Brian - I got tired of the Tories in the mid 90's, so I thought I'd give NewImprovedLabour a whirl..... well, they promised us that things would change!
Boy, were they right!
I went back to the Tories this time around, as they had their 'fair deal for the motorist' pledge. It included getting rid of the M4 bus lane (and any other blatantly stupid scheme), looking at some of the more rabid anti-car schemes and less tax on petrol. I liked some of their other (non motoring) ideas too. Alas, 'twas not to be.
Maybe next time, with the help of 25 million drivers....?
Can anyone explain to me why Engine Oil is cheaper in France? I've just returned from a days shopping in Calais and got 2-stroke oil for less than half the UK price. I'm not talking about unknown brands but Castrol fully synthetic TTS - about a tenner a litre over here, cost me a fiver for 1.2 litres. They also stocked the range of Shell Helix Engine oil and that looked about half price as well.
I'd been advised that the supermarkets are cheaper than Bike shops for the 2-stroke but it can't be purely down to economies of scale - the larger Tescos sell oil but it seems about the same price as elsewhere.
If anyones interested it was the Auchan supermarket in Calais I used and Washing and Dishwasher powder is also around half the UK price!

Simon,
yes someone did say it was cheaper in Costco.
They do have a web site by the way. The shop is near Pride Park.
However someone also said you have to pay to be a member and the price was very high and is also annual I believe.

I must ask the Agha Khan about all this the next time he pops in for a drink...
my mum runs a car boot sale in the north east of england, and it is amazing the bargains you can get, haynes manuals are about £1 each, and today i saw two front spot lights in the box for £2, so if anybody off the honest john forum wants to come to the INDOOR car boot, the offer is instead of the normal 50p you can get in for 30p. the place also has a nice little cafe inside. Dave, who do you think the Ford dealers will get in to do your dent?
The good SMART repairers will make a 100% perfect job of your dent, so long as the paint is undamaged. Give Dents Plus a ring (0800 975 4434, a mention of my name, Phil Goodacre of Autorenew, would be appreciated) and I can vouch for the quality of their repairs. We use them all the time, including dents on our own cars. Best repair for us, to date, was the removal of a dome on the lid of a Porsche Boxster. Dealer said new bonnet, we said no problem. Client is delighted and having seen the result I am not surprised. No sign of the original damage and all done from the painted side of the panel. Go for it.
Gentlemen - your attention please. Clear your minds of Speed Cameras, Limits,VW's and other inconsequental things and address your minds to my problem.
I have, which apart from an excellent driving position and ease of entry for an 18 stone, 6ft 2" person with athritic left knee, what must be one of Britains poorest made vehicles - a 1986 Landrover Discovery.
As a result of a flat battery in Nov 98 Garage diagnosed a faulty alternator and replaced. This did no good and in Jan 99 had to buy a HD Battery. Feb 01 battery again flat and would not hold charge. Auto Electricians checked vehicle electrical equipment and said they detected no unusual leakage while vehicle was parked. Diagnosed a duff battery so another Bosch HD battery fitted. Now find battery flat again.I do about 60- 100 miles a week and vehicle unused for 3- 4 days when I find the problem of lack of power to start.
Seems to me either (1) Power seeping from vehicle somewhere whilst stood - but see what Auto Lec told me above, OR (2) I am not doing sufficient mileage
to replace the energy lost through heating the glow plugs (diesel) and cranking the engine to start - just how long does it take to replace this power?
Your suggestions as to how to cure the problem would be appreciated. No comments needed on the quality of Landrovers please. Read more
I agree with David on all his points particularly the charge rate.
Before the days of alternators we had a problem with an HGV which was doing The same as yours but even worse.
This was an HGV and would not start even after a long run.
Replaced the cut out regulator. still the same.
Fitted new batteries. Still no joy.
Replaced the dynamo.
Wouldn't start next morning after a 150 mile journey.
Called at Lucas in Derby on the way home.
He simply checked the number on the cut out regulator box. Consulted his little reference book.
Walked into the stores and came out with a new one and fitted.
You were one number out he said on the cutout regulator, it was saying stop charging when the batteries were still only partly charged.
It would have been cheaper to have gone there in the first place.
I believe this is now built into the alternator but must be a similar piece of gubbins.

Just read the item in the news section about the demise of Top Gear. I think I have said before that I regard one of my claims to fame as having once co-written an article with Quentin Willson, we were both contributors to Buying Cars magazine at the time.
I was in touch with Quentin at one stage about some Top Gear programming ideas with a strong consumer/financial theme, however the verdict was that the
commissioning editors wouldn?t consider anything without a ?wow! factor? - perhaps they mis-judged the viewing public and content with a bit more substance was required. Read more

any pro motoring programme on any channel has to be good news;
all the clowns asked to present are down to personal taste as to whether they are liked or not.
The same goes for article content whilst some will wet their pants if they see an EVO doing doughnuts others will write to the editor.
Similarly articles about buying a cheap Volvo and running to Glasgow and selling it for less than its purchase price and the petrol will send others to sleep.
Clarkson for all his faults did establish motoring as an interesting subject on TV; better than some old f*rt wittering on about the flat four engine in their Jowett Javelin and how they have'nt seen a Vauxall Wyvern for years.

Travelled up today to Ipswich. Kept coming across flocks of these mobile road blocks. What will it be like next week coming up to the Bank Holiday? Read more
I tow a trailer tent - not a huge air brake when traveling, no problem keeping up and can over take lorries on steep bits of A303 no problem. When we arrive we never cook just eat out (ie spend lots of money locally) and with a tent there's nothing hard for someone 6'4" to bang his head on. Cost a couple hundred quid secnod hand so not some vast expense and even gets used for more than 2 weeks in a year.

(though 500 or 600 bar does give one pause for thought....)
I recon we should all plant a tree infront of a camera, is that illegal?
After all, we would be doing our bit for the enviroment, nice big conifer, wonderful.
Besides, if they put speed cameras behind signs/bushes/hedges/whatever, we would only be doing what they are?
Worth a trip to Homebase, how much would it save you, if you planted it by your most passed s.c?
