I have just had my engine overhauled by Lancasters of Ipswich. What mileage can I expect before the next major overhaul? Read more
Further to my last post.....
I have changed the spark plugs, to slightly hotter ones, still NGK though.
This will hopefully stop the misfiring which I now suspect was causing the juddering.
It also revealed that in 1 of the back 3 cylinders some oil was leaking into the plug and cylinder area. This was probably a fundamental cause of the mis.
So, next question.
It is likely that this will require some attention. After speaking to my friendly mechanic, it looks as though it could be either a replacement rocker cover or a cylinder head gasket. Are there any alternatives to this walletectomy?
Lets pray that the new plugs solve this issue.

The reason we suspect that oil is getting to the plug is that when we channged it, it was dripping with oil. The plug itself wasnt any more black than the others.
I should probably take it to Mazda and get them to plug into their diagnistic comp.
I have also tried STP complete engine cleaner (i think thats what it is called). This should also help to clean the valves etc, which may improve the problem.#

My brother's low mileage (48K) 1988 Micra has started bellowing thick bluish smoke from the exhaust over the last couple of weeks but otherwise runs ok.
I did a compression test yesterday and No.1 cylinder was 10 psi down on the others. Suspecting either bore damage or valve stem oil seal problems I removed the cylinder head. No.1 piston was totally clean and carbon free whilst the other 3 pistons showed the expected build up.
What could explain this and the smoking? I can see no bore scoring or unusual wear and the valves all look ok (although I haven't yet removed them). Could valve stem seals fail in such a short space of time - but that wouldn't explain the clean piston.
Any ideas would be welcome. Read more

My immediate thoughts regarding a clean piston were that there was a coolant leak into that cylinder. Can't think of anything else that would give the effect. It's ben going on for a while though if it's really clean.

I keep hearing that my R reg Megane Auto could be prone to box failure.
Has anyone out there ever experienced this, and what are the first symptoms?
Acquired it in March 01 with only 8k on the clock, but have put another 5k on iit since, in an effort to loosen things up.

I had a Renault Scenic 1.6 RT auto that the gearbox failed on after 35000 miles, 2 and a half years.
As it was on Motability Contract Hire, the bill was down to the dealer, who in turn claimed the £4000 (from memory) cost from Renault UK.
HOWEVER..............the car drove 100 times better after the new gearbox, used less fuel and changed gear a lot smoother. When I looked under the bonnet there appeared to be a lot of new items, relay boxes etc................
Upon asking the Renault dealer I was told " we have never seen this before " and " all we did was swap the gearbox ".............................................A likely story.
Needless to say that, along with regular breakdowns, excessive tyre wear, extremely poor dealer service I havent bought (NOR WOULD EVER BUY OR RECOMMEND ANYONE ELSE DOES) a Renault again. And the car that ive just told you about, that was actually a replacement after the first car broke down 4 times in 3 months, being off the road for half of that time!
Aaaaaargh!
Some time ago my 230TE backfired and would start but not run, I managed to find a mechanic who fixed this fault for an outstanding 40 quid...
It's done it again and my clever mb man has gone to greener fields..however he said it was caused by a float in the plenum chamber becoming stuck as a result of the backfire...now I'm quite clever mechanically, but I don't know where to look and my library doesn't have any manuals later than '84.
Any advice gratefully recieved

Thanks Adam...it was the metering pintle...with ignition on to provide fuel press...a light tap was dished out and wallah..heard it click inside and it fired up first time...I owe you one...Thanks a lot...

I have a Cavalier convertible which I bought for a song earlier in the year when the weather wasn't so good, and it's really come into its own this last few weeks. Except for one annoying fault that's developed recently...
At idle, with the clutch pedal fully depressed, there's a fairly loud squealing noise, which remains constant whether in gear or in neutral. It quietens down when the pedal is released, but is still just about audible. But if I hook my foot under the pedal and lift it up slightly, the noise stops altogether.
Other than that, the car drives fine - the clutch isn't slipping, and gearchanges are smooth.
Any ideas, folks? Is the clutch on its way out, does it just need adjusting, or is it more likely to be an internal gearbox fault? Read more
Thanks all - after several weeks of the clutch making this noise but not getting any worse, I came off the motorway after a longish drive this morning and the screeching was ear-splitting, so it looks like your advice came just in time. Have booked it in to have a new clutch fitted tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Ian.
Has anyone had their car paintwork repaired by 'Chips Away' (or by any similar company) recently?
I've got a badly scuffed door mirror (flaked a bit and cracked on the paint) and thought it might be a cheaper option than resparaying it professionally. Read more
Wish mine were! I'd overlook the odd blemish.

All VW passats from 96 to july this year,A4s from 94,A6s from97 ans seat leons have faulty front lower wishbones.recall announced in Auto Bild this weekend. The ball joint can fail and the the two other flex connection can fail .It is the long arm that goes from the bottom of the front hub to the body Read more
Have two A4s.
The newer one - Avant Tdi 1998 - has had both lower front arms and balljoints changed at 68,000 miles by non franchised dealer. (Franchised dealer cost would have been £1,100) Symptons were a continuous creaking noise at low speeds.
The older one - 2.6 Quattro 1995 - has now done 108,500 miles without a single creak, despite living a very hard life here in London.
This car needs a new evaporator for the leaking A/C. Dealer quotes £1,300 + v.a.t.
Any ideas ??

The vehicle I am interested in has no V5. The current owner says he bought it at auction as it was being sold by a finance company (a re-po). It has been HPI'd and has come up clean. Is it straightforward to get a V5 or should I be aware of other problems? Advice please. Read more
The trader can get a V5 by using a V62 to transfer ownership to him. But it will take some time and he probably want to offload the car, take a profit, and plough it into something else. If I was you I'd get details of the lot number and check with the auction house and finance company which sold the car.

Hi Roy,
Try putting the adress in at the top of your web browser it should come up. www.mercedesservicing.com
Any way your vehicle is a 123 280 around 1979/80, if the dealers have done a complete overhaul, then you should get the same out of it again. One of the things I would check is that they have fitted running in oil. If they havn't you will get oil consumption problems again. If they fitted mobil 1 or some sort of equivalent. Then the oil is too good for initial use. ie first 1000-1500mls. Check it out. If it isnt fitted then get if fitted. If they say there no need then get them to put it in writing. If the engine is a brand new one from MB, it will more than likely come filled with oil.
Hope I have been of some help.
Regards
Andy
