Your guide to the best 2020 UK scrappage schemes

Published 09 October 2020

If you want a new car, and have an old car to trade-in, the following scrappage deals could save you up to £5000 - with popular models like the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i30, Renault Captur and Kia Picanto all available with significant discounts.

In 2009, the Government introduced a scrappage scheme to encourage the sale of new cars by providing a £2000 incentive if you scrapped your old car. The aim was to increase new car sales and get more clean, less polluting cars onto UK roads.

With the increase of car bans in city centres across the UK, and the 2035 ban on the sale of petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, the Government is now looking to introduce an scrappage scheme centred on electric vehicles. But, until then, manufacturers are offering their own schemes.

Whether the car you want to trade in qualifies for a scrappage scheme depends on its age and how long you have owned it. These are the criteria.

Scrappage scheme Must be registered before Owned for minimum of
Citroen 1 January 2014 90 days
Dacia 1 April 2014 90 days
Hyundai 1 July 2012 90 days
Kia 1 July 2013 90 days
Lexus 1 October 2012 6 months
Mazda 31 December 2011 60 days
Renault 31 March 2014 90 days
Toyota 30 September 2012 6 months

How much can you save on a scrappage scheme?

The amount you can save depends on the particular manufacturer scheme and the model you are buying. One of the best savings is £5000 off a new Hyundai Santa Fe. Other big savings include £4000 off a Citroen C4 Cactus and £4000 of a Mazda CX-5.

The scrappage scheme appears at first glance to be ok,but where do most people have the other £18k to buy a new one. The most I could scrape together is £6k as I have no intention in buying a 2nd hand or new electric car so it will be petrol for me.

With a petrol I can get to Essex where my daughter lives on half a tank of fuel, with an electric car I would have to stop and charge so making my journey time that much longer and I would not be able to have a full size spare wheel in the boot, which I have at the moment.

michael davidson    on 16 June 2020

the government would do far better with our money in getting the infrastructure sorted ,rather than allowing the manufacturers to increase their prices

Justy    on 16 June 2020

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is excluded !, what is the point, i can get an HIlux and £4000 off though, which must very good for the planet.

Falkirk Bairn    on 11 October 2020

If money is burning a hole in your pocket LOOK for cars where there is a new model and look for a deal on the outgoing model.

The outgoing range may have a special edition model, it may be offered with 30%+ off the list price - a lot better than £3,000-£5,000 off. Manufacturers have different attitudes - some want to clear the decks and discount heavily and market the new model - others will try various different policies - deposit incentives, 0%, payment holidays ................. you have to write down the offers and work out which one suits your use & your budget.

e.g Clearance Volvo S60 petrol, 4 door, 250BHP, auto, leather, lots of toys £25K-£27K - about the same a Ford Focus 1.5 Titanium list at about £28K
The Volvo will be a lot more expensive to insure, fuel & service
