Can anyone help? I have a four year focus that has started to rust by the back window where it comes to a v shape (above the Ford badge on the tailgate). I took it to my Ford Dealer and they said it was not perforation, even though you can see the rust through the glass. After looking on this site I know that focuses are known for this fault. Is there any one out there, that has had a similar problem and have been back to Ford?

My wife was driving her December 2000 Fiesta 1.8 TDI to work recently when she began to notice that she was losing power and the engine was making a racket! As the car has only done 34,000 miles and has been regularly serviced (not by Fords) she was amazed to be infomed by the dealership that the fuel pump had "gone" and would have to be replaced with other sundry parts and labour to a cost of nearly fifteen hundred pounds. The Service Department did admit that they were at a loss as to why this should happen and have promised to investigate. Has anybody else experienced problems with Ford diesel injector pumps? After my breakdown post, I appreciate that I am clearly in a glass house but - doesn't it make you wish you'd had the car serviced by Ford? Most new cars should need little OOW work in the first 3 years/60k and often the premium over a non franchised garage is quite small, particularly with Ford. I'm not saying that the independent servicing caused the problem but if it had been Ford serviced, it would be in warranty now :-(
I appreciate this sounds very smug but this site is about advice for all its readers, not just the original poster.
Does anyone know where I can obtain the settings for changing a cambelt on the Avensis please. Haynes do not do a manual for it. Read more
I am obliged. Unfortunately my computer will not handle fax for some reason.
Evening all, enlisting some help once again, hope you can oblige:
a strange noise has started when i drive my Passat TDI 1995 at more than 30mph, it continues whether i am in gear or not and gets worse as i increas speed. It seems to be coming from the wheels of at least from around the wheel areas, axle area particularly on the front passengers side. It is similar sounding to the engine, but slightly higher pitched and as i said increasing in resonance as i increase speed. Motorways are particularly noisey. The sound drops away when i drop speed to about - 30, and is inconsistent as sometimes it is there, somtimes not. I have recently changed all the brakes and the noise does not seem to be related to the brakes anyway.
would appreciate any ideas
cheers!

Martin, are you also Frogman in this thread? Unless I'm mistaken you seem to be replying to people on his behalf. Can you clarify?
Hi
I have purchased a used leather trimmed VW steering wheel with airbag from a VR6 to replace the plastic one on my VW TDi.
Both cars are 1997 , have airbags and they look indentical except for the leather trim.
Two allen screws underneath secure the VR6 airbag to the wheel.
I understand I should disconnect the battery to avoid inadvertant airbag deployment but am rather nervous about removing the TDi wheel.
When I last changed a steering wheel (20+ years ago) there was a large nut with a split pin.
Can some kind soul tell me what secures the wheel to the steering rack ?
Any other tips/hints ?
Thanks

Do not reconnect the battery until all the work is complete as you will trigger the Airbag fault light and the dealer will charge you to reset it. The wheel is held on with a single nut. do not use the steering lock (ignition to hole the wheel for you get a mate to hold it whilst you undo it. Regards Peter
Traded my Leon in last week at a local superstore. Very happy with the deal and car purchased (Avensis pre-reg 16 miles only-old model) but was told that the tax disc on my trade-in was part of the part-ex allowance and I had to hand over. there was 6 months left and I had assumed ( as in every other deal i have done) that this was mine to cash in. This is not abig deal for me but I have been wondering if this is usual practice. Read more
Yes, you're right in that I was prepared to pay the asking for it but it was still £800 over A1 book and a bad spec for a prestige motor (non metallic paint and a manual box) - but it was in outstanding condition
From the local press - FRIGHTENING statistics ... and probably all true.
South Africa's road death toll is more than double what the department of transport says it is.
The department reported that the road traffic death toll for 2000 was 7 635, but the MRC has calculated that the figure was closer to 18 000.
While transport department statistics report 7 635 road accident fatalities in 2000, the department of home affairs reports 17 045.
The MRC calculated 18 443.
"I shudder to think that the MRC information is correct," said Gary Ronald, an AA spokesperson. "It would put us as the number one [road death] country in the world."
"It seems too high. Then government is not succeeding in any of its programmes."
Gerrie Botha, the national standards and guidelines manager for the department of transport, said the government had never had figures as high as the MRC estimate, "and we've got figures all the way from 1930".

Whether you die or are just damaged is a thin dividing line sometimes. In South Africa, I imagine a lot of people use shanks pony. Hence, high death rates. No doubt there are other aspects. In the UK country lanes have become the preserve of commuters; woe betide non conformists on foot or cycle. Thats why there aren\'t many: too frightened by the 1.5 ton lemmings. So there isn\'t a problem here on road deaths (so some say) except that mums buy 2 ton trucks to preserve their offspring, clogging the roads and pavements, inciting others aspire to similar armament. Counter-rant ends.

That's an old Skoda joke, of course.
I think they did the millenial thing about 3 years ago, unsurprisingly. The site has been in my list of favourites for a long, long time and I read their column regularly.
IIRC (I'm not going back to check) they slated the Renault Dauphine and the LeCar (it pains me to say 'the' twice) which was an Americanized 5. On the other hand (see my post, coming soon to a forum near you) I have a bit of a downer on Renaults too.
Afternoon all.
A few weeks ago, the VED expired on my Land Rover SIII, which I park on the road outside my house. Upon digging out the documents, it transpires that I have forgotten about the MOT as well.
Took it to MOT station yesterday, it failed of course and will require some electrical work and some welding to the front of the chassis.
I would like to do this work myself, so therefore thought that the best option would be to submit a SORN, and keep the Landy in my drive for a while.
However, I have two other cars, and would prefer them in the drive and to keep the Landy on the road, as it acts as a "barrier" to any errant motorists, and if I had to choose between the three cars, that would be the one I would prefer to get damaged.
So, is there anyway I can keep a non-MOT'ed vehicle on the public highway legally?
Is there any way to get it taxed without an MOT? Read more
I would tend to support the trailer bit. Be very careful it could become a very technical. I honestly do not like taking the DVLA on these days (I have and won in the past) they have a very slick legal dept.

Does this occur immediately when you lock the car, or afterwards? If you trigger the alarm does the siren sound correctly then? Have you got the factory fit alarm, or the Vauxhall accessory fit DSA alarm?
Sorry for all the questions, just trying to pin down a few things before spouting suggestions to you!
Further to my posting last night, if it's a design flaw with the Chrome strip tailgate, then I would imagine that you have more cause for getting it fixed, the only Focuses that I have ever seen with rusty tailgates have the chrome strip...
Failing that, I would imagne that you could force them to accept that it is perforation if you keep at them long enough.
Good luck.
