Postings have appeared asking how to get rid of stale air-con smells and kill bacteria in the ventilation system. Our Japanese car accessory shop is the size of a medium supermarket and carries stuff you?ve never heard of (and frequently can?t read the instructions for). So I decided to see what they have. Sure enough they stock the ARS Car Fumigator (no tittering at the back please), made by The Earth Chemical Co. in Tokyo. It (and I quote) ?powerfully deodorises with microscopic particle tobacco smell filling the car, nuisance smell of airconditioner and smell of air-freshener stained in seats. Mildew and bacteria found in seats and mats and pipes are rooted up completely?.
It costs the equivalent of under six pounds and is a tin containing a chemical sachet and a perforated cover, just like a regular car freshener. The tin is filled with water, the sachet emptied therein, the ventilation system switched on in Recirc mode, doors closed and left for 10 minutes. Pungent smoke then fills the car, which disperses through the fan and pervades the vent system. When the doors are opened a lemon fragrance assails the olfactories.
I decided to try this on the Mazda hack, which hasn?t had its aircon touched in 7 years apart from the occasional burst of R-12 to top it up and lives in a tropical climate of high heat and humidity carrying all kinds of humanity on various errands. This existence had unsurprisingly conferred upon the interior something akin to the smell of the back of a Beirut taxi. The Fumigator worked fine, and now a week later the car still smells pleasantly fresh and lemony. Both our maid and driver are pleased, and that alone is worth 6 quid.
Maybe with the increasing usage and awareness of aircons in the West something like this product will show up in Halfords one day. In the meantime I have the manufacturer?s blurb and would be happy to fax this to anyone who wanted to obtain a supply or contact the factory to enquire about distributorship and score maybe a UK first! My email is growler@philippines.com.ph
The same store incidentally carries a Japanese paint proofing product specifically to repel bird poop and acid rain. I?ll try this and report. Read more
I have a 1.8 turbo rated at 180 bhp and 173 lbft when used with 98 ron petrol (super unleaded?).
A small power drop is promised with ordinary unleaded, do's any one know what the actual power and torque losses are.
I've enquired at the dealer and Audi customer relations but have got no sensible answers. I'm happy with the power i have but wonder weather the extra pull may be useful when towing the caravan. Read more

did you get the firestone F590's. If so what do you think of them

Must admit though, 6 Months ago if I had a pulling to the left or wanky steering wheel problem and someone told me to replace good tyres I would have thought they were trying to rip me off!

bought 2nd hand focus estate from garage. first time came to engage reverse it wouldnt. in fact it would only engage 1st and 2nd. garage have repaired it (they took it to specialist gearbox company - broken gear of some kind appaarently). now works fine BUT gears 3 and 4 are not in line. a small dogleg. so when changing down from 4th to 3rd you dont just push straight forward you have to push at an angle to take account of the dog leg. is this ok or do i need to ask the garage to look at it again? grateful for any advice. r Read more
Sounds like the selector mechanism needs adjustment - I would reject this car, what else might go wrong!

Having just taken my Accord in for its 18K service, I was very impressd by the standard of customer care (especially compared to the Vauxhall dealer that I took my last car to). I was given a free courtesy car (including petrol). My car was returned clean inside and out, and the entire service was followed up a couple of days later by a phone call. How many other dealers offer this level of service?

My local (independent) garage has just sold its hire fleet because of an insurance price hike. I daresay that insurers are having a hard time at the moment, but it seems unfair to target garages, who I imagine are better able to sort out minor damage without recourse to a claim than most.
What drama tonight!!! In tonights episode of salvage squad Jerry threw his dolly out of the pram and walked out.
However it was perhaps justified as it was a very important issue.
He was painting the wrong shape moustache on the nose of the gyrocraft.
The others objected on the principle that a restoration must folow the origional and Jerry was outvoted. Did I detect a directors hand in stage managing this or do the experts feel we were watching true life drama.

I watched a couple, but they seemed very stage-managed to me. For instance, I can't believe that an 'expert' would miss the fact that a Chieftain tank has 24V electrics! I think they are trying to cash in on the success of 'Scrapheap' which may have some appropriate scrap planted, but otherwise includes some genuine problem-solving. I like the girl in SS, but she's not enough to tempt me back...
I am trying to fit some front fogs to my 1995 (series 2) Espace. I need to get hold of a decent wirng diagram as the Haynes manual diagram shows totally different colours to my car ! Ideally I want to use the existing blank switch location which is normally used if the fog lamps are fitted as standard.
I am also trying to locate the likely location for the relay. Haynes simply says it is in the engine compartment, but there are 3- 4 possible locations.
Can anyone either advise me as to the location of the relay (when fitted as standard) and also where I might find a decent wiring diagram for the car e.g. alternative manuals to Haynes or possible websites would be welcome?
Of course I did try contacting Renault customer services but they simply suggested I contacted my local dealer. Unfortunately there is not a dealer within a 15 mile radius of where I live.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. Read more
If you promise to use them in foggy conditions only ;-)
The auto gearbox on our 93 Espace V6 has got stuck in 2nd gear twice now, both times on long motorway journeys. Each time, pulling in at the side of the road and turning off the engine briefly has solved the problem. The car has done 59k miles. I know Renault auto gearboxes have a habit of going wrong so is this a sign that the gear box will soon need a bit of work done on it
Any help or advice would be greatly apprecaited

That's probably the well known problem with the valve block of the autobox. Solenoids fail and seals give way.

I have an '87 325i SE Auto which should have a lot of life left in it at 97K, but it has had a series of intermittent electrical faults with engine management / ECU that hundreds of pounds at 'BMW Specialists' have failed to rectify. Does anyone know a good, honest, reputable garage / mechanic who could give the car a good looking over and do a full diagnostic test that I can rely on? Read more
There's a BMW agent listed in HJ Directory on the homepage
The Deadwood Stage is on the road again thanks to Mark, KB,Richard Hall, John S and Direct Line. Remember - the clutch had no effect. Progress report.
Your combined help enabled me to isolate the problem to a seized clutch, then the fun started. In the limited space available before I would have been completely blocking the A6, I kangarood about 15 metres to no effect, and was then reminded by my lovely wife that SHE pays Direct Line to solve such boring and mystical problems. I wasn't enjoying this at all, so took the advice.
Forty five minutes, five fags and coffees later, up came a lad I recognised in his big truck. Unlike me, he clearly loves such challenges, grabbed the keys to the van and juddered off. How he controlled it to join the main road without a clutch I do not know, but he disappeared for fully 15 minutes but returned with clutch and flywheel still happily joined together. That was Friday.
Just had a call to say he thinks the eventual saviour (banging it up and down every pothole having had no effect at all) was heat, generated by driving fast up and down the M6. His other tip was that if I will insist on not driving the van regularly I should weight the clutch down.
So there you are and thanks again.

Glad it's fixed. Must have been severely rusted up. Probably the recent wet weather was a factor.

Andy,
Personally, I love all those little horses, even with a 70 limit. I'm still missing the old S6!
What pisses me off is those little Aral stations in 'small town Germany' that still don't take credit cards - and I know Germans who think that the UK is a third world country!
