Has anyone converted an automatic mini to manual? My son's K reg. automatic failed and we've been quoted around £700 to repair, the cheaper option would be to fit a manual engine/ gearbox unit out of a mini or possibly a metro, apart from the obvious need for a clutch pedal is anyone aware of any problems I could expect while carrying this out? I know you have to swap the subframes as they are different from auto to manual. It's a fairly big job unless you have a decent amount of workshop space to do it in. Best thing to do is look up a back issue of Mini magazine or Miniworld, I know they have both covered this job in the past.

Just something that occurred to me today -

Next to the M45 near Rugby there's a fairly tall (4 storeys?) circular brick building with a castellated top. Nearby there's what appears to be a small brick ledge on the ground with a chimney on top of it.
Next to the A41 towards Watford, just off M25 J19 by the Leavesden aerodrome sliproad, there's a HUGE chimney sticking out of the grass verge. And I'm sure there's another one somewhere, but it escapes me right now.
My question is, what are they and why are they there?
Any other weird structures you've come across?

And I know what the gibbets next to the M1 in Yorkshire are for. :-) Read more

Anyone had a problem with previous model Vectra seats squeaking VERY loudly whilst cornering ? Mine's a '01Y 2.2LS, and only the radio turned up loud is keeping me sane at the mo.

Has anyone with this problem self fixed, or had rectified by dealer ?

Thanks,

Yet a further example of the disgraceful build quality on these cars.

My original 01Y 2.2LS went back to the dealer 3 times to rectify this issue (twice drivers, one passenger) and I have simply given up with the replacement using your method of stereo volume to drown the damn things out.

A windy country lane has the ability to cause, in those with a more stressed disposition, a minor stroke with the amount of noise these things make.

It is possible to pull the trim from the rear of the seat using a screwdriver if you're careful (noted from watching dealer) and I have done this and used WD40 myself. Only turned out to be a short remedy.

Friend with an 01Y SRi (half leather) has had the squab replaced in both his front seats and the blasted things still squeak like there are several hundred mice in there having an orgy.

50% HP point hits in 12 exactly 12 months from now. Am counting the days...

All the best!

"The email address you wish to change to is already registered with Honest John.
Please use either use a different one or continue to login using your existing email address." - i.e. Compuserve, which has a disadvantage in that it does not cater for attachments, for me anyway.

The thing is, the one I want to change to is my other e-mail address, with Freeserve, which does not have this bother. So who is registered, and can I use that identity (I trust nobody else can so do)?

Thank you, e-mail sent.

And thanks to all.

Been looking at one of these as a potential new Office Battlebus.

this one is an M reg 1.6 lX. 130k up. Very tidy inside and out.
Has a service history of sorts.

I just need to confirm a couple of things. (yes, I have read HJ's C X C breakndown).

The geezer that's selling wants £975.00, but according to his SWMBO he will drop.

It seems from HJ's CXC breakdown that this has a chain drive
cam. Is that right ?

Will it have a cat. If it has what I propose to do is get him to put an MoT on it and I'll pay if it passes. I intend to offer about £850.00

Any comments on the above or anything else about the motor appreciated. Read more

I have taken a pre-facelift P reg 1.6 Primera 16v from 60k to 126k over 3 years. In that time it has had a new clutch, petrol pump and alternator. Otherwise it has been fine. The interior is dull and tacky but it runs and handles as well as anything else I have had in the repmobile class.

K for K is not that well understood and was half explained here.

Each insurer pays for the damage for it's own insured according to the liability of the policy. Whichever party is not at fault must persue the other driver for his/her uninsured losses (including excess), this will usually result in a claim on the other party's insurance. If the uninsured losses are met then the claimant will find his/her NCD reinstated.

As far as I know K for K is still alive and well in the industry as it saves the insurers millions of pounds a year.

Flat in Fifth

Well I'm back in the UK. Only been here for <6 hours and I have to say that have seen more examples of downright dangerous, inconsiderate and bad driving in that time than seen over the last few weeks in quite a few countries. That included two bikers who deliberately put themselves in clear & present danger for the sake of saving 0.5 seconds on their journey.

Funnily enough, and with apologies to John S and pugugly, most of the really bad overseas examples were in BMWs, but we've been there before.

So: This house proposes the motion that on average the worst drivers in Europe are: The British. (closely followed by the Italians, but for different reasons)

My Belgian friend says here in Belgium we drive fast and eat slow but in America they drive slow and eat fast. Belgians get my vote if you're only talking Europe.

Not exactly life threatening stuff but does anyone else hate the indicators on the new shape Vectra??? I had the misfortune of picking up a hire car from Heathrow last week to travel back home and after 10 miles of mis-indicating loathed the new Vectras one touch indicators. Anyone else think the same?? Read more

I had a Vectra 1.8 SRi hire car last week and was looking forward to seeing what all the fuss was about. I had absolutely no problem with them at all.

Overall, I liked the car.

This is the one with the Beemer lump I presume? I would suspect throttle positioner or throttle pedal sensor (fly-by-wire system)Does the Engine Management Light (EML) come on? If so then a fault code may be stored.
