There are reports of abnormally high failure rates of the MB 722.6 autoboxes between 60-100k. These are no longer given interim oil changes(sealed for life)
HJ always recommends such changes. The boxes are also fitted to Jaguar & RR.
Has HJ or anyone confirmation of this rumour ?

Sorry guys, I've always known RR as Rolls-Royce, it's a history thing.

1990 thru 1997 editions of Perfomance Car Magazine, possibly some issues
missing. In good condition. Read JC before he became a multimedia star (and lost it). Excellent bath time reading. Whoever wants them can have them, either collect or arrange payment of carriage, I can assure that there is no reference to Ladas any of them. Get them before they get recycled. No strings, no implications. E-mail requests. A damn good read in its time. Read more

Gwyn,

Hi all

just wondered whether anyone knows what car is currently offering best MPG or MPL? on petrol, diesel and LPG. I heard of a new Citroen giving 67mpg which is quite something? Are there any other serious contenders which are commerically available? Read more

Absolutely! My GF had a Citroen Visa that cost £200 and lasted for 4 years, with almost no attention (apart from regular oil changes). It wasn't that thirsty, but it would have had to have drunk an awful lot to have cost as much to run as one of these ghastly new diesels...

Stupid, I know, but ...
My car has just been in for an auto-gearbox fix.
Apart from the old arm-and-leg bill, it just doesn't feel *right*... It's running fine, no apparent problem, but ...
This same phenomena occurs every time anybody else drives my car - be it brother, sister, mother, father, workmate, mechanic etc
Despite often NOT having to adjust the seat/mirrors/steering wheel/etc, it just doesn't feel *right* ...
In between, I don't drive another car, so it isn't that ...
Am I just being paranoid, or do other folk feel this way? Read more

I have a very funny book called The meaning of liff. It's a sort of dictionary.
Shrivenham is described as "The vague uncomfortable you get when sitting on a seat which is still warm from somebody else's bottom"

Two years ago I filled up with Halfords deluxe anti-freeze. Which, I noted, was a Trigard formulation.

Yesterday I was in the store, and I picked up a container which looked similar; but on reading the label it is now an advanced protection, but otherwise conventional, ethylene glycol based coolant. It?s recommended by Merc and Saab, so it?s obviously good stuff, but I?m wondering if these or other mfrs would consider that Trigard would give even better protection, and what is the difference between these formulations anyway? Does anyone know what the new antifreeze sold by the VW group over the past couple of years is? I found this was in my Audi and apparently it isn't compatible with ethylene glycol. The Audi people told me it doesn't need changing every few years.
The stuff in the Audi is a blue colour, but I gather VW now have yet another, pink antifreeze that isn't to be mixed with their blue liquid, let alone ethylene glycol.

Can these fluids really be left in the car permanently, and what are they?

Having been absent from the back room for some time.....What is the current protocol on advertising freebies. (i.e items to give away to a good "petrolhead" home) Read more

Mark (Brazil)

Martyn passed comment on this recently, and I can't find his note.

However, if I recall correctly, he said that adverts for sale were usually a no-no, especially without checking with him first, but that things "free to a good home" were fine within reason.

I'd take that to mean that if it is a genuine freebie that you simply want shot of, which might help someone else, then he will have no objection.

However, I wouldn't be putting in For SAle ads, or anything with strings or implications attached.

I wonder whether Sir Clive Sinclair gave up his rights to the C5 trade name without a struggle? ;-)

Posted a week ago or so re: badly wearing tyre. I got onto BMW to see if there was a common problem and they said no and I should have something called a KDS test (Optical Alignment test where they put a camera on each wheel).

Now the charge for this is a p1*$ taking £140. I asked whether my local tyre chap could do it and they said that your ****-*** would probably not, but I have a good company round the corner (Munster Tyres) whose wheel alignment machine (he says cost) £9.5k and he charges a not inconsiderable £35.

Being ignorant on these matters I presume that the £35 job does exactly the same as the £140 one (except doesn't use BM cameras!). I also take it that a perfectly good job can be done without the aid of cameras. Read more
