Why is the insurance on my old car so high?

I've a 2004 Suzuki Alto and the insurance quotes are insane. Seven times what I paid for the car. I've been driving 11 years with no claims or convictions, although I haven't got any No Claims Bonus because, for the last three years, I've driven hire cars.

When you insure a car, the primary factor is the risk you present. The fact you haven't got any NCB is the reason the premium is so high. This is the reason why young drivers have the same issue that you're experiencing.
