Anybody any idea what would cause this problem Read more

Only happens when hot??

It'll be a sticking throttle body, easily cured by replacing the oringinal plastic body with a new alloy body.

Common problem.

Having recently been fined (and not for the 1st time) for contravening a bus lane, I no longer look to drive in them.

BUT....

some bus lanes here in London are 24 hour ones, but there are no 24 hour bus services to drive in them.

Isn't this a little bit strange? Read more

They've got a few of those phantom junctions in watford, at rush 'hour+' all the traffic gets snarled up the buses don't use them as a lot of the time as they're stuck in the congestion caused by the traffic lights.

I've just watched the latest "new" Top Gear - a massive improvement on the old one. I Even caught SWMBO watching it over the top of her Sunday paper.

...but - who is Stig?

I'm sorry if this has been covered before, but I am wondering if it will turn out to be someone well known.

Any ideas?

Chris - nearly an ex-pat...

As mentioned above in many posts, it has been confirmed that Perry Mcarthy is/was the Stig.

I have a 1987 Daihatsu Charade. It is the older shape than the one we got in the UK but it has the same 1 litre engine. The engine has a small leak coming from - what the main dealer (no option in the location I was in) - told me was the oil pump. It drips a drop or so a night. When travelling recently, it burnt alot of oil (2.5litres) going over some mountain roads for 2000-3000km but the after accidentally filling it over full with oil it stopped doing so - the really steep mountains also stopped then. The fuel comsumption also varies dramatically - never really living upto what I expected. I realise that labour rates will differ here but what do the experts think is wrong here and what time should it take to rectify. However - it never really feels like it is going to stop on me and otherwise is very reliable. I realise it was dirt cheap to buy (600 quid with tax, MOT and insurance for a 21 year old for a year and an AA inspection which pointed out the minor oil leak). I will be looking at selling it in 6 months so to help with that it would be good to sort out the leak. An exterior polish with T-Cut will have already helped alot in that context. It will be going in soon to sort out sweaky brakes so any help would be great. Thanks guys.

Thanks CMark and crazed for your help. I went along to Repco (the NZ Halfords) and changed the air filter and have got a quote of about 70 quid for the belt change - that was the cheapest quote and it was from the main Daihatsu dealer - I was shocked. Anyway, that and the brakes are being sorted Friday which coupled to my full AA cover (a snip at just over 20 quid) means that I have bought myself piece of mind. I thought that I was was being over cautious, but some other people in a similar situation who weren't so fussy have had major things gone wrong with their Starlets and Toyota Crown Grande Mark II (not sure if that is the right name) and have scrapped them and bought other cars - mind you they didn't spend more than 400 quid on them. Having read this site so much I didn't want to buy a wreck, (to save the other half just laughing at me) and touch wood I am happy about this car. Again thanks for the help.

Question Min Tread Depth
peteH

Whilst the legal min is 1.6mm, I imagine that it would be prudent to change the tyres before this depth. At what tread level would people here change there tyres?

Yeh 1.6 is the legal depth but it you drive a car that is at all powerful, or drive above 50mph regularly, or indeed drive "enthusiastically" then change at 3mm, after this depth their quality and grip can deteriorate very quickly and badly. I have heard terrible tales of tyre faults causing problems when it gets close to the inner parts. I also suggest spending money on getting a good quality tyre, as long as you choose the right type you can get better performance and distance than a cheap tyre, and never forget an extra £10 a tyre could save your life one day

I want to prevent what's in the back of the car (e.g. garden rubbish) from joining me in the front.

My old Vectra estate had a vertical load net supplied as standard, my Focus estate doesn't, and there don't seem to be anywhere in the car for such a net to clip on.

The local Ford dealer looked and found some sort of "kit" for about £25. It was difficult to tell from the diagram on the screen exactly how this is supposed to be fitted. Has anyone bought one if these? If so are they any good?

What confused me more is the Ford accessories web page lists something similar for over £90!

Alternatively has anyone used one of the tubular metal things from Argos or Index? They are meant for keeping dog(s) in the back of the car but I guess they should work OK with a few sacks of leaves and the like.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Charles,

The £23 version is probably what the dealer found in the accessories listing. Given that there is a (much) more expensive version I wonder if the £23 one is adequate. Problem is that unless you know someone who has one then you have to take a leap of faith and order one, then hope that it does the job.

Mines a Feb 2002 51 reg but I expect it was built in 2001 - it hasn't got the extra protection strips on the bumper which, AFAIK, signifies a 2002 year model.

I'll check out my local Halfords.

I have recently e-mailed Surrey Police about vehicles on the road without insurance, tax or M.O.T.The end result of the contact is that as far as they are concerned the problem 'is not a police matter'.
As one of the reasons given for my motoring costs being so high is to cover the monies lost as a result of the large numbers of illegal drivers on our roads, I find this answer unacceptable.
How are we to rid ourselves of these parasitic motorists?

How do l get from the garage to the MOT station without a tax disk?
Well l know l'm going to drive it regardless but what's my legal position? Read more
