Can any one tell me what I need to do to put a 2.0 efi engine into my Sierra 1.8lx. My 1.8lx is auto whereas the 2.0efi is a manual Read more

For the time, effort and money involved, you would be far, far better off finding yourself a different Sierra with the 2.0 engine already fitted!
Very rare any Sierra makes more than £300 these days, which is less than you'd spend getting your LX right.
As an added bonus, most 2.0efi Sierras would have been a higher spec than LX, so you get extra toys to play with too!
Also, if you swapped engines in your LX most insurers would charge you more than if you simply bought a different car.

Thinking of buying one of these vehicles. Can anyone tell me what to look out for. I am looking at spending between £4000 & £5000.

Also are they a favourite amongst thieves?

I ran one of these for 6 months. Has to be one of the best Hot Hatches ever (grown up 205 Gti 1.9).
Common problems are :
Steering rack hydraulic arm leaking.(DIY £80)
Wishbones bushes wear out - tyres wear uneven and gives a wandering feeling when braking (very cheap and quick to fix).
1st and 2nd gear a bit notchy when cold but fine once warmed up.
Engine does sound noisey when cold but should clear once warmed up.
Had to replace throttle cable on mine due to tight kink in engine bay (£26 DIY)
Make sure you get a late 1997 model with front face lift and interior changes. CD became standard in 1998.
Superb car, sounds like a rally car when taken over 5000RPM ,truely addictive performance which you can use.
Highly recommended !

Hi
Has anyone had a problem with a 2000 Accent gearbox?
It has been a problem since it was new. It is mainly second gear, which 'crunches' when changing from first to second.
The local dealer has done a couple of mods which has made little difference. I suspect that it is a common problem but the dealer is reluctant to confirm this. Any comments?

Still no word from the Hyundai dealer, so nothing new to report.
I think I'll pass on the Mondeo offer!

Question Keyless entry
malcolm

Having lost the remote for my Honda Civic and costing the thick end of £100 to replace, I have decided to replace it with a radio controlled device instead of the next to useless infra red system fitted as standard.
Can anyone recommend a suitable keyless entry system, diy or technician fit or should I have an alarm fitted inc. keyless entry but minus an immobilisor, which is fitted as standard.
Regards Malcolm. Read more

Yes, Maplins would, in my book, be the place to go. I fitted out my old MK1 Nissan Prairie (non central locking) with five lock actuators, alarm, immobiliser etc, etc, from Maplins, for about £120. I found the complete installation easy to install but with just the basic central unit and remote "key", I should think that it should be possible to adapt it to the Honda setup.
Maplins are very helpful and, I am sure they would advise on a suitable basic system to replace the infra red operation with one using remote radio control.

Did anyone see the motorshow programme on BBC 1 today? Quite good, but the little cockney bloke sat next to Damon Hill... Don't think I've ever seen a presenter projectile vomit before. Top class TV.

Excellent - hope they cleaned the Merc up - classic phrase though just before the vomit trick. "I know it has airbags - hope it has s**tbags as well !"

No, only criminals and terrorists are allowed guns in the UK.

I`m off to check out an automatic 2.0 and a 2.5 V6 Galant Estate in the next day or two. They look ideal: the size of an Omega with the reliability of a Honda and no image to speak of so minimal theft worrys!! Reasonable insurance - even for the 2.5 - and well within my £10K budget. As long as I can comfortably get my rather long legs in (having failed in Saabs, Subarus and many other vehicles) my quest could be at an end. Does anyone have any experience of these vehicles? Any tips regarding ownership or faults to look out for would be much appreciated.

Cheers. Read more

Sadly, my very long legs will not fit comfortably into a Galant. A real shame as the two I looked at were both beautiful motors with a real discrete but tasteful look about them. Whilst I`m not excessively tall (6` 4") my very long inside leg allied to a dodgy right knee is making car selection very awkward. My Octavia has stacks and stacks of front knee room but the drivers seat (as well as being incredibly uncomfortable) puts my knee into an uncomfortable angle for long trips. So, Lexus GS 300 is back at the head of my list. If it only it had split/fold rear seats!!

I have a VW Golf 1.6 (1998) and the bulb appears to have blown behind the heating/ventilation controls. I am keen to attempt to fix this myself as my local dealer tells me it would cost about £36 for them to replace the bulb as the panel has to be dismantled.
Can anyone please help me with some easy to follow instructions as I dont really know where to start? Read more

Anybody else waiting like me? Note of caution.

I recently bought a new A4 Avant and discovered the climate control was not working correctly. My Audi garage took a look, confirmed the fault and ordered new parts. I'm still waiting and it's been about a month so far. It seems that a large proportion of all new A4s are similarly effected (6 out of 10 from my dealer). If this proportion is extrapolated to the whole of the UK (or God forbid Europe). Then I might be waiting this time next year.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Thanks Roger1. That's interesting, as the older style VAG 'Climatronic' unit was not exactly immune from failure either. Problem nowadays, is they have to be coded to the ECU, pushing us independants out of the market.
