  • 2005 Ford Mondeo Estate - Used Car Issue 25 Feb 2015 (Forum)
After taking the car for a service in line with the warranty conditions one month after buying the car (and the MOT), the garage told me that the rear shock absorbers were worn out, brake pipes were corroded and brake flexi-hose was badly deteriorated and would not have passed an MOT. Can anyone tell me what my position is legally? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Sian
  • MB C220 CDI - momentum warranties - the wear and tear scam 25 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Fortunately statistics are on our side - if turbos failed like that through service wear they would be popping all over the place and changed as regularly as brake discs - clearly they're not.  Turbo reconditioners are not as common as brake and clutch centres. Wife has another car to drive.  Fortunately, as Momentum have dragged this out for a month now.
  • Clutch warranty claim - Maker will dispute 20 May 2012 (Forum)
They have suggested that the clutch failure is due to mis-use i.e. holding the car on inclines using the clutch rather than the brakes. This is a ludicrous suggestion on three counts firstly, I simply do not follow this practice and never have in 10+yrs of owning cars with auto boxes; secondly, I live and drive almost entirely around Warwick where, as anyone who knows the area will confirm, there are precious few inclines where you can hold your car whether on the clutch or brakes.
  • Chevrolet Epica - Chevrolet Epica diesel 1 year on 12 Aug 2011 (Forum)
(PS, Pentagon, you ARE forgiven) Fuel economy has averaged around 40mpg (big heavy car) and better than 45mpg motorways to london, which we do once a month. 2nd year service cost at vauxhall network Q here in carmarthen extremely well carried out, and cost just  £99 inc vat + parts +oil total was about £217 oil. air and fuel filters all changed, and brake fluid changed too. car left spotlessly clean too! (first year service done before delivery) 2 front tyres changed at about 16000 miles, (could have got more out of them but was going to do a lot of miles going to france-belgium and changed the tyres to have new tread on the wheels) very little wear on brake discs, and no recorded problems except a "change oil soon" light that came on 5000 miles after service, but 12 months after previous oil service, so maybe not reset. national tyres did oil change castrol edge turbo diesel, (6.2litres) for £51, so no complaints.
  • I was sold a dangerous vehicle and have no rights? 9 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The technician who has inspected my vehicle is willing to confirm that deterioration of these components would have been evident at pre-inspection 4 months ago. I have since accessed the MOT advisory note and the brake system, corrosion & tyre are all noted on there. The other faults are all noted on the previous advice note of 2007! I have sent a recorded delivery letter to the car sales asking for what I mentioned above and have reported it to Trading Standards.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 2003 PD130 owner's report 24 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Apart from the knuckle joint, I?ve had one hose clip on the intercooler break (my fault for fiddling), and one brake light bulb blow. That?s it. Still on original clutch, brake pads & discs. One tip ? Conti SportContacts are the best tyre for longevity. The factory-fit set lasted 33K on the front, and 50K rear.
  • 306 stiff gearbox issue 29 Aug 2006 (Forum)
i suspect something is up with the clutch or more likely the cable as also when you do put it in gear there is a low pitched grating noise, imagine like you were putting a needle on the flywheel whilst it's turning or a stone grating on a brake disc etc. i suspect the clutch cable needs doing and as such isn't engaging the clutch sufficiently enough to allow the box to slot into gear, another reason for this suspicion is it goes into gears fine with the engine switched off. so can anybody suggest any other possible causes?
  • Travel in Rhodesia 25 May 2004 (Forum)
He then observed an African gentleman of his acquaintance ride on his bike over the opposite brow. When he was over the brow he saw the animals and tried to stop. Brakes on bikes were not regarded as a priority, a steady progress was all that was desired. Stopping was generally accomplished by braking the tyre with your foot. Walking bare footed since birth gives the indigenous quite hard feet.
  • n/a - HGV speed limiters 1 Aug 2025 (Forum)
I used to think that HGVs were limited to 56 mph and this was confirmed by my experience of the sheer number of lorries going at just this speed or lower. I understand the brakes are applied if the lorry overshoots going down an incline. However, apparently the legal limit has been 60 mph since 2015 and I assume that HGV operators were choosing a lower setting, possibly to reduce fuel costs.
  • Modern cars - - putting the frighteners on 8 Jun 2025 (Forum)
After inspecting the car and consulting Professor Google, it seems that the most likely cause is a failed wheel speed sensor which has caused the ABS light, the wheel brake pic, the skiddy line pic (ESP) the tyre pressure light and the spanner to appear.    Assured her it was still perfectly safe to drive (thankfully the loud beeps stop after a bit) and booked into indy for diagnosis and repair next week.
  • Renault Clio - consumer rights 3 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Hi, I bought a brand new Clio hybrid in January. It has some electrical and braking issues although no breakdowns yet. I have contacted the dealer several times to book an appointment but they are ignoring my emails and phone calls. I am concerned that the 6 month statutory rights period will be finishing soon and the dealer is just wasting time.
  • Infiniti Q30 but Mercedes parts - Front vibration cause - Diagnostic help 14 Sep 2023 (Forum)
Basically the car vibrates from the OSF front driver side when it is cruising at 65mph+ and get worse as speed increases and some mechanical play can be felt right under where the clutch pedal area is (mine is auto).  Have done wheel bearing, new tire, new brake, wheel alignment and wheel balancing but couldn't resolve the issue. Engine and gearbox are running smoothly. No strange noise can be heard but suspect inner CV joint, control arm or bushing.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2002 convertible hood problems 17 Aug 2023 (Forum)
I checked all the windows were up ? no difference. I also tried to power the hood with the windows down ? no difference. Hand Brake was on every time we tried. When we got home I opened all the windows and tried again, it unlocked the windscreen section about six inches and then started bleeping again and got stuck! In the end I had to manually wind the roof back to closed with the allen key.
  • Who does the best/worst driver-assist features? 14 Aug 2023 (Forum)
The car would routinely mis-identify lanes, sound a siren and flash a screen telling me to stop, pop-up unhelp warning whenever approaching roundabouts, and it would release the handbrake prematurely when starting on hills. It wasn't a feature set that impressed me. I've read that automatic emergency braking (AEB) triggering erroneously has been an issue with some cars, including Hondas. I expected better from Honda. There doesn't seem to be any quality standard for this feature set. I'd like to know which manufacturers fair well, which poorly, and how easy it is to turn these features off permanently?
  • Audi a3 1.4 tfsi - Strange Noise from Front Left Tire - Need Help! 9 Aug 2023 (Forum)
I took my car to a mechanic, and they took it for a spin. They mentioned it could potentially be related to the brake pads, but upon inspection, the pads seem to be in decent condition. The thing is, the mechanic didn't actually hear the noise themselves. Lucky for me, I managed to capture the sound in a recording, which you can listen to here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/nqd0rngeqr1sd07zkuxhb/IMG_1357.MOV?
  • 11 plate Suzuki Alto 25 Apr 2023 (Forum)
I found that rather impressive Suzuki simple mechanics can be so reliable and at the same time incredible an owner can be so ignorant In over 10 years of ownership the car has only required tyres and brakes until this recent MOT when part of the exhaust and some suspension components were replaced.
  • Hyundai Amica 02/Automatic - Hyundai Amica '02 - MOT Advisories 21 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Oddly enough, one has come up on Autotrader close to where I live for £1,750 (next MOT end of July) with the following advisories: Rear Registration plate deteriorated but not likely to be misread (0.1 (b)) Power steering pipe/hose has slight seepage steering rack (2.1.5 (a)) Nearside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement rear bush (5.3.4 (a) (i)) Offside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement rear bush (5.3.4 (a) (i)) Offside Front Wheel bearing slightly noisy (5.1.3 (b) (i)) Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material all pipes coated (1.1.11 (c)) are these going to be costly to fix down the line? Should I give this a skip?
  • Simpler times 24 Jun 2022 (Forum)
Every time it sensed a line in the road (often where none existed) it bleeps an annoying warning at me, must’ve done it a dozen times or so on our short journey. The also completely unnecessary electronic parking brake also works counterintuitively and I find it takes far longer to operate the thing than a simple conventional handbrake. The stereo and ventilation controls are unnecessary complex for a simpleton like me too.
  • VW Polo 1.2 - Is it worth continuing with main dealer servicing? 25 Jan 2022 (Forum)
I didn’t buy from VW, but it did come with 4 VW services under its belt. It’s now due a major service and also apparently a brake fluid service. My local VW have quoted £433 for this work, a local garage (specialising in VW, Audi and Skoda) has quoted around the £300 mark. My question is, from a resale value perspective, is it worth continuing with main dealer servicing?
