  • Passat/Golf/Octavia - Used car for around £3k 24 Feb 2015 (Forum)
There are few passats with around 110k-130k miles on the clock - I wonder whether this is when Volks will start to brake. Alternatively, there is an Octavia 2.0TDI with only 80k on the clock, but it has got a DSG, which I am worried about. It's meant to be great, but when breaks down it costs a fortune to repair/replace.
  • Peugeot 207 - Any mechanics in Scotland looking for trainee? 13 May 2014 (Forum)
I have a mechanical aptitude and have been self taught to some extent and have undertook jobs such as replacing wishbones, driveshaft, hub swivel pin's, suspension mounts, engine mounts, steering wheel, brakes & servicing. I also own Peugeot/Citroen dealer level diagnostic equipment which have helped me diagnose central locking problems, airbag faults and air flow faults. I am also working on old outboard engines as a hobby where I have rebuilt carburettors, installed new coils points & condensers and head gaskets.
  • Skoda Superb - Wheel/Tyre Sizes 24 Apr 2014 (Forum)
An Honest John articel said there may be an issue with the brake calipers ? Anybody have any advice on this ? I have read articels where people say they have done this succesfully and the ride is much better, quieter and saves money on tyre replacements.
  • Carelessness equals carlessness 12 Nov 2013 (Forum)
When I went through the Police road-block about 07:15 am here was definitely ice on the road in parts because when I braked to slow down on a hill the ABS came into operation momentarily.  Whether the accident was caused by ice or carelessness I don’t know, but the car had rolled, perhaps several times, and was on its side.
  • BMW 3 Series Compact E46 - Old Car Electrics 7 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Today the alarm went off for no apparent reason but went off with the key press from the front door of the house. On investigation later most of the dashboard lights were on as were the brake lights and the central locking did not work either. Surprisingly the car started and ran OK with all the lights out but removing the key left all the lights etc still on. Disconnecting the battery turned everything off but reconnecting lit it all up again!
  • Taxis in Brussels 11 Oct 2013 (Forum)
The taxi SWMBO and I took to Brussels airport to catch the early flight home was driven by Mad Max who went through at least a set of brake pads, a clutch and a gearbox in his attempt to get out of rush hour Brussels nearly killing several pedestrians/cyclists in the process and a driving style that would have destroyed most other car makes.
  • VW Bora '02' - Keeps cutting out 14 Aug 2013 (Forum)
I have a VW Bora that keeps cutting out, normally when I am leaving a roundabout or going around corners leaving me without steering and brakes. When this happens the ESP light comes on first followed by the engine management light. No codes are raised. I cannot jump start the car and have to turn the ignition off and then restart the car.
  • Operating the electric handbrake..inconsistencies 6 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Some inconsistencies here in the application and use, if they standardised it would be better i'm sure. I can't comment on VW/Audi, and i can't remember exactly how the Vauxhall Insignia brake operated, but i don't recall anything unusual, and i can't remember how Renaults operate either. Anyway here's a few to start with Citroen Pull on Pull off. (C5, C6 normal siting, C4 Pic top of dash) Jaguar, Land Rover, (All Fords?)

  • Renault Scenic 2004 (53 plate) VVT 2.0 - Electronic handbrake unit 21 Feb 2012 (Forum)
The noise is definately coming from the offside rear area and only when the engine is stopped, the appropriate warning on the dash board is evident (Check rear brake)It just seems strange that it sholld occur so quickly after fitting the 2nd hand unit. Many thanks
  • Ford Focus - Difficult first start 20 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I changed the spark plugs and leads about 2 years ago and it didn't help at the time. Now back to the challenge! We got the car serviced for brake fluid and general look around the vehicle... the mechanics changed the sparkplugs again, saying they were black. The car starts the same. I changed the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor with new ones, no change.
  • renault megane scenic 05 - dashboard failure 17 Sep 2011 (Forum)
They said that theyd give me £2500 part exchange on another car. i agreed and signed an agreement. i was supposedto pick the car up yesterday. on my way to the dealership, ny car cut out on the motorway. frst the dashboard said injector failure then brake failure then my starter motor started clicking on its own and the noise wouldnt stop. I phoned the dealer, they said try to get the car towed to us and we will still honour the agreement. i called the AA out. he told me that if the dashboard fails the alternator wont charge the battery and you will get lots of warning messages appearing on your dashboard.
  • Ford Fiesta - Timing Belt change on 51 plate Zetec SE 1.25. 15 Jul 2011 (Forum)
After changing discs, pads, shoes, auxiliary belt, cleaning the Throttle Body and flushing the brakes, I'm temted to give it a go myself. But am unsure as to how big a step it is on from the above. I've had a small leak behind the power stearing for a little while and have been told that the washer behind it has been known to leak.
  • Triumph Tiger 955i - MOT Pass, but it should of Failed 15 May 2011 (Forum)
Banked over to the left and it seemed to lock on the steering, the side stand dropped cutting the motor and the front brake seemed to make the whole bike judder, but this had a brand new MOT? Contacted another garage as I still had a week left on the warranty, after, all 8 defects were found by vale motorcycles in Cowbridge I had the bike sent back to the original dealership with a list.
  • Renault Scenic 1.9 - electronic fault warning light 8 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Where is it situated, i.e. is it in a tricky place? The garage estimated £500, but this includes changing front brake pads
  • Ford Ka - Best Small Car Tyres 8 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Despite driving a Ford Ka (02), i still want the best possible tyres that balance road noise, longevity, wet / dry braking, handling not that bothered about price if i know i'm getting the best tyres. I was waiting to see if there were any new tyres out this winter that balanced winter / summer conditions, but nothing new seems available in my size (165 65 13).
  • VW Golf 2003 1.9 TDi - Graunchy Noises when accelerator depressed 15 Sep 2010 (Forum)
I have a 2003 Golf 1.9 TDi which has recently had a good deal of loving care and attention (and finance) spent on it... Having recently had new front brakes (discs and pads) and new wheel bearings (front) amongst other things, which has solved a variety of graunchy noises, now - starting after about 2 miles of a journey - when I depress the accelerator, I get a kind of intermittent grinding noise coming from the front of the car.
  • why doesn't anyone develop something like this? 20 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Reserve power for (say) 60 seconds of full bore acceleration provided by batteries charged by main generator when not under full load / regenerative braking. Without knowing specifics about energy density, charging rates, electric motor performance etc, I would have thought this would provide the answer to a lot of problems relating to heavy "full hybrid" drivetrains and large battery packs.
  • Does cruise control use more fuel? 26 Jun 2010 (Forum)
(No i am not the type who does 56.00 mph on the motorway, i do like to drive my car to the full within legal speeds of course ;-)   )   Imagine you are on the motorway with the cruise control set at 70 mph. You have to apply brakes which automatically disengages the cruise control. When you press resume does the cruise control make the car accelerate harder than normal hence using more fuel?   On a long journey is it economical to use cruise control compared to manual input (your right foot)?
  • VW Polo 03 1.2s - Engine warning light on for trivial problem 27 May 2010 (Forum)
The engine warning light came on - knowing the fault could be quite trivial, I checked the lights and sure enough I found a blown brake-light bulb. I changed the bulb (cost £1) but the (expletive deleted) warning light stayed on. Rang the indy VW specialist who service the car, they said 'that happens sometimes' and that they'd need to plug in the diagnostics computer to clear it, which they did for £22+VAT.
