Does anyone have any views - good or bad - on car supermarkets - I am looking at buying new Golf TDi at around £3K less than list from trade-sales, motorpoint etc...is it a risk, is it worth the risk Read more
Reflecting on some of the topics which have passed through this excellent forum I wonder what has gone wrong with this industry.
The petrol question for one - we've all got this the wrong way round. Surely the simple fact is that a maker who supplies vehicles which fail to operate properly on fuel supplied to the British Standard has got to mend his ways or suffer the consequences. It's simply unacceptable to be presented with vehicles whose engineers have failed to do their homework. I've never seen any hint of this issue raised abroad. It would be of value to learn which makers supply "delicate" engines and which supply more robust units.
The cambelt question for another. For heaven's sake, if a volume maker can't get right a simple thing like an idler why are they still in business? When you look at the machinery that was and is developed for Defence, would the Government accept engines that couldn't stay out of the workshop or that showed red lights when leaving the base. In its heyday the internal combustion engine was fearsomely intricate, think of a 48 cylinder radial aircraft unit, and had to be maintained in primitive conditions. They can get it right if they want to. Read more
Thanks Adam, I appreciate the explanation.
By the way, a colleaugue of yours up here in Cumbria has helped keep my old Cavalier and several other second cars on the road with regular servicing , I felt quite guilty when we bought an 18 month old diesel Sharan last year!

Must admit the Greek hire car guy caused a belly laugh in our house.
Faced with every complaint it was "this eez *NO* problem"..."this eez *NO* problem"
until he got "we'd like our money back" when it changed to
"this *EEZ* a problem" Priceless
was the AA inspector on the hire cars being a bit harsh in determining what was classed as "dangerous" as opposed to needed fixing?
Can anyone give me info regarding reliability of the zafira auto box and any fuel economy figures for the 1.8 auto.I would also like to know the manufacturer of the auto box. Read more
Who owns Aisin Warner?
I've forgotten.
A fully loaded Zaffy,1'8 petrol engine,and autobox?
Dont go there.
On long runs you'll hate it,specially with the aircon on,and a roofbox.
This vehicle needs all of the 2.2 diesel engine, and even then the 125 BHP is nothing like enough. But for some reason the might of GM cant come up with a manual box that can take the torque.........
No,I dont actually beleive that either.
Can anyone reccomend a quality, accessable DIY car book. Something that will explain how a car works, but will also help diagnose faults? Read more
I was flicking through the Haynes manual for a 80's polo / derby, they go into sooo much more detail than the modern Haynes manuals, very easy to read etc, get hold of one of these to learn the basics, CV joints, clutch plates etc dont chnage much!

I thought it was Boring Middleaged Winker or Buyers Mostly Winkers.
Or something similar!
I have to choose between either a Golf 100bhp TDi, a Seat Leon 110SE TDI, and a Volvo V40 1.9TD for a comnpany car. After driving them I am erring on the Volvo, but have heard unpleasant noises regarding the long term reliability of Mitsubishi parts.
The practicality of the Volvo is the main swaying factor, the Seat is the fun one, but long journeys might be tiring. The Golf runs out of puff past 80 mph....
Any comments?

Simon - That Alastair Campbell is a boy and a bit if he controls the No 10 car policy - as well as everything else!
Enjoy the SEAT.

Following on my previous posts about extras we didn't know we needed, and the hefty coverage of mobile/handbag theft etc in DT of late, I have to say that our Scenic has one feature which I think is a quite a good wheeze (sorry about that, HJ).
When you reach approx 5mph the doors lock automatically, only openable from the inside. Obviously a problem if someone needs to get you out in a hurry, but on balance ...?

I wonder if you could use minis for drag racing?
I want to fix the electric sun roof on my 95 Passat CL TDI, it does not operate at all. I can manually open it if I take away the cover panel and use an alan key, but there is no sign of power. Could it be fuses, or is it something more conspicuous? The operating switch still illuminates, but as I said there is simply no movement nor sound when I press it.
Any ideas?
