Question Welding
richard1985

I have a 1973 austin minivan which i am restoring. I need a good mig welder to the body panels on the car but anything i have tried so far has either been too powerful or not powerful enough with the settings. I do not wish to spend enourmous amounts of money. Could anyone give any advice on a suitable welder. it would be much appreciated.

The automatic helmet does sound a good buy at that price as they do make the initial part of welding much easier. Not so sure on the welder as I’ve heard they’re nothing like as good as a gas mig.

Was actually 23 quid (actually actually the 22.99 jive) but still remarkably cheap.

I've only used oxy-acetylene on a car, though I did an evening course using gas mig on thicker steel and aluminium, which seemed to work quite well....

Having just changed all four tyres on my Renault Laguna yesterday,I was surprised to find that the tyres on the back were the original ones fitted from new. They were Pirelli P4000's and they had done 60195 miles and they were still not quite down to the wear bars.

Makes quite a change from the tyres on my Fazer 600.I usually get 4000 from a rear and they cost over £100 each and I have to remove the wheel.

Four Continental fitted,new valves,balanced,and rim sealed £220.

In comparison,quite a bargain ! Read more

Marcus,

You are probably right about the profit margin on bike tyres being greater than on car tyres. If you sell a thousand tyres, you can make a tenner profit on each and end up with a tidy sum. If you only sell fifty, your profit margin needs to be higher to make a worthwhile surplus.

Hi

Can anyone give me advice about my remote locking please?

I have a 1998 Ford Modeo Diesel that has remote locking using a push-button key..This suddenly packed in and I naturally thought that it was the batteries that wanted changing in the key..( as happened a couple of years ago ) ...which I have now done.Unfortunately it still doesn`t work.

How can I prove whether it is the key or the car that is faulty?

Does anything need "reprogramming to make it work again?

Can anyone explain in layman`s terms how this remote system works?

If it is the key that is faulty , how do I obtain a new one...presumably from the local Ford dealer....and what sort of price is it?

note: The only other key that I posess for this car is "Red" in colour and I was told that this is essential in order to obtain a replacement key.

Cheers

I forgot to let everyone know what the very CHEAP cure was to my "remote locking problem.

After spending hours surfing the internet looking for advice, trying at least 6 different ways of programming the key etc, I decided to try the "reboot" method that seems to cure most computer faults ( ie switch off then on again !!)

Disconnecting the car battery for 10 minutes CURED the problem !!

( The only extra needed was the security code to reprogramme the radio )

Worth remembering , especially as the local Ford dealer wanted £60 plus VAT MINIMUM to sort it out , saying that it would probably need "re-programming " as this was a common cause

Dude - {P}

Perhaps some of you petrol heads could tell me why there are no serious developments with 2 strokes. I know the barrier in the past was possibly horrendous exhaust emissions, but I would have thought that with modern fuel injection systems & computerised engine management, these problems could be resolved!! I believe I read that Ford were running an experimental engine in a Fiesta, but don`t know what came of this. Any info would be appreciated Read more

I'm looking to buy an automatic medium sized car for under 2 grand as a family runaround/2nd car. There doesn't seem to be much about apart from Volvo 440s which are relatively plentiful eg 94M 1.8 SE with FVSH and 54k. Is this a good choice (I've read some reports about poor reliability)? Also is there anything else I should consider? Of primary inportance are safety and reliability, I'm not really concerned with image or performance on this car

Thanks Read more

Marc

Thanks for the comments all. The other cars I'm considering are a 93-94 Rover 216/416 but am concerned about parts availability. A 94M Fiesta 1.3 Ghia 5 dr auto also looks like a good car but may be too small (and possibly unreliable)

Most other contenders are too large eg Granada, Merc 190, Mk I Mondeo etc. The car is to be used as a runaround for my partner who has not driven for a few years - she wants something mid sized, safe in the event of a crash and auto to save stalling.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the issue with the CVT box on the Volvo?

I took my 1989 1.0 Rover Metro into a rapid-service type brake outfit this morning, as my brakes did not feel right (brake pedal travelling too far, hand brake lever coming up too far and loss of "sharpness" when braking).

They have diagnised that the passenger side brake cylinder has cracked and leaked brake fluid over the shoes and drum. Shoes, drum and cylinder all need replacing.

Obviously the shoes and drum need replacing on both sides, if the cylinder on the drivers side is OK, does that need replacing too?

Thanks in advance,

Well those good people at UMSTelford replaced the heater matrix today, cost £179.18
They did try the RAC warranty people who told them I had invalidated the warranty because as I did not use a Main Ford Dealer to service the car, apparently (small print) I should have had a service performed at 6k mile intervals if not using a main dealer and not the Ford recommended 10K. As I have had 3 major services done by UMS since April this year, I would have thought this would have been adequate, but alas no, that?s another customer the RAC have lost and I?m down a few hundred pounds into the bargain
