Are petrols going to have better used values than diesels?

I am currently getting PCP quotes for a new XC90. I was torn between the D5 and the T5, but the quotes have pretty much made my mind up. The list price for a D5 Momentum is £550 more than the new T5, yet the three year Guaranteed Future Value for the T5 is £2500 more than the D5 - the £3k difference resulting in approx £80-90 a month more per month for the D5 over the T5. I was wondering if this is an emerging trend i.e residuals on petrols being stronger than diesels, or whether it's just that Volvo are trying to shift some more petrol models on finance?

Volvo is one of a number of manufacturers openly trying to move away from diesel engines in favour of petrol hybrids, so it's no surprise to hear that there are better deals available on the XC90 T5 over the D5. Combine this with uncertainty around the future of diesel resulting in lower residual values, and it could make a lot of sense to opt for a petrol XC90 on PCP. Having said that, if you cover a lot of miles, don't dismiss the D5 straight away.
