They did a good job hiding the filter on the old 190! Read more
Hi all,
My next-door neighbour has an F reg Micra 1.2 GSX. He bought it 10 years ago with 3k on the clock, it now has 11.500. Over the last 6 months or so he has been having problems starting it. He bought a new battery and had the car serviced a few weeks ago, but today it wouldn't start. After a lot of turning over it finally fired up, so i took it out for an 'Italian Tune Up'.
It coughed a bit at first, but that cleared up after a couple of miles and went smoothely enough after that. I have told him to take it for a run once or twice a week, but he just nods and carries on regardless.
He now wants to have it serviced, so what do the backroomers suggest he has done apart from the oil, filter and plugs ? Read more
Bet the petrol in the tank is old.
Try to run as near to empty as possible, then fill up with some fresh juice.
Worth a try, he will use it anyway (eventually!!) so a no real cost option for a possible result.

Anyone care to offer an opinion on the cause of the monster pile-up at the start of the race?
Was it Barichello weaving about or Schumacher, R attempting a hopelessly optimistic close overtake?
Opinions are seriously divided in this household - if I don't get some more input, i'll be cooking my own tea!
Good news though for Minardi, Paul Stoddart and Mark Webber. Read more
Well, I'm a bit hazy too, but the 250 came later, I thought. I remember reading a suitably gob-smacked review of the 500 when it came out - I guess the tyres, brakes and power-band added to the excitement!
I had a 30k budget to spend on my latest car but what is the point? Tell me what a Mondeo or Focus doesn't do that a BMW or a Merc does? I had a last series Modeo V6 for 70000 miles and it was better in every respect than its C-class predecessor.
If you are so insecure that you need to see the BMW or whatever badge in front of you then suggest you see a shrink. The differences in quality are perceived.
Me, I saved 14 grand of my own money and I'm quite content. And no I'm not telling but my wife reckons its at least as good as her Audi A6. Read more
And I meant to say, the GS actually lasted quite well (16 years), possibly because it was originally bought in France, although RHD. The engine was amazing - it just kept on keeping on, and it would hold 100mph for miles, despite being fully laden.
I may be over-sensitive about rust, though, having owned both an Alfasud and a Lancia Beta! What bothers me about modern cars is that, as HJ says, it only needs some engine management component or an ABS pump to fail and you may as well scrap the thing.
In June 2001, I was caught on camera doing 124kph in a 120 kmph zone. To make things complicated, I was driving hire car with German Plates, so by the time I was traced, the summons was sent to me on 15th Jan for a 31 Euro fine
Am not proficient in Dutch but the only way to pay is via a euro cheque or through a dutch post office or bank. How does an ordinary non Euro tourist pay this ? I sent a 20 quid note to a dutch associate who sorted it out for me but what about others ? Read more
In the Netherlands there is no 120 kph. zone;their national limit is 100 kph. That's why you were flashed.
Well, James, David W, Alvyn Booth and Ian Cook, between you you've done it again.
Ronald the aging Renault 5 with the seized rear drum is off again. David in fact got it EXACTLY right - lining detached from shoe. I now believe unreservedly that a big hammer is number one piece of essential gear.
So, why the 'alas'? Wife and self had a secret prayer that Ronald would get himself off without further ado to the big other-world car park, and had resolved that anything over twenty five quid would finally bankrupt step daughter. Unfortunately twenty quid cracked it, so there will be lots more of what step-d calls teething problems with Ronald for you good guys to solve.
Thanks again for all your help.

I still think that a new BMW 330 (your other daughter's impending purchase) will be a bigger worry!
My '91 Cavalier GSI 4X4 has an annoying habit of illuminating the engine management warning light at between 60-70mph. When this happens you can feel the engine tighten.
As I accelerate to motorway speeds the warning light will come on and stay on. If increase to 80mph and switch off the engine for a couple of seconds, the light will stay off and the engine cleans up. However if I drop to 70 or below quite often it happens again. The hotter the weather the more often this happens. I'm quite sure this must be a sensor problem.
Can anyone suggest what is could be? Read more
Aside from the fact that I understood little of what you said, the bits that I did understand sound likely.
Strange that mucky petrol should cause it though. I use the same garage for the 4 Runner and it never has a problem.
I do occasionally think about filling up there to see if the problem comes back, but it seems like tempting fate.
I own a carlton 2.0 GLI, the drivers seat vertical adjustment is jammed about 1/2 way up, being 6 foot tall this means that my head is brushing the roof, after a long journey I get a stiff neck from sitting at a strange angle. I've had the seat out and can't work out how to release it. There are 2 allen screws on thr circular box which presumably has a dirty great spring in it, unclear what they are for. I'm not bothered about retaining the adjustment function, I just need to get the seat a bit lower. Any suggestions? Read more
Beware of strong springs in seats - they can inflict pain & injury.
Suggest a quick visit to a Vauxhall dealer for an opinion (don't do 1st theing in the morning when they are busy). They might tell you how to do it or tell you its a half hour job and charge you £20 or £30.
Looking @ it in perspective, its not such a lot of money, you wont maim yourself and it will solve the problem ......
In case anyone misses the thread, thanks to MOOSH posting on 2 March - check this site - well worth half an hour of anyone\'s time who may be slightly interested in motoring which, let\'s face it, you wouldn\'t be here otherwise!

i own a 1973 austin minivan which is under restoration, i am going to fit a low milage 1098 unit into the car. Due to the fact that it shares the engine oil with the gearbox, and that the engines are old fashioned and not as well built as nowadays. What can i do to preserve the life of the engine, as well as keep it relatively refined and pleasant to drive. My father has also recently purchased a new ford focus, would it be worth putting a product such as slick 50 engine treatment into both or either of the cars to improve their lifesapn?

I can tell you that Merc's smooth undertrays definitely work. In fact, I did tell you in the E Class Merc W211 road test. The E320 is ridiculously quick on top speed for a mere 224 bhp. You just can't have that and Morris Minor maintenance.
