MINI introduces all-new Roadster

MINI has announced the Roadster, a two seat soft-top version of the new Coupe. It’s the sixth model in the MINI line up. First deliveries are expected in Spring 2012, with prices from £18,015 for the entry level 122hp Cooper Roadster.

The fabric folding roof operates semi-automatically and folds quickly into the area behind the seats without seriously affecting luggage capacity, which is 240 litres. The dimensions of the Roadster are similar to those of the current MINI Convertible, but the two seat layout gives the car a longer, sleeker silhouette.

The interior features the trademark oversized speedometer, toggle switches and rev-counter behind the steering wheel. Sports seats with improved lateral support are standard in all but the basic Cooper model. All models come with electric door mirrors, parking sensors, air conditioning, DAB radio, AUX-in and a host of safety systems including roll-over bars.

A host of optional extras will be available including a MINI Connected, which adds access to Facebook, Twitter and various other webs services. Details of further standard and optional equipment will be announced nearer to launch.

The range features four models – Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper SD and John Cooper Works. The SD is fitted with a 2.0-litre diesel engine while the rest of the range comes with 1.6-litre petrol engines in various states of tune. See the table below for details.

The reasonable fuel economy figures are helped by the installation of brake energy recuperation technology, as well as a stop start system, electric power steering and shift indicator.

Thanks to the lightweight canvas roof the MINI Roadster’s centre of gravity is lower than other MINI models, which, along with a stiffened body, should provide traditionally entertaining MINI handling characteristics.

Various electronic aids help towards improving the MINI Roadster’s handling, too including Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist.

The Roadster model joins the Hatch, Convertible, Clubman, Countryman and Coupe, and goes on sale in Spring next year.
