanged for up to 40p off every litre you buy from the Safeway Petrol Filling Station.
(Half price petrol is based on saving 40p per litre when you spend £150 in-store.)

Their fuel offer is permanent but this weekend, up to the end of Monday, its doubled up, so instead of getting a 2p coupon for spending a tenner in the shop, you get a 4p coupon and so on.
I bought a cd and then saved £2.50 on Diesel for my Scenic!!
Not to be sniffed at!

Anyone who has been reading my post in Discussion will know that my aunt has just bought a 1995 Mk5 Escort 1.6 LX.

We're very pleased with it so far considering what she paid, but unfortunately we can't get the driver's seat height adjust to work, it's stuck in the highest position so my aunts legs are touching the steering coloumn, obviously we need to get this bit sorted ASAP.

The handle feels normal, not too loose, not too tight when lifting it, but the seat just won't budge. I've checked and there's no rubbish like a can of de-icer stuck under it. Has anyone any ideas? I know it's a difficult one to deal with via a forum but I was wondering if there was a common fault on the mechanism?

The car seems to have a low coolant level as well, but she has already arranged for a tame mechanic to give it the once over for any work that needs doing and there was no sign of mayo in engine when my Uncle inspected it, so hopefully that'll turn out to be something innocent. The car runs fine anyway, and I don't think headgaskets are prone to failure on the Zetec, fingers crossed, hopefully just a small leak from a pipe.

Also, the rear wiper doesn't work, I haven't had time to try and diagnose it yet, the only thing that I noticed was that when my aunt used the front windscreen wash, the wipers didn't move, she had to switch them on herself. Could this indicate that it is the control stalk that is at fault? Or are the relays kept somewhere else?

Any help or advice greatly appreciated as always...

Ive got a squeak on a Mercedes A140

Starts once the car is warm (15 mins driving plus)

Seems to originate from the front wheels.

Squeak stops when steering slightly to the left, start again when stering to the right.

Getting lounder over time!

Any suggestions what to look for? Read more

I then discovered that I could get the squeal by turning the wheel hub by hand and that slight movement of (not sure what the proper term is) the 'thin metal backing plate/shroud' that sits immediately behind the hub would stop the squeal. I suspect a build up of debris between the rear side of the disc and the backing shroud. >>

RM,

I wonder if this could simply be a trapped stone, rather than general debris? Seems a shame to disturb the hub unless really necessary -- perhaps a dig round with a bit of a wire coathanger would move whatever is there?
Citroënian {P}

Just been watching the new movie, and was a bit disappointed by the product placement of the cars - am I right in thinking the main car chase was an advert for Cadillac & Ducati? Bit of a dig destroying that BMW 7 Series, and surely it wasn't a co-incidence that they sent a Ford Explorer cartwheeling.

Bit like the Bond movie where the product placement was a bit OTT, IMHO.

Still, great movie.

LOL! No I'd have been thrown over into techical, although I should imagine that changing that particular matrix could well be a drama!

The car she was driving, is a new Cadillac - saw a review somewhere of the new version of it with som huge amount of BHPs and a note saying it's unlikely we'll get it here.

In case anyone's interested, I have noticed a large number of alternators for various makes put on eBay (free BIN listing day) yesterday.

They are all 'buy it now', i.e. fixed price, around £15-20 - can't provide any more info, don't need one, didn't look. Read more

Question Inlet Manifolds

Does anyone know what the symptoms of a leaking inlet manifold are? I've been told that I've got one by VW dealership. What would be the symptoms?

cheers.

I've just received my AA renewal - £84 for Roadside, Relay and complimentary Home Start ('cos I never call 'em out I guess). Anyway, I like the idea of being covered (as opposed to the car) but could I do better elsewhere ? Don't want to join a cheap cowboy outfit so has anyone got any suggestions and experiences to relate on this topic ? Thanks in anticipation all ! Read more

. They sent
a tow-truck driver who wouldn't tow me anywhere. He suggested I
book the car into a garage then get a tow-truck to
take it. He collected his £50 call out fee, which is
the GEM home start limit.

Did you break down at home?
If so, where did you want to be taken?
'Home start' is just that---assistance at your home address.
I don't think any company would tow you away from home.

SWMBO would like to go 4wd on the school run and the BMW compact is struggling with the 3 wheel baby buggy! joking apart it is needed to be a big estate and general family workhorse all in one.

Would like some opinions on the economics of buying a 99/00 sturbo for £10-11k or a newer £14-15k for an early tdi sport xtrail as plugged by HJ!

on the basis of the forester returning 25mpg and the tdi giving 35mpg over 48k miles, estimating the future value to be £3.5k for the subaru and £6k for the newer nissan, depreciation is about the same. total cost difference is about 5k about the same as the difference in purchase price. Are they figures broadly correct? Forester seem to hold their value incredibly well but will this carry on as they get older?, dealer prices seem to vary wildly, do they just pitch them high and expect big negotiations. Imports can be had for £17.5k and they still want £13k for a 3yr old 50k car.

Any opinions on the cars themselves? I figure the sturbo is faster better handling but less cargo space whereas the xtrail is newer therefore less problems, better looking (!) and more economical . Thanks, Ian Read more

"better looking"

distgruntledgolf

It appears to have been a running theme through some posts recently.

I have a 4 year old 51000 golf 1.6se and the gearbox has been rendered useless, due to a great big hole being put in the casing!!

It was an approved used VW and it has just gone past the extended warrentee period.

Not only that but a coleague has a 1.6 A3 of similar age that it has just happened to as well.

There has been talk of bearings going astray in the gearboxes on previous posts.

Does anyone know if VW have been sympathetic to these faults or have they taken the often harsh line of "out of warrentee not our problem".

Are VW customer services worth talking to? or is it straight down to trading standards?

This is not by a long way the only problem I have had with the car, but it is certainly the most expensive one to date.

any help appreciated

And a Scottish Airport taxidriver with a Sharan told me last month that his gearbox went at 120k (IIRC) and was replaced under warranty (unlimited mileage on his car)...
and the turbo on my Golf TDi110 has just been changed under
warranty at 31k, 18months, diagnosed as 'about to fail, we must change it', curing various intermittant misfiring and loss-of-power problems, absolutely no quibble whatsoever...

Are there more problems in getting spare parts these days? I've contributed to the thread on the Mercedes E-Class cooling hose problem (parts not available for weeks), also just read the HJ Car by Car; he says of the Nissan Primera II that 'spares shortages can put cars off road for three months'. My wife runs one of these and odd part we've needed has been available straight away, although we've never needed much.

Are people experiencing delays in getting parts more generally?

I'd guess it's a symptom of the bean counter mentality: why carry spare stock which you don't expect to sell on a regular basis?

It's capital tied up doing nothing.

Now things which are needed on a regular basis are a different matter, and can be counted, costed, and a profit made....
