Question Omega Air Bags
Jason M

I have just purchased a 2000 Omega MV6 and was wondering if anyone else out there knew how to deactivate the passenger-side airbags. The garage I bought it from claimed they couldn't do it and that they'd had a lot of problems when they'd tried to do it to another customer's car. My vehicle doesn't have the passenger detection capability (obviously!) of the newer models.

Any hints or tips gratefully received.

One other option to enable you to keep an eye on your little'un whilst she's in a rear-facing seat in the back is to purchase a stick-on mirror and fit it on the rear window (or wedge it under the centre-rear headrest as I did in my Focus for a closer view) so's you can keep an eye by a glance in your rear-view mirror.

On the other hand I guess if it's an Omega the rear window is probably a bit too far away for this to work, unless you go for the headrest option!

Annoyingly there's only one position I can place my 5-month son Alex's rear-face seat in in my Focus - behind the passenger seat. With my 6'1" frame there's not enough space behind my seat which also rules out the centre, plus like you I have the airbag in the front...

Hello All ,

I wish to update my old radio to a quality RDS one.

The Becker radios always get a good review , have a simple intuitive layout and do not have the Las Vegas style flashing lights that most car radios now have.

However they are very expensive : £500 upwards.

I have been offered a used Becker Mexico 2330 by a chap in Germany but I cannot find any detail of the 'spec on the Becker site.

The 2330 may be an older radio but that worries me not as long as it does the job.

Can anyone point me to any details and also any comments about Becker and other quality radio cassettes are very welcome.

My requirements are a simple easy layout,RDS ,two tuners so the radio automaticaly retunes itself as the car changes transmitter areas, and a cassette for my book tapes.

The Becker appears to be the only radio with two tuners but someone may be able to tell me of others.

Thanks for reading this

Hi again,

The latest Becker Mexico pro (4527 cassette ,4627 CD ) have two round knobs for volume and OK/select rather than the up/down switch type.

I am not an expert but I thought that the US did not enjoy RDS transmissions. There are also some minor variations on the wave lengths also. Best to check if you are buying for the US market.

There is a Becker US forum and FAQ's at

www.beckerautosound.com/

where you will get more expert advice than I can give.

Good luck

Question Passat Groans
midlifecrisis

I've recently purchased a year old Passat 1.8T SE. I decided on this car after losing so much money on my previous Mondeo. I am very satisfied with the car but with one exception. The Dashboard groans and creaks with every imperfection in the road and around every bend. It comes from the nearside, underneath where the tax disc is. The noise is VERY loud and is driving me mad. I thought I was buying build quality, but neither my old mondeo or my wifes Fiesta rattle like this. Has anyone else had any similar experiences and would the warranty cover this problem. (It's an approved used VW.)

Midlife, you don't say how recently you purchased it, but I would have thought that a franchised dealer-supplied s/h car should be free from problems like this. Have you approached them yet?

Help, managed to spill some wonder wheels wheel cleaner on my leather front passenger seat (car 6 months old), it has of course removed a couple of small but very noticable areas of colour. Does anyone know of a company that can refurbish a small area. Have yet to try the jag dealer. Many thanks.

If you aren't too far away, call 01462 892704, talk to Fred.
These are the people that we use for interior trim repairs, very helpful very knowledgeable.
They are in Hertfordshire, but might be able to make a suggestion as to what you could do.

Can I ask how much? Whenever I see them they are going for sill money for what is a 10 year old car - usually £2000 plus.

Had my 51 model Passat TDI 130 serviced approximately 2000 miles ago at just below 10000 miles, and the service indicator has come on again already. Have spoken to the garage with a view to taking it back to see why (they weren't sure why it should happen!), but was wondering if anyone on here could offer any suggestions? If there's a problem anywhere I don't want it reset again, only fot it to come on again in a couple of months' time!

The car in question has the 'QG1' option on the vehicle details so it can use variable servicing. The garage said, though, that this was dependent on whether the supplying dealer set it up for the variable servicing and just because it had 'QG1' listed on the details, it didn't mean its servicing was variable. They therefore put me on a '10000 miles or 1 year' as usual; they said the variable servicing used different oil that was more expensive! Read more

I've had the same issue with my 97 Polo. Service indicator appears at completely random times. All the dealer does is reset it, which I can do myself.
Sorry to be of no help.

Just been reading on the www.andyspares.co.uk forum about another XUD TD conrod ending up on the outside of the block. This time in a ZX. Don't know what year it is, but anybody want a bet? Read more

False alarm! The above turns out to be a 1994 XUD TD engine so probably unconnected with the previous 306 engine failures.

Well SWMBO has persuaded me to change her ageing Astra for something 2-3 yrs old. After years of pootling (?) around town in a nervous sort of way she's faced with a daily commute of 50 miles and isn't looking foward to it one little bit.
Her criteria are that it has to have good visibility, high encap rating, 5 doors and be easy to manouevre and park. Budget around £6K. Performance not an issue but a bit of quality wouldn't go amiss.
Shortlist so far includes Yaris and A-Class.
Any other suggestions ?

Anyone offer advice on a comfortable midi-MPV?

I need to get a car with three proper seats in the back (three point seatbelts) and more head / legroom. I'm 6'3" and am finding that since testing some of the midi-MPVs, I feel like I'm sat on the floor, squashing my back when I sit in a normal car.

Coming from a SAAB 9000, and with a heavy-handed wife, I'm looking for something solid and reliable but not too big (not ready to pilot an Espace yet).

Auto preferred, cruise control a real bonus (considering afterfit)

Currently looked at:
Scenic (no support from seat, flimsy bits)
Picasso (had one on holiday, developed pathological hate of pillars after taking the windy road from Pollensa to Soller, Majorca)
Toyota Picnic (too old, back seat not suitable for sitting on)
Toyota Corolla Verso (ideal, boot a bit small, too expensive)
Zafira (utilitarian, good seats, no 3-point on back seat centre - why?)
Almera Tino - current favourite, not too exciting though

The above represent my opinions and I apoligise if I offend anyone with them - I am open to suggestions if you disagree.

Any comments gratefully received.

Thanks again, Nigel. Read more

Well, after a long hard look, including a drive of an Automatic Tino, we tried a T-reg Mercedes C200 Estate Auto.

What a glorious difference for the money. I know it's smaller, but it's comfortable, it goes and we can always hire a van if we need it.

Any comments on this one? May go back and buy it tomorrow.

I have read a few of the recommendations for companies that offer Cruise Control as an after-fit option.

Can anyone give me any guidance as to how reliable these are likely to be, given the propensity for a faulty one to cause serious trouble!

Many thanks. Read more

I had a cruise-control fitted by the firm in Kidderminster to my Xantia 2.1TD three and a half years ago. Several times I have driven down to Southern Spain, and on the long, straight roads it's made for effortless driving. Very reliable.
