I have a 1991 pre-cat Toyota Carina 2.0 GLi Exec Auto with the 3SFE (Fuel injection) engine and 103,000 miles. I have had various intermittent cold starting and cold running problems which the family owned garage I normally use couldn't get to the bottom of and so I took it to my local main dealer for a diagnostic.
The code that came up was"28" which is an irrelevant code -- it shows there is a fault but it doesn't tell you what or where. The dealer did notice the CO% was very weak and adjusted the fuel mixture to the correct setting, thus correcting the CO% and curing the problem, albeit temporarily. For about 5 weeks, no problems but they came back with no obvious triggers.
I had it MOT'd today at my regular garage (it passed) and I asked the proprietor to look at my CO% reading to see if it had slipped from the correct setting -- it had, and is once more showing very weak.
These are my questions -- what is causing the fuel mixture to weaken of its own accord? Is it compensating for a problem elsewhere? Is there anything in the electronics that is giving the wrong information out to the engine management system? Has anybody out there seen this problem before?
Looks like I'll be going back to my main dealer again for more diagnostics -- specialist Toyota ones, my normal garage doesn't have the necessary programs. But it would be good to know roughly where to look. In all other respects the car is spendidly reliable, and I'd rather fix the old warhorse than p/x it for something newer and smarter.
Thanks for your feedback

Just saw this ad in Autotrader - I know QXs get poor reviews but this must be a great deal? I guess the 2.0 is likely to be a bit feeble but what do the members think?

Has anyone noticed one of those buzzers about in the shops that warns when you open the car door with the lights on? Tried Halfords and many other places locally but no joy.

I fitted a buzzer to my Polo (and to our Golfs before that). It's easy. Like Peter suggested, get a £1 buzzer and a 10p diode from Tandy. Run a wire from a front side-light through the bulkhead and connect the diode and buzzer in series to the wire which goes to the door switch. Make sure you get the diode the right way round so that the current flows from the side light to ground when the door is opened with the lights on.
Got a friend who has a low mileage TR6 (I think about 25k) that has been in his garage for 10-12 years. In order to get it up and running again what is the best course of action to go down - or should some pros come in. Also would it be worth doing up? Read more
I had a TR6 back in the 70's, until the rear chassis box sections rotted through. Easy to spot if you can get underneath.
Also had many problems with the fuel injection......it's a Lucas mechanical unit. Hate to think what it will be like if fuel has dried up in it.
Examples up to 1971 had 150bhp, later ones detuned to 125(?)bhp.
Great driver's car, even if it did handle like a plank.............
OK, I have have found a few cars at less than 1k and now need some input!!
1) Audi Metro 1.3L hatchback, 1989, 18,000 miles, MOT, taxed. Needs rear bumper. Was £600 but now the gear box has gone it is reduced to £400. Is it worth buying a car (however cheap) that needs work doing to it immediately.
Other cars I have seen and would really apprecaiate any advice are:
2) Citroen AX 1.1, 41,000 miles £595
3) Ford Sierra LX, 1990, MOT. £575
Rover Metro 1.1, 1993, reconditioned engine (worries me a little), new radiator. Tax and MOT. 82,000 miles. £549.
Any help anyone??!! Read more

Has anyone driven one of these? If so what do you think of them?
Cheers

Had a recent test drive in a CTR and used to own an Integra, so here's a quick comparison.
The CTR is quicker 95% of the time - the new i-vtec system really sorts out bottom end power, plus the transition at 5,700rpm or whatever is much smoother. It was a @!#$ in the Integra when and extra 70bhp kicked in like a light switch mid corner.
Integra limited to 9,000rpm - CTR 8,500.
Traction is better in the Intregra probably due to the limited slip diff which they skimped on for the CTR. But it does have a nice 6-spd box to make up for it.
The Integra must be the best handling FWD car ever.
But the CTR is so much easier to drive than the Integra which you have to grab by the scruff of the neck and show it who's the daddy. Maybe the ~64%/36% weight distribution f/r had something to do with it!
The CTR is a total bargain if you can ignore the cheese wedge looks.
A two or three year old Integra will be at least 12k - the Civic is only 14k imported, 15k brokers4cars or 16k at the dealers. Plus 1k for air-con of course!
Plus lovely 3 years warranty - thrash it and enjoy! Oh and don't change the oil every 3 nanoseconds.

OK, hands up if you know what the little stick thingie on the (usually) left of the stearing column, behind the round wheel bit, is for?
As a (very rough) guesstimate, I think about 60% of "drivers" do not know what it's for or how to use it, especially on round-a-bouts.
