hi
i have just bought the above vehicle and im a little concerened at the amount of grey/black smoke that comes from the exhaust on normal and hard acceleration. i have had the injector pump set up properly by a specialist and had an oil and filter change but it still seems to persist. The specialist suggested that i ran some injector cleaner through the fuel tank to clean possible deposits from the engine components but this hasnt worked either.

i have read on various forums that the injectors could possibly be worn and may need replacing and to also renew the fuel filter as this can sometimes cause the prob.
A little help on the matter would be very much appreciated!!!! Read more

hi richard

thanks very much for your help. i havent put a new air in as the current one does not seem very old at all. i thought it might be down to the injectors so i will have them looked at. once again thanks for your help

Please can someone help me? I bought a Ford Probe 2.5L V6 but the alarm system does not seem to work. I have two key fobs for the car none of them work. I think one's for the remote central locking and one's from the immobiliser but they do not seem to work are there any diagnostics i can do before i take it to an alarm specialist.

Thanks Read more

After carrying out a 95K service (last august) the engine seemed to be 'missing' Franchised dealer carried out some repairs Foc but would only say that they replaced a top end of a tappit.

They have just returned it and on trying to run the revs up a bit it starts banging and belching smoke at 400rpm. Mr Merc says that it cant be reved whilst stationary as the management system cuts out as it dousn't sense any speed.

As you can tell I am not mech. minded, so are they telling me porkies? Can anyone help please? Read more

Yes I think they are. I have never heard of this. Even if there was such a control device it would not cause the engine to bang and belch smoke! You need to find out more.

Is anyone selling a non-turbo diesel?

We fancy a Picasso but the PSA HDi is a turbo and people are experiencing problems with them already.

Don't understand why anyone buys a petrol car. Read more

I wouldn't say we are having problems with the Picasso, it is a niggle that should be fixed by wednesday. I borrowed dads Picasso for the day, and found my commute far better, the car would run uphill in 3rd, no throttle at 16mph keeping up with the traffic, and the hydraulic clutch was a delight.

It has been reported that around 40K problems occur with the wiper spindles which allow the wiper arm to move forward and impinge upon the bonnet. This has occurred to mine at 35K. How difficult is this repair? Does the dash have to come out? Read more

Thanks for the advice and warning! When it stops raining, I'll have another go. I'm sure I've seen a wiper arm removal tool advertised somewhere. I guess it's what the winscreen replacement guys must carry.

Having a slight problem with my 106 - the remote plip doesn't seem to work any more at all. I'm pretty sure the battery hasn't gone, as the little red light on the key illuminates when the button is pressed, but it doesn't actually do anything, at any range to the car. Could it be that the battery has gone, or is it possible that it's a problem with the receiver unit in the car? Any help appreciated :)

How come they can't get the simplest of things right ?

Tuesday am - call at VW dealers near homefor a pair of radio extraction keys. parts department say VW wont allow them to sell them 'for security reasons'
Tuesday lunch - ring Vw dealers near work who say we haven't got any, but they'll order some in for tomorrow morning.'Do I have to come down and order them or can I give you my credit card number' I ask - 'Oh, don't bother. people are always asking for them, we need some for stock' was the reply
Weds Lunch, VW dealers near work - 'I've come for some radio keys' - 'did you order them' - 'no' - 'They're not here yet - maybe tomorrow or friday'
Thurs lunch, VW dealers near work - 'Are those radio keys in yet?' - 'did you order them' - 'no, you said you'd be getting some for stock' - 'they shouldn't have said that - would you like to order some' - 'Yes - can you recommend a good VW dealer ?'

To think we trust them to keep our cars safe

Many, many moons ago I had a BMW which broke down and was taken to a dealer for warranty repair.

During the day they contacted me for the radio code.

When I got there I was paying off the taxi when I saw one of their people drive my car into a low wall! They swore blind that the bumper damage was there all the time. Luckily I had the taxi driver as a witness.

The radio never worked again. It had been removed and the wired up incorrectly when replaced. never did find out why they took it out in the first place.

The car broke down with the same fault on the way home.

Six months later they were still chasing me for the VAT on the warranty repair on the grounds that I worked for a VAT registered company and they could reclaim it!!!

HJ - so my 71 year old grandmother decided that she defiantely wants a new(er) car after the exhaust dropped off her Corolla.

No problem I thought, so we went out to look at the New Micra and some nearly new Yaris's, based on your recommendation that this is one of the best small, sensible cars for a retired lady...

We ended up buying a 51 reg Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec with alloys, full climate pack, optional CD player and steering mounted remote. :)

Does anyone else have these sort of experiences? Like when my mam goes to the supermarket for milk and bread and comes back with enough stuff to feed a small country...

The car's a scream to drive though, very quick, really nice seats that grip you securely, and when I realised that I'd over done it on the approach to a roundabout during the test drive, I pressed the brakes and the car practically stood on it's front end! Fantastic stopping power :) Now I just need to get on her insurance....

Recently the brakes in my car have been grinding when I first apply the footbrake after pulling away. I drive the car around 120miles every day and this has only been happening for the past month or so. The grinding dies down after a few braking events, but there is a definite rumble thereafter when I apply the brakes.

I purchased the car back in June 2001 and had it serviced with Ford, they replaced the brake fluid. I have done 20k miles since then (also with original tyres, even wear - I'm not a heavy braker) so was wondering what potential causes/problems could be... or is it due to just wearing pads?

Another curious note, I have noticed that if I am at traffic lights and I lift my foot off the brake pedal and then apply the handbrake, the pedal sinks slighty - I havent noticed this before, is this normal?

Thanks in advance

Could be:
1. worn or rusty discs. Do you have alloy wheels, wash car and then leave it? Sure as eggs are eggs, discs will corrode and eventually you will get a rust build up/ ridges if you do not use the car a lot.
2. Could be worn pads - see above
3. As suggested could be worn rear brake linings.. judging the mileage this is most unlikely unless your handbrake cable is left partially on/rusted on.. which is possible .. see 1> above.

I'd try 1 first - easy visual inspection.. and easist to do.
Then jack up rear wheels and try rotating wheels with handbrake off ( wheels chocked etc for safety...)

Where can I get reliable/realistic fuel consumption figures? I read an article in the press a couple of months ago that toose provided by manufacturers are a bit optimistic. Read more

What Car? mag has a comprehensive table for all currently available cars, which gives the manfr's data, and used to show their own figures for the models they have tested - over what they called their Touring Route. [ They seem to have abandoned this column since 2000 ]
