  • Sofa so good! 13 Aug 2004 (Forum)
How he ever got to Dover without the lot ending up on his bonnet I don't know. Did he get far in France I wonder? Anyway - any views on a sofa please.
  • Polo Mk5: lights for continental driving 23 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I recently took my 2002 Polo (1.2 E 65) to France on holiday. Before going, I asked my VW dealer about headlamp converters (the handbook says consult your dealer). They duly ordered me a conversion kit (about £10) and fitted it (about £15). The kit turns out to be two small strips of adhesive tape, and apparently an adjustment to the lights was also necessary.
  • More ammo for HJ 21 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Knowing HJs opinion of Renault, I think he might enjoy this little tale. Just returned from holiday in France (you know, those people who love the British so much). Rented a Laguna - having asked for a Vectra. Nice car but whilst there I managed to achieve a blow out on a front tyre (don't ask). No problem, thought I, there's a full size spare, and the car has only done 3k kms.
  • Dacia Duster 1.5 diesel 4x4 - New Dacia Duster 1.5 diesel 4x4 -first impressions 1 Mar 2022 (Forum)
New Dacia Duster  II 1.5 DCi Blue 4x4 Prestige to replace our old L200 bought from an online agency in France as no dealer stock available in our region. Allegedly an 01/01/2022 pre- reg car that was manufactured in October 21 by the VIN and turned out to have never been registered in France so may have come from either Germany or Czechoslovakia, and it's first French reg is with us.
  • SAAB 9-5 (1997 - 2009) - 03 2.3 Loose wheel nuts 28 Jul 2009 (Forum)
John I had a disturbing experience of wheel nuts coming loose at start of my journey through France earlier this month July 2009. After 2 nights stay near Paris I continued my journey south, and after about 15kms I started to notice regular knocking sound from the rear left side of the car. I decided to come off the motorway at the next junction and found a nearby supermarket carpark to drive around and inspect wheels & underside of the car.
  • Autotrader Scam ??! 9 Apr 2009 (Forum)
The car is located in Birmingham locked in my garage and will come with full service history. The price that I'm asking for the car is 2,000 £. Now I'm in France because I just opened a store in my home city Bordeaux / France and I need a car here. I already found one here but I need to sell my car from UK first. I want to make sure that you really intend to buy my car because I will fly to Birmingham only if I am sure I am dealing with a serious buyer with cash money available.
  • Nissan Qashqai - Qashqai Noise 9 Mar 2024 (Forum)
Naturally it's difficult to replicate this with a mechanic in the car due to its sporadic appearance. We're due to drive to France in a month and I don't want the anxiety of the noise returning.  My wife thinks we should get both the bearings and brakes replaced but I'd hate to spend hundreds of pounds unnecessarily.
  • Nissan 100NX 2.0 litre GTI (1992) - Nissan 100NX brake compensator valve EPDM seals 23 May 2022 (Forum)
Nissan do not supply these parts any more (and even when they did, they cost more than £1000 each !). I can't find any valve assemblies in the UK, France, Germany, Austria. Switzerland, etc..... :-(   Consequently (unless anyone can propse me 2 (left and right brake compensatir valves), I have stropped them down and found that there are 3 seals per unit.

  • New cars - 'infotainment' screens 20 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I often use it even locally to remind me of speed. I just returned from a 2400 mile trip to Andorra, Begium and France, much on small country roads and it worked just fine, allowing me to keep my eyes mainly on the road, watch for signs, etc. In modern cars, the screens seem to be set low in the fascia and it appears to me that the driver has to look down to change settings, follow the satnav, etc.
  • Budget camper van or similar 14 Aug 2017 (Forum)
One thing I've always wanted to do is a sort of minimalist touring in Europe, having spent many a great holiday in Spain/France. I've seen many folk over there on campsites with a budget /minimalist van conversion. This really appeals to me, the sort of thing I'm thinking of is a Berlingo/Partner/Kangoo size thing. The VW Transporter seems to be the default choice, nice size but a bit pricy.
  • Vauxhall Astra J 1.7 cdti ecoflex - Dreadful fuel economy 4 Jun 2015 (Forum)
It has the right Michelin energy tyres inflated to higher pressures, driving speed just the same , ie 130kph (80mph) most of the way there once in France, and motorway 210 miles to Dover. The only difference is I used cruise control quite a lot, and the old 1.3 did fail to maintain 130kph up some of the steeper inclines. I have phoned local Vauxhall dealer to see if there is a software update, and they say no.
  • N/A - Old chestnut again - which camera warning system. 30 Apr 2014 (Forum)
http://www.coyotesystems.co.uk/en/faq-1/getting-the-best-from-coyote It seems to originate from France, which is where I live. Life on the road over here could shortly get very tedious and expensive as the m****s in charge of road safety here (they call themselves experts) are very likely going to reduce the maximum speed limit on all two lane roads from 90 kmph to 80 kph, thats about 49 mph.
  • Nissan X trial Aventura DCI 2008 - Timing chain 15 Aug 2013 (Forum)
My car broke down in France recently and the garage says its the timing chain. They now want about 600 euro to strip down the engine to see how damaged it is. The engine died without drama going a short incline.
  • Toyota Avensis, Hyundai i30? - Advice, family car with big boot 6 Jan 2013 (Forum)
We need more boot space and general space in the car, plus fancy something newer, especially as we travel to visit family on round 250mile trips a few times a year and want to go camping in France this summer, with all our camping gear. Realise we will still use the roof box for holidays. What would you suggest on a budget of £7k? We want this car for the next 5 years at least. And something economical.

  • Vauxhall Astra H - Compensation for breakdown within six months of pu 20 Jun 2010 (Forum)
In February, I bought my son an 06 registered Astra 1.9CDTi 16v SRi from a local garage.  Earlier today, he went on holiday in it to France, and on the way broke down on the French motorway system.  He called out a local breakdown garage and was towed to their premises where a faulty alternator was diagnosed.  It will take until Thursday for them to obtain and fit a new one.
  • How long does it take to transfer a registration 9 May 2009 (Forum)
Just a quick query. I'm still trying to buy something nice in the UK to bring back to France as a weekend toy. I've found a really nice example of what I'm looking for just up the road from family members in Yorkshire and my brother-in-law, with whom I've stolen a few horses in my motoring past, has been for a look and says it's the one.
  • First World War Cemetery- where was it? 31 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I can`t remember the place but would like to return, but I can describe it. 1986, travelling on ordinary roads heading up from the South of France and I think within a hundred miles of Calais. Motorway was to our right, North east and parallel almost to my line of travel. Needed a bank and turned left for a couple of miles to a very small town.
  • Audi A4 B6 (2001 - 2005) - 04 1.9TDi Central Locking / Alarm problem 26 Nov 2008 (Forum)
So far so good, but this is now the only way to both lock and then get in to the car and it's been a pain for two weeks in France. My handbook tells me nothing about re-setting things. Is it a fault or can I reset it by holding the key in the ignition in a certain place for a certain time? Or maybe something similar.
