Keep posting press releases to HJ but no sign of him is he on a well deserved holiday? Read more
H.J. is always on about how important regular oil and filter changes are. Can anyone explain why this is and what the main benefits are for this expense.

Chris,
A modern engine is a significant % of the cars new cost. Oil is relatively cheap and I think can be described as an engines life blood.
The huge variability as to the type of use and driving a car gets, from short local trips to long motorway driving at high speed, can throw enormous demands on the best quality oil "systems". It is not difficult or particularly expensive to change, and will almost certainly provide usefull insurance against expensive garage bills when the car approaches 70 to 100 K miles on its speedometer.
If you change your car as regularly as womanfolk change their summer wardrobe then I guess its not a significant issue for you!

Hi,
I have a legal problem, my old car that I sold about a month ago has been caught by a speed camera and is still registered in my name. It looks like the new owner did not register the car.
Trouble is, I know this person and am reluctant to pass on their identity unless I really have to. I cannot be sure it was them driving though. Does my responsibility to give details on who was driving end when the car no longer belongs to me? I am tempted to say nothing more than "I sold this car several weeks ago and now drive (reg.no of new car)".
Any advice greatly appreciated
Regards,

You could, Graham, but I think the post mark might give it away :-)
Just browsing through the March issue of Diesel Car and happened on a report on the Detroit motor show. It seems that the next thing to hit us will be the "Crossover" car.
What on earth is that? The photos (mostly concepts) seem to show them as a stunted cross between a 4x4, SUV, and MPV.
Any ideas? Perhaps HJ would have more info, he keeps his ear to the ground.

I have sold a few Mitsubishi RVR SpaceRunner SportGear 4x4,sort of a cross between mini MPV and off road 4x4 with side sliding door, bull bars and spare wheel on the back door.Quite strange but good fun.
I have a new "51 reg" Astra SXI Turbodiesel in metallic black, Ive only done 5000 miles and already the leading edge of the bonnet is peppered with small stone chips, right through to the undercoat which is pale grey.
The car had to be repaired after a neighbour collided with the front wing one saturday morning, so I mentioned these stonechips to the dealer, asking the bodyshop to repair them whilst they had the car.
It lnow looks as though they have used a Black Marker pern to cover them !
Should the paint be so fragile ?
I would like them to repaint the bonnet, is this reasonable ?
I would welcome any advice or experience from other Vauxhall owners, I have been paying particular interest to other cars of a similar age in motorway rest areas etc. and not seen any as bad.

and I would suggest leaving a correct stopping distance from the car in front
Does anyone have a tape of last nights show that I could borrow or beg please.
Set the video up just didn't allow for one thing, kids watching flaming Steps video and not setting it all back correctly.
Thanks in advance,

you're right on the edge, aren't you ! I told you that the flu would stop your normal medication working. Dr. Klebb got rid of the shoes with the concealed blades ages ago, she uses the more modern approach of having them fixed in her bra.
Apparantly she uses a matching pair of battle swords - well that's what happens if you take steroids, I suppose.
Been asked to assist on a "stars and their cars" magazine, featuring flash motors, footballers, and scantily-clad women.
Because of the role-model status of these guys, I'm trying to set down some ground-rules for taking pictures - both hands on the wheel, seatbelts on, no elbows on the window sill etc.
anything else I should mention? Read more
dark classes must be worn at all times, day or night!
Also, mobile in right hand, left hand scratching around for a status-quo tape in the clove box, nees steering the car. All general, good driving form!
And, oh yes, Gary's releases are all up there in the news. Some amazing deals on new Picassos and Zafiras, and now nearly new cars too.
