  • 1.6 Petrol 2004 8P - Rattling Exhaust Like Noise Audi A3 8 May 2013 (Forum)
Its more noticable in motion, In very loud if you wind down the passenger window, and noticable to passer by's! Not convinced it is the exhaust. There are no obvious sign of problems with the brakes and the vehicle steering feels OK,  and the engine seems to run fine with no warning lights.  I'm thinking maybe a loose baffle? Or wheel bearing maybe. Heres hoping someone else may have experienced similar with even with and Octavia, Leon or Golf 5?
  • N/a - Autobox + aged drivers = hazard 10 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Fortunately she was only shaken and confused, no one else was injured, but unless there genuinely is some demonic mechanical gremlin which activates when elderly drivers try to park or maneouvre, I suspect this and the other cases of loss of control are due to the driver desperately pressing the accelerator to try and stop;  HJ always recommends left foot braking with automatics (I've always done so when I had autos). Would it not be a good idea for anyone selling an auto to someone accustomed to manuals to take time to emphasise this is the safe method?
  • Ford Fiesta 1.4 Titanium, 59 plate - Front discs and pads 9 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I'd also be grateful for an opinion on the necessity or otherwise of using a torque wrench to tighten bolts when reassembling brake mechanisms, rather than just giving them a "good welly".  Views on this appear to differ. :0) Cheers       Cheers.
  • VW 1997 1.9 Polo - Diesel motor surging 12 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Gentlemen and Ladies, Since my diesel car last ran out of fuel ... my car has a habit of over rev'ing and surging at low rev's and also starting to drag (choke) then release itself and accelorate away again - while I am driving on the motorway at say... 70 mph around the 3000 rev's - then surging and giving me so much power that i have to brake to maintain the speed limit. I can feel something just go klunk and the surge is unmistakable, lovely power but short lived.  My car is a non-turbo job, I have replaced both the air and the fuel filter recently.
  • Vauxhall Astra MK4 2001 - MAF Sensor Replaced. Still problems.. 10 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I was informed that my MAF sensor had gone, so I replaced it. The idling is now perfect, however, when approaching junctions and when braking, the accelerator revs as if I pushed on the throttle, 2 or 3 times, then it calms down as i come to a stop at the junction. Weird stuff.. any suggestions? Ive checked the butterfly valve in the throttle body, its clean and runs smoothly.
  • Audi A6 Avant 2.7 TDI Quattro - Intermittent Electrics 29 Jun 2012 (Forum)
The condition seems to be sensitive to the instrument warning panel indicator, as I have noticed that if the windscreen top up fluid or brake pad warning signal (need replacing soon) appears, it provokes the condition above. Any ideas?
  • Citroen DS - 1964 citroen DS, should I buy? Is it rare? 1 Jan 2012 (Forum)
The price is good I think, he wants $1500 for it, but will I spend way more to get it going again? The motor does turn over, and the body is straight and solid, needs headliner, probably brakes, don´t know about the rest. Thanks ahead for any help!Mike
  • ford focus estate - replacing discs and pads 11 Dec 2011 (Forum)
hi all. i had new discs and pads fitted 18 months ago by local mechanic who ive used for years. i had brake judder. this fixed my judder. he has just done interim service and advised that discs looked worn. theres a groove on one disc. i am a precision engineer by trade and would say is no deeper than 0.1mm deep. on the edge of the disc is a lip no bigger than 0.4mm. so are they still ok or have to be replaced?
  • Fiat Ducato X250 motorhome/ Alko chassis A class - overheating rear steel wheels 4 Nov 2011 (Forum)
The handbrake is set exactly in accordance with Fiat's  manual and neither the disc brakes nor drum shoes are binding. With the rear jacked up and the handbrake fully "off" the wheels rotate reasonably freely , after some initial slight "stickiness". Yet after travelling 12 miles or so , the wheels in the vicinity of their retaining bolts are hot !
  • Ford Focus - Very odd goings on in my Focus 25 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I managed to switch it to the fully off position. Then I noticed that the indicators had stopped working. Also noticed that the Brake Warning Light was on. Finally when I'd got home I tried to open the boot to let the dog out and that was also not working. Fortunately he could get out by folding the rear seat down! It seems odd that all these seemingly unrelated problems have just suddenly occurred.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift - Cam Belt 29 Jun 2011 (Forum)
The cam belt snapped on the motorway this week when i was doing about 60 so i expect a fair bit of damage. The garage is telling me that a number of things could have caused the belt to brake and something could have seezed, it will cost over £480 to put right. I know i am over 12 months which is what i would expect a warranty to cover but i have only done about 10k miles in it.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B I.8 2003 - Cruise Control System 1 Jun 2011 (Forum)
I can find no reference the cruise control system in the Haynes workshop manual. It has been suggested that the problem is a weak return spring with the clutch/brake pedal unit not returning to its full position. I have checked the pedals and all seems OK although I am unable to locate the return spring and it is not shown in the workshop manual. Can anyone help with ideas to the problem?
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.25 auto - Stalling problem 2 May 2011 (Forum)
It stalls after turning the engine on and trying to put it into drive. The way I have to press the brake in to put the car into drive is very different to my hubbys Renault Laguna RT (R Reg). It always seems to shudder when putting into drive. Also it stutters a lot when slowing down, approaching junctions and pulling off.
  • Ford Mondeo Mk4 - Clutch Slip? 1 Apr 2011 (Forum)
There is no evidence of clutch slip when pulling away, even on a hill start. Also, in cruise control, when RES is used to return to the selected speed after braking, the engine begins to accelerate and then the the cruise control cuts out back into standby mode, as if the clutch had been depressed. As I have a driving style that is light on the clutch and never in 40 years have I had a clutch problem I am surprised and perturbed.
  • Ford Focus Zetec - Clutch pedal plastic eyelet broke?! 16 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I am am loads of trouble with my 2002 ford focus just lately, probably because I mentioned selling it, she has now cost me nearly £500 since January!! Anyway, after just having had my brake caliper un seized today, the lad who does the repair work on the car for me has rang to say that after depressing the clutch pedal the white plastic eyelet that attaches to the welded stud on the clutch pedal fell off into a few pieces landing in the footwell.
  • BMW X3 - Multiple problems 27 Jan 2011 (Forum)
The following warning lights came on at the same time today: 4x4, ABS, Brake system, Tyre pressure, Air bag; in addition, the speedometer and cruise control do not work and the mileage remaining from the current fuel tank contents moves erratically.   They have quoted me£1.500 for diagnostic work and a new DSC Control unit (which will take 3 - 5 days to come from Germany.
  • Datsun Bluebird 910 (1983) - Recommission of car 11 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Obviously it will need a proper assessment as to what bits need sorting or replaced, but does anyone have any tips for the things that must be done so as to get it back into occasional but reliable use?  I presume change of all the oils & fluids, probably brake pipes, tyres, hoses etc.  Any tips?
  • BMW320i M Sport - Winter Tyres on a BMW - wow wow wow! 3 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I then tried our FWD Golf on summer tyres on the same circuit and it wouldn't go up the hill (had to reverse off that).  The braking on the winter tyres is excellent compared to the summer tyres. I am now going to purchase a set for our Polo which will shortly replace the Golf. I'm very glad we didn't replace our BMW with a 4x4!
  • Audi A4 2.0TDIe - Stop start System 25 Nov 2010 (Forum)
As an example. the wife was driving home last night and slowed down into 2nd gear for a speed bump. She had the clutch depressed whilst braking and took her foot of the clutch at approx 5mph and pressed the accelarator (In 2nd Gear). At this point the engine cut out and she lost all asistance to the steering. After a second the engine fired again and all was restored.
  • Nissan D21 Pickup - Random power loss 8 Jun 2010 (Forum)
However whilst driving along the power seems to vary quite a lot, its not too extreme, I can keep up with other traffic etc and there does not appear to be any pattern to it. But it will just loose power suddenly, it feels like turbo lag or like the brakes are being lightly applied. Then, very gradualy it will wear off. There is no change in engine noise and no smoke when it happens....Any ideas what it could be? Thanks for reading, Tom PS its a non turbo engine.
