As this motor has my vote for the ugliest vehicle for quite some time (even allowing for Multipla) howsabout making the cash back
£12003 and net price £3k. Might consider buying one then plus disguise for self whilst driving same.

2.0 petrol SEs can be bought for £11495. Are they not up to previous VW standards? Do they have known problems?
Seems a good buy to me - but VW aren't normally known for their generosity!

Well I have just checked up on these prices. They are not new after all, but 6 - 12 months old! A clever bit of marketing, or maybe not? There was a 52 reg 2.0 SE emblazoned on the side with 'Buy these cars for £11495' parked on the end of a row of brand new, unregistered identical models!
Ah well............ a good thing no-one got too excited about wanting one :-)

The Panda that HJ recommend to us as cheap motoring has finally gone to hopefully another good home. H reg 1000 super that cost us £350 about 2 years ago went today for £275, in that time I put a water pump on it, changed the plugs, distributor and rotor arm etc and it had an oil change, one due now. What can I say? About £75 per year not including petrol insurance etc. If anyone can beat that and then sell it to a happy buyer please let us know.
The replacement car is a B reg Polo Coupe S (27000 miles) that used to belong to my MIL, she gave it to us as she now has a new Polo 1.4. Just given it a good wash to get several years of muck off it and it looks about 5 years old, odd dent etc but nothing that cant be put right. It's in for the full service at our local independent back street garage (Marsh Garage of Marsh, Huddersfield. I can't recommend Steve enough. For those who want to know). Change of all fluids following full flushing etc, new plugs and leads, other ignition parts etc and then we will see how that goes. Should I go for a semi synth oil at the service? Its still on its original tyres so those have got to go. I am thinking of Michelin Energy tyres, I can get them at Costco, fitted for about £38.00 each (165*65*13), how does that sound? Anyone think of anything I have missed for the service? The car itself goes like stink for a 1300, the Italian tune up on the A1M coming down from Newcastle saw it off the clock with ease.

Change Cam belt and be prepared to remove the water pump and replace the big 'O' ring as they use the pump sproket to tension the belt and at that age the 'O'ring will probably not reseal but try it. run some carb cleaner through it and some redex cleaner for a couple of tanks and she's away. Check the rubber carb mounting has not perised split but other than that she'll be fine
Regards Peter 2 Polo's and about to go for number three for my son.
Found this on another website, it's a listing for the insurance views on postcodes in the UK. Makes interesting reading, and although I'm sure it's not a definitive list, the postcodes I know seem well reflected.

I'm not so far away myself - so I have an idea what I mean!
Is there a problem getting VW parts?
My daughter has waited 9 months for a drivers door lock on their Sharan. This was a result of a bodged break-in.
Main dealer keeps saying "order still active, no news yet".
Must remember not to buy VW for me. Read more
Thank you all for your responses/suggestions, will try all tomorrow.
I went to my local Miller agent to ask about the new VW specification oil XFE-PD.
They did not have it in stock and thought that it was not actually available as yet.
Anyone actually bought this stuff and how much did it cost?

Millers have a web site, www.millersoils.co.uk.
I have spoke to them in the past about racing oils and they have been very helpful. If you access their site, you can leave a question for the technical dept, and they get back to you.You can also buy oil direct, although you have to buy certain quantities to make it worth while buying it fron them any cheaper, unless a group of you get together.
My Astra has developed a coolant leak within the last 2/3 days, seems to be coming from the below the water pump area, dripping in 3 places. How difficult is it to repair/replace the pump , any idea of cost ?. Are there any known problems ? the vehicle has done 169k.-rickt p.s. just joined the forum. Like the style and layout. Read more
Mrs Etchells has finally decided that an MX5 is the car for her and currently they do a vary tasty special with a hard top. The Montana has other extras such as leather and air-con and is priced just a shade under £3k over the price of a standard 1.8 model, at £18995.
I have had a sniff around the dealer and naturally they claim that Mazda will not discount. But ! Lo,in this weeks local rag the very same dealer is offering it at £17995 with a £500 deposit allowance from Mazda. Shades of trying to shift them a bit quicker?
The trouble is, as it is a special it is unlikely any will turn up at the supermarkets. Autobytel have them at £17800 and I have requested a price from brokerforcars, disappointingly without a response within the promised 48 hours, not even 7 days.
I suppose it always comes down to how much one wants a particular model when deciding a price that is acceptable. Shopping hard enough will get a new standard 1.8 for £13 - 14k but not with the top and the air, which add another £3k. Any ideas? Read more

A relative of mine currently has an old-shape Mazda 323 5 door (loathes the current shape) and will shortly be looking for a new (or low mileage 12-18 months old vehicle). His criteria (as described to me) are:
- "A bit different/stylish" (he doesn't need space)
- "Not a convertible"
- "Not a Citroen/Peugeot/Renault/Fiat/Alfa/Ford/Vauxhall" (!)
- "Not a VW Golf"
- "Reliable"
He has between 10K and 12K to spend - any ideas? He's thinking of a used (yr 2000 on model) Toyota Celica although he doubts he'll be able to find one at this price/age/low mileage. I've suggested a Mazda 6. What do 'the panel' recommend?

The drivetrain is very jerky and it is very difficult to drive smoothly in traffic. Purchased at 88k, its now done 143k and its no worse or better. Makes no difference whether engine or weather is hot or cold.
When you are in gear and accelerate the drive jerks and chunks noticeably (noise and feel). Similarly when taking your foot off causes it. It doesnt jerk when varying an open throttle, only when closing fully or opening from closed. It also happens when changing gear up or down. It happens in all gears even fifth & reverse but is most obvious in 1st/2nd because of greater torque. Not sure if it is a mechincal or ECU problem? It requires an extremely light foot, sometimes it will do it when I havent knowingly moved my foot.
I can get round the problem by dipping the clutch and bring the revs up when wanting to speed up in slow moving traffic and by keeping the throttle open (slightly!) whilst changing gear, not ideal I know, the clutch is now starting to judder!
Ive lived with this so long I dont want to spend any money on it but if any of you know a simple cure I would be grateful as it is so annoying arrrgggghhh!!

Thanks for the ideas guys, I looked at the engine whilst it was revved today and its hardly moves at all, just very slightly but no more than a couple of mm. The engine of my previous car (a Clio) rocked a lot and the engine mounts squeaked but that never had a jerky throttle response.
Today the Cavalier drove much smoother and didnt once jerk noticably in 32 miles. Perhaps because I washed it on Sunday, or it knows Im getting tempted to trade it in for an HDI 306!
Ill have another look at the rocking when it next gets bad.
Thanks for your help.
Mike.
Yeah, should have stopped car developement/styling with the MK V Cortina, luvverly motor.
