Glaikit Wee Scunner {P}

The front Firestone tyres on my 2001 Passat PD TDI 100 bhp are down to 2mm tread after 10,000 miles. Wear is uniform across the tread.
Garage comment is basically they all do that.
This is the worst tyre wear in 30 years of motoring.
Any comments?

Thanks folks.
Will rotate tyres and get Michelins in due course.

i have a dual fuel car recently it has started missing slightly when i gently accelerate, once it gets past 2000rpm there's no problemit goes like hell with no misses at all!

i am going to fit new plugs(NGK) and i also want replace the H.T.Leads as someone has told me this will likely be the cause and that i should fit 8mm raceing leads but they cannot remember the make of these leads, he also says that the people who make the leads specify that they are up to the job when it comes to Lpg as you need a bigger spark to ignite the fuel.
does anyone know of these high performance leads? when i have asked at the car shops they look blank .

A larger voltage is needed to break down the spark gap when running on LPG. This is because the fuel/air mixture is homogeneous (i.e. dry), whereas with gasoline there are enough "wet" bits around to permit easy ionisation of the spark gap.

Typically, an engine which runs without misfire under all speeds and loads on a 1.0mm gap on gasoline, will need a 0.75mm gap on LPG.

I am going to be removing the cylinder head from my 88 Golf (1.6 carb) this weekend. I have managed to get hold of an M12 spline key for the cylinder head bolts, but after having a quick look it appears that the inlet manifold bolts are either spline or allen key, does anybody know because the manual is a little vague? Also the manual suggests that a special tool (VW3049A) is required to remove the retaining clips for the Exhaust manifold-to-downpipe flange. I have tried to get hold of one to Hire or borrow and nobody wants to know. Is it OK to remove the exhaust manifold from the head rather than remove the head with the manifold attached? Otherwise is there an alternative tool?

Sorry for all the questions but I am something of a beginner at this!

I have a 97 MK3 Golf VR6 and have noticed an alarming rear end skittishness when braking from speed or whilst travelling over bumps at speed (eg on a motorway). Anyone else had this problem? Car has done 65.5K

I'd go for Bilstein Sport dampers from Euro car parts with some h&r springs. I'd suggest looking at the rear axle bushes too.

You can choose not to believe me. That is pricisely what my solicitor had said would happen if I challenged the PC.

The answer is that you are missing the whole point: this PC cooked up the whole case against me - incident, place, dates, times, etc. to suit the law and himself. My account is absolutely true. The NIP was for a made up incident for a fictitious date. There was absolutely nothing I could do prove him wrong - except deny his story. My solicitor's view was that this man was a rogue PC and that I could not win. It cost me £600 fine+legalcosts, plus 3 points. Two years later, this same PC was caught doing this to someone else - the story appeared in all the National newspapers. I went back to my Solicitor and he said to get my case re-examined would probably cost in excess of £5000 and I would not get legal aid. So I let it go.

This happened a few years ago, it still bothers me that I was stitched up in this way. I had no defence, and that I still do not know why that PC took exception to me or my car. I discovered later that he lived two roads away and that he frequently saw me in my car in town. He worked in the adjoining county 5 miles away.

I am now extremely suspicious of all Police and avoid getting involved even when I witness a crime. This is despite the fact that I now personally know 3 local police officers, and have a contact very high up in the Home Office.

Because this incident bothers me so much, I have kept all the papers to show my son when he is old enough: so that he can be aware of that these things can happen for no apparent reason.

The car-by-car-breakdown section mentions the following problem with the K series engine

'inlet manifold 'O' rings tend to perish between 25 - 30,000 miles'.

I have seen this comment on the Parkers web site also.

Can anyone confirm where these 'O' rings live... I was under the impression that a gasket sits between the manifold and head gasket and I cant figure out which 'O' rings are being refered to...

Any ideas? Read more

MoJo

This isn't really a reply as much as more questions...

What are the symptoms of these o-rings having perished? My car is really lumpy when on choke and holds its revs between gearchanges, are these symptoms of perished inlet o-rings??

Richy-F, if you have found out any info could you please let me know...

Thanks,

Hello all.

As some of you may now from my previous posts I am the owner of a 1990 Nugget Yellow Corrado.

As you may expect of a 12 year old car, it's starting to show it's age. It has some minor rust around both front wheel arches, A scuff on the rear bumper and a few other little patches. I went to a local dent/scratch/panel re-sprayer. He said that the car was in overall good condition, but that the marks were to spread out for them to be repaired with out making the car look like a patch work quilt.

He said the only way forward was to respray it, or sell it on and buy a new one. He didn't do full re-sprays but he thought it would cost about a £1000 - £1200 for a good quality re-spray. (does this sound about right?)

Have had a look for Corrado's on autotrader. Most of the ones for sale (I'm looking for a 1.8 or 2.0 16v) have similiar or higher mileage than mine (Mines done 108,000) and cost around £4000. Or they have done 86,000 miles which is the mileage that My Corrado was on when I first bought it. I don't want to buy one of these and have to do all the work that I have done to mine all over again! (I've had a new, exhaust, clutch, clutch master cylinder, power steering pump, Brake Discs)

I'm sorry for rambling on, My question is:

Should I sell my car, which considering it needs touching up I'll be lucky to get £2000 for. Get a loan and get a nice 2.0 16v L plate with 60,000 miles on it. OR should I pay £1500 for a profesional re-spray and keep my car as I know it's history etc?

My mothers argument is that I should get a loan and get a new car entirely, clio..something like that. But to be honest no cars do it for me quite like the Corrado(Strange aren't I!?!)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I should be in my new house. I noticed that it has a satellite dish on the side, although no decoder box - presumably I can pick up one of these cheaply enough. Question is, which satellite channel package should I go for if I want to see lots of motorsport and car related stuff? I had cable TV a few years ago and that gave me bikes, drag racing, NASCAR and tractor pulling (much more entertaining than it sounds), but I can't remember which channel. Any suggestions welcome.

I just wanted to clarify -

1. Whether it is OK to fit a forward facing child seat to the front seat where a passenger "front" airbag is fitted?
2. Again, the seat in the same configuration as above but where there are "front" and "side" airbags fitted?

In both cases the airbags can't be manually switched off.

Many thanks,

Chad,
The old 2 in the back theory works best.
Yesterday SWMBO was in the back seat next to Richard's (10 days old) seat, while Iandra (26 mths) was transferred (in seatu) to the passenger seat.
Iandra decided to throw a wobbler when we were on the motorway back home(I had stopped her playing around with the electric windows), and (a) kicked the on-off switch off the radio, and (b) caught the "Sport" button on top of the gearshift with her heel, causing the car to take off like a scalded cat.
Spanking [1] followed, but she won't be riding in the front seat again.

[1] We can do that here. The PC mob haven't got this far!

I need to replace the drivers side fog lights on my E reg (MK2?) Toyota Supra. The light fits in to a cup which is attached to the front spoiler. The cup itself has rusted through so the light can not be retained. I have bought the parts (£100 thank you Mr. Toyota) but it would seem to me that I have to remove the whole of the spoiler to fit the cup from the rear. Is this the case and if so can anyone tell me where the fasterners for the spoiler are located? Read more
