Question Donuts ......
robert

I noticed circular tyre marks in a car park recently and was informed that these are called donuts and are caused by cars rotating!

How do they do that?

Does the procedure differ for front/rear drive?

Apart from tyre wear, what else is liable to fail ......

In anticipation ...... Read more

Round our way these marks tend to be created using stolen/ non registered Sierras and Carltons...

See on news that the "feminists" have been protesting about the use of a model (female) in underwear to advertise the motorshow. Isn't it about time that the males started protesting also?! After all, isn't it demeaning to males to suggest that we might be influenced by the sight of a partially dressed young lady?!! Surely it's just the cars we are interested in - or is it equally demeaning to suggest that all we are interested in is sex and cars??!!

P.S. Haven't seen the offending poster myself - is it anywhere on the internet?
That new Bentley is a bit of alright - I wonder when Haynes is going to strip her down for a new manual?? Read more

I suppose it is OK then for the BBC to hire billboards to advertise a new series, the image in question features the naked bodies of four muscular young men viewed from the rear. Any complaints yet do we know?

An odd thing just happened. I posted a thread asking for opinions on changing my Passat (interior rattles all the time), for an MG ZT. (Which I test drove and was great). I went away to check my e-mails, came back and the thread had disappeared.
Well, I'll ask again, what do you think, Passat 1.8T or MG ZT. Read more

VW seem to have a quality control crisis at the moment with some of their models. If you aren't a badge snob what about the Skoda equivalent?

That said, I think Id give the MG the chance providing you canfind or know of a good MG Rover dealer near you!

midlifecrisis

I have owned a Passat 1.8T for six months, drives OK, but a bit dull. However the interior groans and rattles more than any car I have ever owned. I escaped from SWMBO today and test drove an MGZT. Fantastic drive and interior felt very solid. I've owned three Rovers in the past and never had a problem.
Opinions please.

We had an MG-Rover ZT180+ demonstrator down from the factory a few weeks ago for a customer and I took it home for a couple of nights - very impresssed.

Almost too lively in Sport Mode!!

Does anyone have any experience of this device? Makro have it in this week's Mail for £99. I found a few references on the net but no reviews. It is a Dutch device so I wonder whether it will cope with our speed detection equipment, and which devices it will detect.

And as I know people here frown on these devices, so I'll say I'm asking for a friend... Read more

Hi

I to have been interested in this radar detector, the problem is that it is only 135euros in Holland not the £250rrp as Makro states. As no one in the UK seems to sell this device I have decided to leave it well alone. You can pick up the Snooper S1 for £79.99 which is cheaper and is practically the same spec.

Hope this helps

Paul

p.s Makro price is £117 with the VAT

I sometimes find I can't get a reply to attach to the post I'm aiming it at. Instead, it appears at the bottom. If I re-boot my PC (Win 2k, so usually I just lock it) the problem goes away for a short while but then returns.

Any ideas? Read more

Firstly I am going to move this to the Discussion Forum where you will egt more feedback.

Secondly, try looking in threaded view and see if it still doesn't look right.

If some replies to a particular message before you do, then their reply or replies will appear before yours.

Question Autobox Life
rg

Folks,

I am considering a Citroen XM estate 2.1 Diesel auto to replace my Peugeot 405 GRD 1.9 which is in it's twilight years at 250K.

As with many XM issues, opinions are polarised regarding the life of the box.

With proper ATF changes and decent oil, what is:

1/ The life of a normal auto box on most cars?

2/ Ditto, but of the XM?

Point 2/ is tricky, as the vast majority of XMs have been abused and ill-maintained. And then there are the ones -without- Citroen main dealer FSH...

Terry B are you there? How did your XM survive transcontinental caravan towing?

Any comments on what makes auto boxes generally live longer, (and what are the signs of illness) much appreciated.

Hi Rob, I used to own a Peugeot 605 diesel auto for minicabbing, sold it with 225,000 miles on it,still good. I did however change the fluid every 40k and put Wynnes auto box additive in,an autobox repairer swore by it, and used it in every rebuild.

Question Pug 205
Peter

The screen wash pump has ceased to function when selected on the stalk. However, the pump when tested with an independent supply is fully serviceable. The pump draws its supply from the fuse box sharing a fuse with other working circuits. Am I right in thinking that the pump energising part of the stalk assembly is defunct or is there something else I should bear in mind.

If it proves expensive, I shall install a separate switch and fuse for the pump.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Read more

Peter,
IMO It's probably the switch on the stalk. Best bet is to get down to the local scrappies and get one off another Pug. Can't see it costing more than £10 if your car is more than a few years old.

Good Luck

Over the weekend I went to a local retail park (Curry's, Carphone Warehouse etc). When I returned to my vehicle it had a parking ticket on the windscreen for parking in a disabled bay without badge. I had not noticed a wheelchair painted on the bay so technically they are correct (before those who critisise me for doing this, I genuinely did not notice and I would NEVER knowingly park in a disabled bay).

The car park is patrolled by Local Parking Services, I assume on behalf of the retailers. On the ticket it gives me an opportunity to either pay £30-00 within 7 days or after that the full fee of £50-00 becomes due. After 14 days it states that enforcement will be taken to recover the costs. The ticket has my make and reg number (but no model or colour) on it, date/time and nature of offence. There are warning signs at various points in the car park.

Does anybody know if they can enforce this and do I really have to pay.

Many thanks. Read more

And when you're paying the fine, write a thank you note that it's only £30. I accept that you wouldn't do it deliberately but the parking people have no way of checking that and the result is the same for the disabled person it allegedly protects. I know it's harsh but it's not worth fighting in this case.

Oh, he beat me. Actually I revised my figures up a bit based on Autotrader - so maybe it's just a particularly expensive week.
