Reported today in the The Sunday Times Motoring Section:
New rules provide for a standard, mandatory font (typeface) to be used on all plates, new and OLD. Although the existing regulations stipulate the size and spacing of the figures, there has been no rule preventing the use of unusual fonts. FROM SATURDAY 1 ST SEPTEMBER 2001, if your number plate is not in the standard font (or something very similar) you risk prosecution.

A few weeks ago an acquaintance of an acquaintance had a fire with his car. As far as I know they have agreed to pay him out in total. This car is exceptionally rare and is salvageable. Is there any way I can find out what has happened to the car and if I can buy it directly from the insurance company before it's destroyed or auctioned off to philistines? Read more
Why not approach the former owner to see if he will approach the insurer to buy the car back. I've been able to do that in the past where the car was written off as uneconomical to repair.
My sister had an overheating problem with her car. She called the AA out and they got her going again. She assumed that the repair would last long enough to get her home, but within a few miles the engine began making odd noises. The car had to be towed to a local garage. The garage say that severe overheating has wrecked the engine, and that the AA repair was inadequate.
Does she have a claim against the AA for the cost of repairs that might not have been needed if they hadn't got her going again. Read more
Indeed
I was surprised at his effort hence my agreement with DL that he might be on a bonus for getting me mobile.
In all this fault occured 3 times on Vectra and twice it was towed in. The second time it happened the patrol man seemed very cagey about anything to do with electrics as he "didnt want to damage the ECU", which had been damaged the very first time this relay went. Which had in turn been damaged by a Vauxhall Trained Monkey, sorry, mechanic at a main dealers whilst in for a service.

I wonder if anyone can assist me, I drive a VW Golf (1.6 driver: 1991), when I get up to 50mph on the motorway the car starts to swerve and judder (as if caught in crosswinds). can anyone assist we the likely cause.
Does anyone know any VW independent specialist in the NW london area.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Read more
Sounds like it could knackered strut-top mountings that are causing the juddering- they can have an odd effect on the handling. If you replace them, use good quality VAG ones, the 16v ones are about 21.50 + VAT i think. Dont use pattern ones, they dont last.

I have looked at the site for the above outfit but cant find the grading of the cars. Which cars are the most reliable? I have looked at Top Gears JD Power survey, but they dont say how many cars were in each sample. If its only 50 then they dont have enough information to give a good statistical result. If MWDs results are on lots more cars them it will be far more reliable.
Thanks

I have just made a claim, for £120+, as part payment for a new inlet manifold(£300+ in total, 70% being paid for by Ford on a goodwill basis).
My claim has been approved, and am awaiting a cheque - watch this space.
I had paid out nearly £500, for 3yrs 'Platinum' cover (the most extensive AND exPensive) - seems quite good value, IF they pay up without problems!
Hi again folks,
Does anyone know of a rolling road setup in West Yorkshire where I can get my 2.5 Mondeo sorted out? The poor fueling is driving me crazy, when I take my foot of the go pedal it contiues to rev for about 5 seconds before slowly reducing to "normal".
Thanks in advance.

Spot on. the hanging up you are experiencing is normal and cannot be tweaked out. Is it really hanging up for 5 seconds?!? If so then that is excessive but the car will not return to a normal idle (8-900 rpm) until the vehicle is stationary. If the extended hang up is only at the kerbside, in neutral, then I wouldnt worry too much but if it is doing it while driving then some investigation is required.

Funny how a couple of centuries ago before the police service was established, Highwaymen would hide beside the road and rob passing stagecoaches, now we have a situation where the police hide beside the road and rob passing motorists..... Read more
It's become unbelievable on the A40 under and east of the Hanger Lane Gyratory. There have apparently been roadworks here for about a year, but I've never actually seen any road work. Nevertheless, the non road workers are orotected by a 30mph (yes 30mph) speed limit on this six lane dual carriageway. Not only that, the first speed cameras are sited immediately behind the totally unexpected 30mph signs. On Saturday there was absoultely no reason for thise speed limit at all. Not a soul around. And all cones, etc. completely cleared away from the westbound carriageway. Anyone who gets a postal ticket from this should take the case to court and attempt to argue that the imposition of this speed limit for no reason whatsoever was totally unreasonable and amounts to entrapment.

Hello
I have owned a couple of the current Td5 autos, and I would be lying if I said they had been at all reliable.
I won't bore you with the details, but on top of all the niggling faults I have endured, there are a couple of recurring problems on my latest one which the dealer has been unable to resolve for the last 18 months.
The first is a vibration when the vehicle is on the 'over-run' at around 1100rpm. It feels like a transmission problem because the engine does not do it when the vehicle is stationery. The main dealer has told me it was the ACE (anti-lean) hydraulic pipes resonating, but I've driven other ACE equipped models and some do have it, some don't. Last time I was at the dealers (-last week actually, L-R owners know their dealers well) the foreman mechanic rang up Land-Rover technical and they blamed the flexible joint at the exhaust manifold. I reckon this is unlikely because the problem disappears if the vehicle isn't moving.
The second problem I have is with Gearbox warning lights; they get flustered about once a month. The dealer has changed the switch and connectors on the auto box twice (blaming their premature corrosion on the A/C drain pipe's proximity) which improves, but never totally eradicates, the problem.
My reason for sharing this with you is in the hope that somebody else has both had the problem, has had it rectified (!), and can share the secret of their success with me.
PS: Whilst every L-R I have owned has been a dud in build quality terms, I am one of the 50% of L-R owners that are still going to buy another one. In many ways it is a cracking motor.
My wife drives a new Toyota 4x4 and whilst it is 100% reliable, there's something missing, I think it's character.

Lack of responses to your problem should indicate what poor vehicles Discos are. I am saddled with one too which has a mind of its own as to which problem it will next pose.
Landrover International Owner International Magazine (no connection) has a bevy of technical experts who may be able to assist. Try E mailing your problem to
margaret.way@emap.com.
Mad we must be for I too would look seriously at another L.R because of my size and arthritic knee but next time something thats been in the hands of a LR Fanatic as he may well have ironed out the majority of problems which L.R. do not seem to be interested in doing.

PS. What's the matter with Marmalade these days? Too runny and keeps dropping off my toast.......
Does a kit exist which heats your screen wash and/or nozzles in winter? My SAAB, which the ads tell me is designed for a Swedish winter, does not, nor is it an optional extra according to the dealer. I wonder how many crashes are caused by drivers with windscreens smeared with road salt. Any info welcome. Thanks Read more
I have just come across an outfit called www.vehvac.com, based in Edenbridge, who advertise a heated washer aftermarket system in Land Rover Owner Magazine......

But they would never make anything as ugly as this.
P155 OFF does exist - it was on Victor Meldrew's car in the last series.
