Is there anyone out there with hands on experience, who could offer impartial, off-the-record, advice on a problem with the aircon on the above, which appears to be "working too well"
Thank you, petel@clara.co.uk Read more

Pete, I'll respond by email, but also post here for the benefit of others.

All a/c systems need a method of maintaining evaporator temperature just above freezing point. On Vauxhalls, they use a variable displacement compressor with a valve in the back of it. This valve measures the refrigerant pressure entering the compressor suction port, and uses this pressure to determine the temp of the evap. If evap temp rises due to high demand, the valve sees a higher pressure, as temp and pressure are directly related, and increases the displacement of the compressor, thereby increasing the cooling capacity of the evap. As demand dereases, the valve in the compressor will see a drop in pressure as the evap temp drops, and will reduce the displacement of the compressor accordingly. Therefore, if evap temp is too low, ie. below zero degC, then the valve isn't doing it's job and reducing the diplacement of the pump. This is easy to diagnose by measuring the low side pressure of the system, and it should read 1.9Bar with the compressor running. If it's lower than this, and I suspect it will be, then the compressor needs replacing. The valve itself can be replaced, but I think on the V6 the compressor needs removing to get at it, and it will be just as easy to swop the whole lot, rather than just the valve, then find out the part the valve slide in is worn or doesn't seal properly.

Many more cars are now coming out with this type of compressor, as you don't have to suffer the constant cycling of the compressor that can upset cars with little engines. It's also the reason why you can leave it on all year round, as it sorts itself out regards cooling, and doesn't affect fuel consumption any.

Is it me or has certain people's driving got even worse since we put the clocks back?

Driving early this evening, maybe 6.30-ish, I hit heavy traffic on a duel-lane road, normally fast-flowing road. Rush-hour, I know, my fault for chancing it at this time. Traffic was flowing at maybe walking pace or a little more, but it was choc-a-bloc in both lanes.

At one point in this road, it becomes single-lane for a while, between 2 sets of traffic lights. So, as the single lane part was approaching, cars were filtering in to he left lane, as is the norm. I was in the LH lane, and pulled back a little so the guy next to me in the RH lane could pull in in front of me. Then I carried on moving, and became aware of a car behind me in the RH lane coming up as fast as was posible in the circumstances and trying to force me further over to the let (which was impossible for me to do without mounting the pavement). I carried on forward, determined that I was not going to be forced off the road by some aggressive teenage driver (male or female) but the car persisted. Glancing to the right, I saw the car, literally no more than an inch from mine, come forward again and then make to swerve around the front of my car. I hooted, twice, to warn them of what they were doing, but they took no notice. I had no choice but to stop sharp, risking a bump in the back, to avoid that car hitting the front of mine. As it went past and in front of me, I looked over expecting to see a boy-racer type or young female in daddy's car. It was, in fact, an elderly couple, at least into their seventies, I would say, both studiously glaring ahead and refusing to even apologise/indicate that they had done something wrong.

At the next set of lights they swerved back into the RH lane as they wished to turn right, they were lucky the car behind them braked as I had done.

I know this stuff happens all the time - but in the last week I seem to have had to do so much evasive action, much more than usual, and wondered if any others of you have experienced the same?

Is it the night falling in quicker that is causing more dangerous action? Or did I just get lucky with Mr and Mrs 'We're pensioners so we can do what we like'? (no reflection on most pensioners at all, for whom I have the greatest respect, but you know the type I mean).

PLS - no, my eyesight is very good, my night vision I would say is as good as anyone else's! If people are on full beam, main beam, whatever it's called, I get blinded, that's all.

any one tell me what type of signs have to be displayed for parking.when in london you get a big sign on the road controlled zone
i am from kent we have a sign about 1/2 a mile from where i got a ticket but not on the road i was in Read more

Not clear from thew original post whether the incident took place in London or Kent. Volvoman has posted a link on another thread for the National Parking Adjudication Service (www.parking-appeals.gov.uk/) They deal with appeals out of London for those areas where parking offences have been "decriminalised". You will get a Penalty charge Notice issued by an attendant rather than a fixed penalty issued by the police or wardens. Usually applies to all roads except motorways and trunk roads where enforcement remains with the police. Quite a lot of usefull background on their site as well.

All London Boroughs have decriminalised enforcement. Think the police/wardens still look after the red routes though. There is a separate appeals service for London their url is www.parkingandtrafficappeals.gov.uk/

The ticket should give details of the offence type, issuing authority and appeal route.

In both cases you have to go through a process of making, and having rejected, representations to the issuing council before you can appeal to the tribunal.

As you may remember my son is considering buying a Peugeot 406 coupe,we are going to see a car tomorrow, after doing an AA check we have found that it has outstanding finance on the car. When I am a buyer, I expect the seller to present the car in a saleable condition. If it has outstanding finace, imo that is the same as rusty/unwashed /clappedout/etc.

Why buy trouble the vendor can't be bothered to sort out? Life is complicated enuf...

Any mini cooper s/ cooper/one owners out there. 4 weeks old cooper s 1000 miles a very intermitant fault has developed (happened 6 times), when using remote to open car, sunroof tilts and windows drop about one quarter of an inch, can only be rectified manually, have spoken to service department, and it's a new fault for them. Booked in at Snows Portsmouth next week. Anybody with same/similar problem??.

Funny my Beemer did this last week. Used the spare key for the first time for a few months. I unlocked the car, the seat adjusted, the back windows opened and the Climate cranked up from 17' to 24' and the radio channel changed itself.. I thought it had dumped its "personal" settings and intended to book the car in. Hasn't repeated the "fault" I put it down to lack of use on the key. Mini's never done that though.

Question Sump plug valve

Anyone out there know where you can get those valves that replace the sump plug to make oil change easier?

I know aeroquip make them for small plane engines, but can't find any for cars. Read more

Dave,

I do recall something about this discussed on the old site. Check the archives.

Alternativly, I do recall a discussion on peugeot-L@yahoogroups.com. Again, use archives.

Then you could always use old carpet to catch the drips and spills. And an oversize drain tray such as the bottom of a deceased Hamster's cage. It works for me.

Question Passat 20VT
sorrera

Having seen a number of these cars going through the auctions at pretty decent prices. I am considering putting one on my shopping list. probably a 1999 (and certainly not the newer version)
The reports I have read seem to really rate them. My one 2st hand experience as a passenger was very favourable.
Does anyone have any experiences of them?
I currently have a TT so I know all about the engine, which is a cracker once you get used to the lag.
There seems to be SE, Sport and S versions, anyone know the differences? and which would you recommend.

How many miles do you think the 20VT will remain tight for? I am guessing 140-150K?

I know the Mody is cheaper but I feel the Passat will be easier to sell on.

Many thanks Read more
