I am an RAC member but don't like the limit of 14 days alternative vehicle cover as that might expire with still a week of hols to go (if started 7 days before departure) so I am looking at Europ Assistance because they include £1,500 worth of hire car (Enough for about 6 weeks of Mondeo in France) Read more
Before I start I would like to say I am unaware of the most abbropriate plce for this request so if it needs mooving or gets flamed for being wrong soory.
My question is with regards to honest john saying that with vauxahlls sayin you should always look for a good discount. Could someone please tell me what is classed as being a good discount the question in particular refers to a Corsa SXI 1.2 petrol and SXI 1.7DTi. I am going for a test drive in the diesal (they have brought uit in for me as no other dealer seems to have one is this a point to show how keen they are to sell) but I am wordering what sort of price I should be aiming for should I try and get a price simliar to that of companies drive the deal.com or import prices also should I try and financ eht dela or use there 0% interst loan given that i should have the required deposit . I have no use for the years free insurance due to being 19 so that should knock the price down. ALso what sort of discount should I be looking at for accesories (Alarm or ABS). Many thanks in advance. Edd Read more

I did exactly what HJ has suggested. Local dealer started at retail, and when I mentioned the Vx internet site as being the starting point for discussion, grudgingly offered to match it.
So, it was onto the net, and Gary Bain came up with the goods. There was a discount (c10%)on the accessories I had (ABS + metallic). Luckily the dealer Gary uses had just the car on order anyway!

I need to buy a new Toyota Corolla 1.4 VVTi T3 5 door in met silver and the dealers will only give a token few hundred pounds off the list price of £12250. Motorpoint/trade-sales etc don't have any (probably because it is a very new model) and e-mails to a couple of dutch dealers reveals they claim they can't yet get RHD models. Any ideas or will my local dealer be the only option??
thanks

I have a 98 2.0TD Primera, and have recently bought new front pads and discs from Partco.
I have a nagging feeling that they have supplied the wrong pads, as I am sure they don't look the same as when I replaced them last time.
What worries me is very quick look the parts guy had at the Lucas catalogue before he disappeared into the stores, and that I have been quoted two different prices by two branches.
If anyone has access to a Lucas catalogue (why isn't it online?, Mintex's one is), please can you check the following part numbers.
Front Pads GDB3168
Front Discs DF2591T
Last thing I want to do on Sunday morning is to take the car apart, only for them not to fit! Read more
Seven years old, surely an all time record?
Does anyone know a source of touch up paint that MATCHES and which can be smoothed in to the surroundng paint? The colour is Ford pacific green metallic.
Halfords paint (comes in a small three bottle touch up kit) is significantly darker than my car and the varnish is not fully transparent. All in all it is poor.
Ford touch up paint (comes in a small two bottle touch up kit) is good until I try and smooth it: wet and dry paper turns it silver, and Turtlewax Safe Cut makes it lighter.
I have pretty much figured out how to get a near invisible repair to a paint chip apart from matching the colour.
Thanks. Leif. Read more
Leif,
Twice I've resorted to buying 1/2 litre of paint from the factors in the hope of getting a good colour match, but still no success (different colours to yours).
Are Holt's DupliColours still made? I seem to recall these as being better than some, though I think they were aerosol sprays rather than brushing paints. I have applied paint from aerosols with a brush before now by spraying it into the lid and dipping the brush in it.
I have BMW's own brush touch-up paint/lacquer and this is a good match on my almost-black car (an easy colour to match) but the supplied brush is more suited to sweeping the yard.
Hi all
I have a strange ( to me ) problem with my 1997 Peugeot 306
I have the warning light for ABS on and at the same time my automatic headlights and my backing light is not functioning , so i looked into the user manual and found that these things is under the same fuse , BUT , the fuse is OK , so does anyone have an idea what could be wrong here. Sorry if my english is not perfect but i am Danish !!

Suggest you get hold of a voltmeter - if not a 12v bulb and leads. Connect one terminal to earth and then check if there is 12v (or bulb lighting) at the live side of the fuse. If there is no supply then try upstream of this for breaks in the circuit. If both sides of the fuse are live then fault is between the fuse output side and the devices. Worth checking to see if there is arelay controlling these and if so you might be able to substitute. Don't get stressed out and take your time - there should be no black magic here.
Calling all Golf (TDI in particular) Drivers.
My company runs a couple of 51 reg Golf SE TDI's (100bhp).
Both drivers are complaining of incredibly bouncey front suspension. One has clouted a cats eye in the bottom of a dip recently, the other had a minor off road excursion recently due to excessive bounce.
Both cars have been serviced recently (10K @ 3 months old) and VW were told to investigate - No fault found..(no suprises there then).
I have heard a rumour that VW are having problems with these diesel cars and damage to the underside of the engine bay. On mine the belly pan is ripped where it covers the sump.
These are treated as rep-mobiles ( ie 800-1000 miles a week - mostly motorway miles)
Previous cars where a t reg 2.0LS Vectra and a r reg Peugeot 406 1.8 - (not exactly known for amazing handling.)
Anyone else having similar problems?
Anyone else complained to VW?
Help us please......

I think that being able to tell us about it is a good enough reason to stick with VW. Anyone tried that in a Citroen?
My Mark IV Golf SDI seemed to have a rather low ground clearance at the front - perhaps the PDI does/did as well? It is a poor setup that allows a car to hit the road before the bump stops.
My current ,Passat, PDI 100 is a litle bit woolly but handles a great deal better than the Golf ever did.And the ground clearance is better.
Hello ,
has anyone out there owned or know of some that has owned an s2 avant . I'm considering buying one on a budget of 9k which should see a nice low ( ish ) mileage 95 model . Any feed back would be much appreciated , cheers Benno2 Read more
Benno,
I have only just registered with Honest John and hence have just seen this. You have probably bought a car already but if not thought you might be interested in my experiences. I have an Audi S2 Avant which I have owned from new in 1993 (and which has done 110000 miles). It has been maintained regardless of expense by specialists AmD of Bicester. It has also been sensibly modified by the same people (but never been used on a track).
Main mods are remapped and tweaked engine to give 300bhp and 360 lbs.ft. of torque, Koni adjustable shocks, Porsche 993 Turbo front brakes, s/steel exhaust and new alloys with Eagle F1 tyres. It has been used as a main family car, both locally and for longer holiday journeys.
It has been wonderfully reliable as well as having stunning performance - with 4 wheel drive a real bonus.
I have often considered replacinmg it but never found anythiong which represents value in comparison. I am however finally looking to sell it as circumstances have changed - and I have acquired a few other cars so need the space. If you are still interested let me know (austin@kbnet.co.uk).
I am required to submit my car for an MOT test before the usual 3 year time, because it is used for private hire.
So: it is a 17 month old MB 320 CDI diesel with 45,000 on the clock. I am told it will be revved to max. governed revs. up to 10 times to get the acceptable readings - I am also told I should make sure the cam belt/chain is in good nick ( sounds ominous).
What else should I do? Should I decline their very kind offer to rev. my engine, possibly to destruction? I would appreciate any help or advice.
Regards, Don Read more
The whole principle of the emissions test is flawed. On the road you never rev an engine in neutral. As it is aimed at emission control in town a better test would be to check the emissions when idling.
The aircon on my Beamer is doing some strange things. On Auto the aircon kicks in for a few minutes and then after a few miles it will switch off then back on again and then off again etc as if it does not know what to do. It also seems to know only two settings on both auto and manual either off or full on and nothing in between.
Any ideas?

Sounds like the climate panel to me. BMW are well used to replacing them, and only they can do it as it needs coding in to the ecu.
Cheers
I'll have a look.
