Are my insurer allowed to refuse my policy renewal because of my age?

Hastings won't renew my policy as I'm now 88 years old. I've been with them since 2011, but this year they've written to me and just said they won't renew. I have had no accidents or convictions since I started driving when I was 17. Is this fair?

No, it's age discrimination. Unfortunately they can refuse to quote and there is not much you can do other than complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Technically, the insurer have done nothing wrong, so the FOS will not find in your favour.
I would suggest writing to your MP about it and ask him to raise with Treasury, ask for them to take up with the Financial Conduct Authority. Advise it is breaching the Equality Act and EU Legislation.
