  • Tyre valves too long ! ! ! 11 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Just had some new alloy wheels fitted to my Vectra C , a local tyre fitter done the change over for me . BUT.........................the standard valves are too long as they are catching the brake caliper while wheels turning. The valve is not situated on the outside of the alloy but more towards the middle of the alloy wheel. I obviously asked cant he fit shorter valves , but said he didnt have any and also he didnt think you can get them !
  • sluggish saxo 1.1 31 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I am only getting 41 mpg compared with 48mpg from my previous Peugeot 106 with similar miles and same engine, the Peugeot also had more zest, as has my mothers saxo. My driving style is the same and the brakes are not dragging, the air filter is clean and I have no engine management lights up or any misfiring. The car is going into the garage soon to have a new sunroof and door seal under warranty any ideas why the power could be down and mpg down before it goes in so I can point them in the right direction, they need all the help they can get......
  • Keep it or change it??? 29 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi,just looking for other opinions here.I have a 2001 1.9TDi VW Passat (130).Not been too happy overall with the car (build quality wise) but love driving it.Excellent performance and excellent mpg. However, it is now at 58000 miles. In the coming months it is due a timing belt change (£250+),needs at least 2 x tyres and a service.I would also guess the brakes aren't too far away from needing done.I have heard of various horror stories about catalytic converters going and a variety of "common" faults on VW's that I have not yet experienced.I quite fancy the new Vectra and in particular the 2.2 SRi (petrol) model.I do about 15K miles a year, so the diesel/petrol debate isn't so important. What do I do????
  • Mondeo Estate - thumping and squealing 30 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Also, when turning or pulling away from a stop you get a squeal from the back of the car, on one side or the other that sounds 'mechanical' - like brakes binding or something. It seems to do this more so when under load, or strangly enough, when the weather is cold. The rear tyres are still the original, so are now 4 years old, but are in good condition.
  • new honda civic 30 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Everyone raves about Honda reliabilty and "hondas do not rattle". I bought new 3 door 1.6 sport December 23 2003,nothing but problems from day 1. Screeching Brakes, creaking underneath which after many visits to the delaer resulted in new suspension struts on a car of 1500 miles! New windscreen seal as faulty. Yes the Honda dealer is helpful but on new honda all of this plus rear body fender not fastened --a Japanese car build in uk.
  • A/T tyres 24 Sep 2004 (Forum)
The current tyres are Bridgestone Dueler H/T 235/60/R16 100H, these do not grip well on these tracks (gravel, grass, wet etc)and slide even under braking at low speed (13k miles on the clock and plenty of tread left) I cannot find any A/T tyres in 235/60 so is it possible to fit 235/70/R 16 with a different speed rating? Would I need new rims, would it affect the performance on road i.e. make the car unstable, would it cause any other problems?
  • Parting is such sweet sorrow 12 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Yes, the '69 Bullitt Mustang 351. We did the front brake disc conversion, sorted out the trans with expensive bits FedExe'd from Oklahoma, rebuilt the Holley 4bbl carb (check the HJ pix site for pix) but the electrics remain a mystery to even the most inventive of Filipino mechanics.
  • Prepare for bright nights 29 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I'm typing this through a residual red haze, imprinted on my retinae. As usual the worst culprits were those with only one functioning brake light, leaving you guessing as to whether they were slowing or going. Bless 'em. So just to warn you all that for the next 2 weeks or so you can expect these same people to have forgotten that they switched the damn things on, thus blinding all and sundry once it gets dark.
  • Polo 1.6CL(100BHP) Drinking Problem 25 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I am going to give it a few more full tanks just to make sure, but is there anything else that i could be looking at in the mean time? (I've checked the brakes etc and they're all fine) Thanks in advance
  • Temperature Gauge MAX Fiesta 1.3 23 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I have a Fiesta 1.3 LX 1996 Endura-E engine which has developed a problem in the Temperature Gauge giving a constant Maximum reading. It doesn\'t give a max reading when the ignition is on(ie. oil, brake, and battery light illuminated) only when the engine has started and within 2 seconds needles shoots to MAX reading. This fault only developed after I removed the starter motor to check the condition of the Flywheel.
  • Scrapping our car! 1 Apr 2004 (Forum)
This dealer said that if he puts trade plates on it this is OK he also said that he will give us a receipt saying what time he collected it, it also has no brake lights! Is this legal I just want to be sure we will have no comeback from this! pS Have bought 2 newer cars a 1999 Vectra 16v. And a 1999 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec. I am so chuffed
  • To the people of Aylesbury.... 16 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I know in every place there are people who do not understand roundabouts, but I swear in Aylesbury that absolutely *nobody* understands, and I drive through there twice a day and have done for the last 6 months. 4) You do not get extra credit if when seeing a camera in a 60 limit you instantly brake and go past it at 30.
  • passat tdi stop sign illuminating 16 Mar 2004 (Forum)
It only seems to happen when car has been left parked up for a couple of days or more and does not stay on long enough to show the fault (oil presure, coolant level, brake fluid etc). Put the car into VW to have it plugged into the vag com no faults recorded. Incidently the car has covered 58,000 miles from new full vw service and extra oil change between services. Anybody any thoughts on this problem?
  • Extended service intervals, gone daft? 13 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My question is:- do M-B know something, or use something, different to the rest of us, or, are they about to lose their reputation for vehicles that go on forever? Personally I would have thought that whatever oils, fluids and brake linings are being used 30,000 miles must be pushing it somewhat. Obviously such intervals will appeal to the fleet leasing fraternity as it will cut servicing costs dramatically but I can't see it doing an awful lot for longevity.
  • Passat - Noise driving me mad 6 Mar 2004 (Forum)
has suddenly started. It sound like a ball bearing rolling up and down the car around the centre console region. No idea what it is.I removed the centre console around the handbrake and cannot see anything. When you brake or go down a hill it rolls forward, the opposite if you go up a hill.It isn't a "short" roll either. It is about 2 secs.Anyone got any ideas?. I actually thought I'd cracked it before.I found a ball-bearing (???)
  • Honda Civic Type R 16 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Had a test drive yesterday. Fine machine: very capable chassis, meaty steering (maybe a little lacking in feel), great brakes, great seats, rock-solid build. Engine (surprisingly, to me, though I'm a VTEC virgin) flexible. Gorgeous looks, of course. The only negative was what I took to be road noise, a background presence that was always there.
  • Astra 2000 1.7 dti 16v management light 16 Dec 2003 (Forum)
It all points to a glowplug (pig to get to the connectors to test) but it starts from freezing cold on the button (brake light bulbs are both fine they are linked with low resistance circuit with glowplugs). Trawled through the forums but this engine seems to be a bit scarce here at the moment. Any pointers would be most welcome.
  • Dangerous Junctions 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Started indicating at the 200 yds marker and proceded to enter the slip road. A van came out of the petrol station and onto the sliproad and blocked my path. I had to brake hard, and as the road was damp, the wheels locked and I slid into the rear of the van. A very dangerous junction as most people exiting the petrol station think people indicating to come off the carridge was are going to the petrol station and not to the town.
  • Longevity - How long do you keep yours ? 25 Nov 2003 (Forum)
A quick trawl of neighbours and relatives reveals that most of them are rich enough to buy a new car every couple of yrs or so and chop it in, or they're on company cars - ditto. Why on earth would they bother treating the car with kid gloves , changing oil, coolant, brake fluid etc. Of course this may well be done for them under warranty etc. So, how long do you keep yours ? And do you look after it to prolong its life for you, or for someone else in the future ??
  • mazda 6 gearchange 1 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Car otherwise excellent -rattle free with brilliant ride, handling, engine refinement steering and braking particularly .Engine not as flexible as some however so take a careful test drive if you like to accelerate out of roundabouts in third or from 50(as opposed to 60) in top on the motorway!oh and fuel consumption rather less than VAG tdi"s(less than 40 mixed-my old A4 90 consistently 46to 48 even at 167,000 miles!)
