88 Golf - Cylinder Head questions - Andy Davies
I am going to be removing the cylinder head from my 88 Golf (1.6 carb) this weekend. I have managed to get hold of an M12 spline key for the cylinder head bolts, but after having a quick look it appears that the inlet manifold bolts are either spline or allen key, does anybody know because the manual is a little vague? Also the manual suggests that a special tool (VW3049A) is required to remove the retaining clips for the Exhaust manifold-to-downpipe flange. I have tried to get hold of one to Hire or borrow and nobody wants to know. Is it OK to remove the exhaust manifold from the head rather than remove the head with the manifold attached? Otherwise is there an alternative tool?

Sorry for all the questions but I am something of a beginner at this!

Andy

Have most of this sorted now, I nicked the girlfriends mirror from hewr handbag! Onll one problem left I think. The Allen key slot on the upper timing belt cover appears to have corroded badly, either that or it has been riveted before, any ideas?

The tool for removing and refitting the exhaust are available from a good factor or accessory shop. The manifold bolts are allen headed. Remove the manifolds after you have the head off. Get help as it is heavy. Why you wanna takea de head off anyway?
