In contrast to driving I read recently that there is no actual legal limit to a pilots intake of alchohol, in fact they are allowed to drink prior to take off.

Obviously if a pilot was found under the influence he would lose his licence and job, it just seems odd to me that they are allowed to drink and then pilot an aircraft with peoples lives under his responsibility.

Any pilots out there who know what the rules are. Read more

I now realize that my earlier post could have been slightly better worded, pity there's no edit facility.

I said there is a minimum time between drinking and coming on duty (typically 8, 10 or 12 hours). My next point was intended to be that there is an additional buffer to this period, of typically nearly another hour, between coming on duty and actually boarding the aircraft, therefore making my original figures nearer 9, 11 or 13 hours respectively. Contrary to popular opinion, pilots don't just turn up at the airport, jump in the aircraft and take-off. I also emphasized that there is an additional requirement to drink only in moderation even before that time, and 'in moderation' is pretty low, probably lower than most people would think.

If that is your area of confusion I hope it's now clear. If not, sorry I can't help further.

Has anybody else seen the new R/R on test drives down a27 between
chichester and arundel. Myself i think they look more like a tank, a landrover seems to have better lines on it, and also more attractive.
I think bmw are trying to put R/R down, so they can sell more 3,5,&7 series Read more

Interesting reasoning...

They must make £50k, probably more like £150k, on every extra Roller they sell. The big cost is developing a car that will sell in such small numbers - fewer units to spread the development cost over, so more cost per car on development reducing the overall profits.

At that money, they aren't in competition with a 3 Series, or even a 7, from a product planning point of view. While I agree with you that it looks like a half-finished tank I do think it is a serious effort to sell it and make money from a very select band of customers.

hi all , my father who has always been a "volvo man" and currently owns a v70t5 which has covered over 250k trouble miles, has been offered by a elderley relative a 1999 rover 827 with very low milage and in very good condition at a very good price but is a bit wary due to rovers past bad publicity, has any backroomers any opionins on whether this model is likely to be a good long term bet bearing in mind my father does about 50k a year any views much appreciated thanks Read more

How many times have you witnessed police drivers do something that we wuold have been booked for had we done the same thing.

what happened to me today was this-

I was waiting at a junction to join the dual carriageway to travel north.

While waiting for a gap in the traffic a police patroll car traveling south stopped in the gap in the central reservation to cross over and leave the dual carriageway (or so I thought).

When a gap appeared I made a move to join the carriageway.

What he did next was just plain stupid.

HE DID A U-TURN INTO MY PATH!!!!.

I was livid and he new it, in fact he deliberatly drove slowly forcing me to overtake him first then he put his foot down to overtake me, I call that intimidation.

I am losing respect for the police.

Comments please.

And that is probably a good place to leave this subject.
Mark.

I too thought Dwight's reply, being fairly unbiased was a good time to leave this issue.

Obviously Pugugly does not agree with you.

Neither do agree with him.

Mark, I would appreciate you placing a stop on this thread altogether.

Thankyou, and Regards,

Question Xsara Auto-Box
joshua

On a recent trip to Cornwall, whilst going down a steep hill the box made a strange noise (like a loud bang and a jolt )is this the box slipping ? due to the gradient of hill. This happened once before on Porlock Hill.

On the way back,I used the ice setting which deletes the use of first gear when going down a couple of steep hills. This appeared to work.

Any ideas? Read more

Ben79

Take it to the dealer as it is still in warranty, the box could have been overheating.

This may be a similar jerkiness problem that has affected C5 owners.

A friend of mine has a strange problem in his 18 month old Clio.

When he switches the aircon to cold everything works well. Even in Summer, and cold air is produced instantly.

When he switches to hot, the air takes ages to come out warm. He says the engine temperature will have moved from cold by the time this happens, so it's as if the hot aircon is just not working and the hot air is coming from the engine. He quotes 10 minutes to clear the windscreen.

Are there any aircon people in the backroom today?
Has anyone come across cold only aircon?
Does anybody have any clue whether the aircon is broken, or if something else is wrong?

I've read through the aircon FAQs, but I'm still clueless! Read more

Thanks Dave N. That's given him something to work on.

The car is still under warranty so if it's not an airlock I think it'll be back to the garage for about the 6th time!!

Question Hot 1.3 Fiesta.
Toad, of Toad Hall.

Bloke at Toad industries has a 1.3 Fiesta that's getting hot under the collar.

Symptoms: Temp goes *way* higher than usual high but turning the heater on helps.[1]

Fan stays off because the radiator is cool to the touch.

Plenty of water. It's got a bit of rust in it.

I think either there's a blockage or the thermostat is stuck closed.

My proposal is to whip the thermostat out and leave it out and flush the system as best I can.

Anybody got anything to add?

[1] He hasn't let it get into the red yet.

Car is fixed now by the owner!

It was the 'stat and we have a new fan of HJ's site to show for it.

Mate of mine's just bought an Audi A4 1.8 saloon with 75k on the clock on an N plate. Immaculate inside and almost outside. No squeaks, rattles or wobbles at all !

The price £1000 ! Is that a good deal or what ? Read more

DavidHM

That's well under half price, even for something much leggier. £2300 is as low as I can see one going for, even in brown or white, at auction.

On the other hand, 75k and worn vinyl around the gearstick? That's something I've seen on A4s, but never below 120k.

And yes, please let him have done an HPI check. He could have been lucky and found someone gullible who had no idea how to value their car, but equally the car could have been stolen or written off and bodged.

Forum VAG

Saw the bit on Watchdog about VAG motors blowing their coils. I obviously didn't catch which models (or is it all of them) that are affected.

I have a late Mk3 1.6 petrol. Am I OK or is something going to go bang? Read more

DavidHM

You should be fine.

The coil pack issue is with the 1.8, 20v turbo engine, I think for 2001 model year on but there is some confusion about this, at least in my mind.

Of course, your car is 5 years old now so anything *could* happen in theory, just not due to this design fault.

Chris TD

Car: 97 Astra 1.7 TD (LPT) Vauxhall engine
Symptom: The following glitch appears occasionally on startup, normally after standing overnight or all day. The engine starts and the Tacho rises up to about 500 rpm even though I know it's ticking over at 900-1000. The steering is sometimes very heavy (pump not being driven?) but not always. After a minute or so of tickover or manoevuring round the carpark and pulling away, when the revs should be up about 1500 to 2000 the fan belt starts to squeal intermittantly for 10-40 seconds and suddenly stops. At the same time the squealling stops, the tacho jumps to the correct reading, and normal service is resumed.

I've tried starting it up with the bonnet open and a torch to check if the pulleys/alternator/steering pump are rotating, but so far Murphy's law has dictated that when I have time to do this (not running late into work). the problem doesn't appear!

The belts seem tight enough, but I might tweak them up a bit. What puzzles me is the tacho reading - anybody any info on where it's picked up from? could it be caused by a voltage drop (with alternator not turning)?

Any info appreciated.

Thanks
