Question MAF sensors
Keith S

Reading on another website, it seems that a dirty MAF (mass air flow) sensor can cause all manners of probs. As my Mondeo pinks a little I had a look at mine. It is quite dirty, so I'm gonna clean it with some carb cleaner and see if it makes a difference.

Anyone else heard of this problem? Read more

I take it your car is a Petrol model? Never had any problems with petrol MAFS.

Diesel MAFS tend to get dirty probably due to the huge amount of air going into the engine....

Road Salt appears to be a contributory factor too.

DO NOT USE any form of un-approved solvents......I believe SAAB approve one.

Distilled water!

Diesel MAF Sensors are now available on an exchange basis from your local Bosch Service Centre

Primera_p

Hi,

I own a 1995 1.6 Primera with what I think is a blown head gasket.

Can anyone suggest how much I should pay for a replacement?

I've spoken to my local Nissan dealer and they confirm that it is the H G from my explanation of the problem.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Cheers for your post Steve.

I went to the original Nissan specialist garage and he said that he had never had a Primera with a failed head gasket.

He suggested that I use it for a few weeks and keep an eye on coolant levels, I checked it this am and the rad level was only slightly down.

I will add some of that rad weld stuff and see how it goes.

If you are interested (and sitting down) The garage advised that a HG replacement on this car would be c.£500. However, he suggested that if it had gone then the symptoms would be a lot more obvious and it would be running poorly. (which it isn't) I will do as he suggests and watch it closely for the next few weeks. I think these engines are as good as everyone says, I had the coolant replaced by another garage and I think they might have used insufficient coolant ratio. I am now fully competent at the coolant replacement now so I will be doing it myself in future!!

P.S. I suggested that running it without the cap to look for bubbles and was advised against it since it tends to blow coolant all over the place!

I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. I paid the deposit for an Audi S2 on Saturday and I've got to wait until this Saturday before I can collect it! It's driving me nuts!
At least, when I do collect it I've got 40 miles of motorway followed by 20 miles of A roads to bring it home on.

Then you can "love it and hug it and call it
your own"

Shouldn't that be "Hug it and pet it and call it George"?

Not sure I would want the Yeti to pick up my beloved and treat it like it treated Marvin the Martian, but each to there own.

Wonder if that would be covered under warranty?

We've just bought a house that needs some renovation, and could do with a good, reliable vehicle for carting stuff about. I originally planned to get an old transit, but my car insurance company won't transfer the policy onto a commercial vehicle. I don't want to cancel the policy (and lose about 8 months NCB) so i thought about getting a big estate car instead.

So, does anybody have any recommendations? It needs to be very, very cheap (£300-£400 max!), be reliable and have plenty of load space. Image isn't important, and neither is fuel economy, since i won't be doing that much mileage - having said that, i'd prefer a deisel, but know nothing about buying a cheap deisel, so would be wary. My first thoughts have been an old Volvo estate (740, 940, 960, they all look the same to me?), Sierra estate, Pug 405 estate - any other ideas? I suppose a Jap car would be best (against all my principles, but that's being done to death on another thread!) but i can't think of many jap cars around that sort of price?

Not the most interesting thread i know, but any help will be greatly appreciated!! Read more

Well, after narrowing the search down i've bought a B reg Audi 100 Avant estate, 106k miles, 5 months MOT and tax, towbar and roof bars, for £200. A lovely comfortable car, and it's already shifted a good few tons of crap! Looks solid enough to last a good few years, but if it only lasts till the MOT's up it'll have paid for itself.

Many thanks to all who gave their advice, and if anyone's thinking about buying very cheap cars, the bangernomics site is excellent!

I am sorry for my english. I am new at this forum.
My service station has replaced software in the engine computer. The new version is 23e. The problem is that the engine temperature pointer grows very slow. When I turn the internal heating on, the pointer falls down. When I stop the car (engine is turned on) the pointer falls down even to the lowest level. Everything was OK before software replacing. My mechanics are helpless. They have repeated computer programing, replaced the thermostat, but the problem is unsolved. The problem seems to be caused by the new software because the engine seems to be warm and internal heating works OK. Did someone have a similar problem? And how to solve it?

Who knows anything about Fiat Punto engine management? It's a 1.1 litre petrol, 8V on an N plate. It is currently overfuelling on tickover and is difficult to start when warm/hot due to excess fuel. The fuel injection warning light is on. Have looked at coolant temp sensor, inlet air temp sensor and throttle pot. All OK. Lamda sensor is working fine (although not sure this does much at tickover). MAP sensor appears to be OK but not exactly sure how to test.

Did wonder if fuel reg pressure is too high but I can't see how the ECU would know about this, hence how would it know to put fuel injection warning light on?

I'm beginning to suspect the ECU but that's a bit drastic!

Any help would be very welcome.

I am thinking of buying a Hyundai 2.4 Santa Fe, I've looked at various options but, apart from the excellent Mazda Tribute, I haven't found a real alternative for less than £17,000. Have I missed something ? What is the best SUV/4 by 4 for that sort of prices according to you, trouble is I've read some conflicting opinions on the santa fe, none on the Mazda Tribute (though misteriously unknown car in the UK as it seems, why ?)
what 's yr opinion ? Thanks to all Read more

Surprised that you can't get fixed up for £17,000. There's so much at that price. By way of alternatives the new Kia Sorento starts at similar money and is featured on this site today. You'll get the perennial favourite 4x4's by Nissan, Toyota and Honda around that price if you seek a discount. Do you want diesel? Presumably not as the Tribute is petrol only. Perhaps you'll get a more comprehensive response if you list your requirements and reasons for purchase on the discussion site, ie. off road/towing/economy/typical usage requirement - on what you've given in your post it's difficult to know what you want.

Question Omega 1995 MV6
Omega MV6

Hi Everyone,

I own an Omega 1995 MV6 in the 3 ltr engine. The two problems I am having at the moment are:-

1) No reading on the rev counter

2) No reading on the fuel guage

Both always stay at 0 even though my temp guage works along with my speedo.

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

You could try reseating the clocks as they are not joined by any cables, the clocks just rest against contacts so maybe some of those are not touching. check this link for the step-by-step for removing and refitting the clocks
