I'd be glad to provide a traffic offense admitting service at a charge of 20% of the fines for the service. I live in the Philippines. Anyone coming after me would be politely greeted by my body guard and given a guided tour of his Glock 9mm before being invited to return to the airport!
The worst driving I've encountered has to be 30ish year old blokes in the lumbering piles of junk like Fronteras, Mavricks and Terranos.
They are always tailgating some poor sod or trying a pointless overtaking manouever in a vehicle obviously designed to compensate for lack of personality / wedding tackle.
I was just on my way back to work from lunch. An old sierra behind me staying a reasonable distance as we drove through a 30 mph limit industrial estate, with lots of people wandering around getting their lunches etc. About a foot behind him is a Frontera. Anyway we all turn off the main road through the estate. At this point it's pretty obvious that you are going somewhere on the estate and will be stopping and turning off again. The Frontera driver decides to overtake the Sierra. However the Sierra driver wants to turn right into his works. Much squealing of tyres and honking of horns later the Sierra has turned off and Frontera man proceeds to race until he's a foot behind me. All I can see is the pedestrian killer bars in my rear view window... Luckily I can swoop away to the left as I enter my place of work. He speeds off - no doubt in a hurry to close some multi-billion pound deals or count paperclips.... I'm sure any accident would have been blamed on the Frontera drivers excessive speed but it would be missing the point. The guy is obviously a to**er.
I think the reality dawns on these people that they've bought 2 tons of a sick automotive joke, invented by a marketing team and cobbled together by half-arsed engineers to hit the forecourts quickly. They must get so little satisfaction from driving these trucks on the open road they need any opportunity to feel superior to other road users. Hence stupid overtaking and tailgating....
On a similar note - I saw the aftermath of a motorbike accident some months ago. Long clear 60 mph road with a roundabout offset to the right so 'straight-on' really is straight-on. Biker managed to hit the roundabout whilst trying to go straight-on and kill himself. The accident report was in the local papers on-line site yesterday. He was travelling at at-least 71mph and was double the drink drive limit. Accident blamed on his speed...... I've gone through this RAB (it's a well designed on that you can see over and observe all approach roads) at pretty high speed when the roads are very quiet. If a modern sports bike couldn't handle it at 71 mph then Honda engineers ought to be lined up and shot... Could the fact he was pissed have been the major factor? OK, so being pissed and hitting a sign at walking pace isn't going to kill you. But surely the coroner could see that his impaired judgement led to him doing that speed and aiming himself at a sign? Muppets....
Rant over, apologies to anyone who has the misfortune to own a Frontera...

which one of the stuart B's is the real one????
I get the impression that the new look Impreza is not as popular as the last one. Consequently a discount may not be out of the question - indeed I noticed that the dealer in Bristol was advertising new ones for £18.5k some £3k off list.

But of course you are.
I noticed a funny sound coming from my 1.8 Focus Saloon last week. When I took it into a Ford garage they said that it was the nearside rear wheelbearing that needed replacing. The impression I got from the garage was that this is not an uncommon repair that is needed. Does anyone know if this is a common fault or how long they should normally last ? The car has done 25,000 miles.
Thanks. Read more
I met one ford focus owner who had trouble with a rear wheel bearing. Ford dealer told him that it was due to all the wet weather we had last winter. This seems an iffy explanation to me as wheel bearings are supposed to have seals but he might have driven through flood water. The owner of the vehicle said the wheel came right off! Its not just the pedals that come off then! He said the focus is a great car. I'm tempted to buy one.
Travelling on our motorways I am struck by the frequency of skidmarks which veer quite violently (say 45 degrees or more) into the barrier or embankment.
A lot of people clearly leave the road, sometimes ending up quite high on the grass slope or through the hedging, with it seems, little warning.
Ok so the long straightish ones are from panicked tailgaters or where someone has pulled out carelessly, but the violent curvy ones, often with a spin involved?
Are these caused by tyre blowouts? Read more
Drivers fall asleep at the wheel or concentrate on their mobile phone call. You can see them a mile ahead on the motorway drifting out of lane. I usually see it when the road is fairly empty and driver loses concentration. Luckily all those I saw managed to recover when hitting the rumble strip!
Anyone know where I can get spare remotes for one of these? THe US supplier seems to have gone out of business. For those of you who don't know, the Auto Taser is an anti-theft device that clamps across the steering wheel. It contains a stun gun system powered by 3 PP3 batteries. It fits across the stereo area and when armed, emits a warning flasher light. On being disturbed, the TAser first emits an agonising shrill squeal then lightning flashes up and down the barrel. Anyone daft enough to touch it gets 50,000 volts non-lethal but enough to make him wonder why his arms and legs don't work.
I use it on My Harley Road-KIng as well as a look-but-don't-touch-device.
I love this device as you can imagine. Twice it must have given some so-called hardass a surprise or two when he smashed my window. Alas I dropped the remote down a drain and can't find another one. Why the manufacturer went out of business I can't imagine. THis was the best $299 + shipping I've ever spent on a car accessory. NO vehicle mods and guaranteed scary.
If anyone out there uses a Taser, has a spare remote, and is willing to partt with it I'd be glad to pay a good price. Read more
Why don't you just get your bodyguard to shoot them?
I've just received my Vectra back from the Garage after breaking down with what was initially diagnosed as a faulty Camshaft Sensor. I had just filled up at a Garage when the Engine Management System warning light came on and she just died. The eventual diagnosis was that I had a tankful of Petrol contaminated by water. This wasn't a back street garage, but one of the largest brands on a busy dual carriageway. Luckily it's a company car and Overdrive, the maintenance company, will be attempting to claim the cost back from the Garage - I wouldn't fancy my chances as a private driver trying to do the same. I haven't seen the final bill but the notes stretched to 2 pages and I'm sure I saw 33 in the unit labour column - I assume hours. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing before and what was the outcome with the garage?

I think you will find that the water in the fuel, of which there is some anyway, will naturally settle at the base of the tank.
At the site I work at we have a million litres of Heavy Fuel Oil in storage and also a similar quantity of LFO. The water eventually settles at the bottom and is drawn off each week into an oil/water interceptor. It is not there to leak first - it's just a pain.
I don't think the Environment Agency would like to hear that the refineries have water in their tanks - "just in case they leak" - it doesn't sound very reassuring.
I think I have read somewhere that there is a new standard voltage proposed for car electrical systems of 42V.
The reason being that cars have so much gubbins on them today, especially if you take into account new catalysts and kit to deal with particulates that 12V systems just will not be practical.
Was it a dream? Read more
If you find any of the recent articles about the new BMW 7 series then I believe that this is the first car to have such an electrical system.
Pathetic, isn't it.
I try so hard to be cool, it ought to be easier than this.
