  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 97 1.8 petrol (?) Stalling engine & ign. light. 17 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I've not had it long but a friend helped me to find it and has serviced it just after i got it with all the usual stuff being checked or changed. I know that the radiator has been changed, oil, brakes and discs and lots of other bits too. The car after i have driven about 20miles then park and then get back in just after i have started driving again ( i basically drive from work to parents house, pick up son then drive home again) i normally pull into the same road (my parents road) and reverse out.
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 04 1.4s - PO300 ECU code - sluggish, loss of power 27 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The Sale of Goods Act covers me for up to 6 years with any inherent fault. For example, I'd expect a car's coil pack and ECU to last beyond 36 months. Tyres, brake pads, wipers etc I would expect to replace but not these things. Also, if the company refuses to help, can I pay to fix it yet still begin a legal dispute to get that money back? Or must I not have the car fixed until there is an agreement?
  • Subaru Impreza III (2008 -) - 1000+km in new Impreza 22 Oct 2007 (Forum)
If you switch the ESP off then the car feels decidedly light at the back end and does not inspire confidence in fast curves. Brakes are much as per the current model and fine. Overall its a car that the Focus/Mazda3/Astra driver will be more than happy with. IMHO it lacks the interactivity of the current ('old') version and does not feel as fluid on a winding road.
  • Traffic flow vs. speed limit 14 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I understand that the theory is that although obviously cars are travelling faster at NSL, due to the effects of braking, distance between vehicles, etc., you can end up getting MORE traffic flowing through at a LOWER speed limit. However, when driving through, traffic flows well at 60 and somewhat well at 50, and becomes stop-start at 40mph.
  • Dodgy VW Passat service-power loss 25 May 2007 (Forum)
I took it in to a local garage that specialised in VW's for the service. It was a normal service plus the replacement of all the brake pads - £370. I was also informed that the cam belt was starting to crack up an should be replaced in the very near future. When I drove the car after picking it up, it was totally different with a complete loss of power.
  • Selling cars privately, don't be sloppy. 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
As he entered the village (and I was 50 yards from drop off) he slowed to about 20mph as there was a T junction ahead. He then braked further as there was traffic coming. EXCEPT he hit the wrong pedal and floored it. The good old 2.5 TDi leapt into life and we accelerated to about 30+ mph 'head on' straight into the brick wall of a pub.
  • MOT Testers and wheel bearing play 29 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I'm talking about common adjustable taper bearings .Not many people seem to know that there should be a noticeable amount of play in a properly adjusted wheel hub as this allows for expansion of parts due to heat transferred from brake components. I have an engineering background and have been working on mine and others cars for over 25 years and have several times come up against testers who insist that wheel bearings that are properly adjusted are too slack.
  • SAAB 9-5 Aero reverse gear baulks 22 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Despite matey blowing the SAAB's horn long and loud, all the time trying and failing to select reverse gear himself (we had no one behind), she kept on coming. From a car's length to nothing, BANG. With clutch depressed and brakes released to try and lessen damage, the walking speed impact still resulted in one cracked front bumper and a large hole courtesy of towbar... No apparent damage to the V70 - even to floor pan - beyond some of the SAAB's number plate reflective film on the tow ball cover.
  • Nearly killed a child last night 20 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Literally, just as I approached them, from within their midst, a toddler ran out, straight off the kerb and half way into my lane. I stamped on the brakes and swerved to avoid him. I ended up with my front on my side of the road and rear across the white lines. The toddler was frozen with fear and was still standing a good couple of yards into the road.
  • Yet another insurance claim question 15 Jun 2004 (Forum)
No comments about the speed they were travelling at please. Haven\'t a clue why P had to pump the brakes given the car has ABS. Perhaps his own doesn\'t. You wouldn\'t believe from her grammar (I cut and pasted) that she is an author! Apologies if the codes I have used to make the text bold are wrong!!
  • Escort Auto Problems 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I\'ve seen another post here that indicates this sound could be down to worn engine mountings, but the sound doesn\'t occur when stationary and straining against the brakes. Any thoughts on this would be very welcome as I\'d like to get it sorted out while still under warranty (and before my girlfriend gets so wound up at the sound that she drives the thing off a cliff!)
  • Very cheap car suggestions 8 Feb 2003 (Forum)
The last two cars she's had have been Volvo 340s. The first, an F-plate 1.7, cost £300 privately and lasted a year before failing MOT on rust and brakes. The second (and current) one is a 1.4 on an H-plate, cost £200 from a dodgy dealer, looks very presentable from a distance but overheats, refuses to start now and then, and the MOT is due at the end of the month.

  • Old car paranoia 24 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Apparently, more than 20m French cars built before January 1997 could be effectively taken off the road unless they are shown to meet regulations on asbestos-free brake, clutch and exhaust components. The regulations come into force in the New Year and could mean an inspection of all such components before a pre-97 vehicle can be sold by existing owners or even dealers.
  • Lost Wheel Saga 29 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Yet, because the threads had not been cleaned and oiled, so much of the torque was lost in overcoming the friction due to the crap in the threads, that there was insufficient clamping pressure to hold the wheel still under braking and cornering. Wheel shuffle resulted thus wearing the studs and hence a lost wheel when sufficient of the studs had stretched and fractured. Fortunately it was a single vehicle accident, no injuries involved.

  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - Grand Scenic - 1 yr / 16,000 mile report. 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Controls and suspension are optimised for comfort and ease of operation rather than feel (numb electric PAS and well overservoed brakes, for example), but in the context of this kind of car it's fine. Inside, there's plenty of space, huge versatility with its three independently sliding / tumbling / removable rear seats, and the two "jump seats" which fold out of the boot floor, and which are provided with proper 3 point safety belts.
  • C4 Picasso 6 Apr 2007 (Forum)
But it is more noticeable when slowing down as you get a nudge in the back as it drops down through each gear as you slow down, not too much of a problem but many may find it annoying if not used to it. Whilst on the subject of slowing down, the brakes are typical Citroen, i.e. very good, with little pressure needed to enable you to come to a very abrupt halt!!!! The gears can be used in fully auto mode or in manual mode, where you can use the padels to change up and down ?
  • Toyota Yaris - Replacement car for daughter 25 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Our daughter now has the Yaris we bought new 16 years ago. The last MOT had advisories for corrosion on the sills and subframe, imbalance of brakes and several other things. She has no off road parking and maintenance is not a word she is familiar with, hence the vehicle is pretty unloved and looks battered to say the least. The plan was to run it until such time as it became uneconomic.
