  • Volkswagen Lupo (1999 - 2004) - 00 1.4 Intermittent wail 9 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Selecting neutral at 60 mph has no effect until the car slows to around 45 mph, when it will die away. It may or may not resume on picking up speed. Lately the noise occurs briefly when the brake pedal is first applied, going over a pothole or going downhill. My VW garage have not been able to satisfactorily identify the source but have, presumably, given everything a good shake. Any ideas anyone?
  • Vauxhall Cavalier (1988 - 1995) - 1994 1.6 New battery, now ABS light is on? 6 Jan 2009 (Forum)
    - but since i have done this the ABS light on the dash board has come on and stays on, with this cold weather I don't want to risk driving it if there is a potential problem with the brake system - but I am sure it has something to do with the battery change as it was fine before - does anyone know of this happening or how to cure it? I am a single mother and would really like to avoid spending too much money on a mechanic!

  • Potential problems with low-mileage Focus. 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Original tyres (2000 manufacture), too old? 3. Still on its original cam belt. 4. Disks are a bit rusty, brake fluid last changed 2005. 5. No ABS. 6. Reg 04/01 so liable to VED rises. Any other potential causes for concern? Will engine and breaks improve with use? Advice? Thanks in advance.
  • Buying a car with an inordinately low mileage. 1 Dec 2008 (Forum)
On the other hand, if the mileage is so low (circa 10k), is this really an issue? Obviously an overhaul of the braking system (disks and fluid) would be in order, but supposing the car has been getting its annual service, are there any other pitfalls? I am interested in the merits of buying a high-mileage ex-fleet car (easy motorway miles) versus those of buying an older car with a tiny mileage.
  • How to save the life of a clutch 23 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I can't think of any reason my drivign style would cause premature wear to the clutch. And I am spending a bit on brake work on Monday so I don't want to ever have to repalce the clutch while I own the car (its only a £150 job on my car, but its a lot for a banger). I failt o see how you can burn it out easily unless you do wheel spins at all traffic lights etc.

  • Citroen Synergie (1995 - 2002) - 1997 2.0 (Petrol) stalling when idling 27 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Is it something more serious e.g. electronic sensors and/or engine management ? As it is dangerous to drive (loss of steering and brake effectiveness) can anyone recommend a mobile workshop ?

  • DIY- Interest, Summer Servicing completed (you?) 16 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Both cars now fully serviced, on the drive. All the detailed `extra`s` such as antifreeze and distilled water, rustproofing of brake pipes/sumps/subframes and so on. Best synthetic oils, clean latex gloves on handling fuel/oil/air filter elements. All those little details that you do yourself with no time constraints on the job.
  • Car Anatomy Book Suggestions 6 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I'm basically looking for a book that manages to bridge the gap between texts for the totally uninitiated and service manuals full of complex specifications. Anything that covers the engine, transmission, electrical & ignition systems, brakes, steering & suspension, body & chassis, etc but also goes into detail about the working parts. For example, topics for the engine may include individual detail on the crankshaft, flywheel, piston, valve timing, tappets, camshaft, carburettor, etc, etc.
  • Austin (Rover) Mini (1972 - 2001) - 91 Mini 998cc Electrical fault. 31 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Originally the left hand indicators when activated would just stay on and the rear tail lights would not work at all, although the brake lights work fine . After cleaning the earth connections the tail lights and headlights have come on... permanently. The only way to shut them off is to pull 2 of the fuses under the bonnet, the one for the operating with ignition and the always on circuit.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2001 HDI - whining noise when revving, EGR/Turbo? 27 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I noticed its more detectable from the right hand side of the engine block (as you loof at the engine). This has connections from the brake servo so im assuming its the EGR valve? However the picture of the engine bay that ive seen shows the turbo in this position connected to the EGR. Im wondering if this could be coked up? Any advise to make it run better/quieter would be appreciated.
  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 1999 1.1x - Alternator questions 25 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Anyone any idea how much it normally costs for a garage to replace an alternator? Given that the car is only worth about £500 and then MOT is coming up when it will need brakes and probably a few other bits, i'm in two minds whether to just sell spares / repairs... Thanks
  • Which small car will suit my trailer? 10 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Do I need to find a car with an unbraked towing weight of 750+ or should I be looking at the weight of the car. My current car (Audi A4) weighs 1405 kg, has unbraked 740kg and braked 1600kg and pulls the trailer easily but I am selling it and need the smallest capable car. Any suggestions please? Thanks
  • unused vehicle blocking driveway 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The tenent has been offered money for the car, but refuses to sell. The tenent shows no sign of mending the vehicle (which convieniently has it's brakes locked) and it still has a flat tyre from monhs ago. At what point are we alowed to dismantle either the car or the tenent? ALL suggestions welcomed.

  • Ford Focus ST (2005 - ) - 02 steering problem after bearing change. 24 Jan 2008 (Forum)
t feel very sturdy on the front end, mainly drivers side. The car will pull very badly to the right when the car is in slow moving traffic and the braking on that particular wheel feels and sounds odd. The pulling stops at speed but the front end feels very light and tends to give a fair bit of vibration. I will be having a look under the car this weekend if the rain finally stops, but any ideas on where I could look to identify the problem would be a great help.
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - Broken window writes off car? - Advice please. 22 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Informed the insurance company and they've come and removed the car because its not secure, and tell me its a write off.I'll be contacted tomorrow so they say. I'd rather have the car made good. We know the history of it , have spent money on brakes etc recently and it has a top range pioneer stereo with a 6cd stack, car does very little mileage.Anyone got any advice?
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - DIY changing suspension 15 Sep 2007 (Forum)
The handling on my car is getting worse, I'm sure the suspension is tired (car weaves under heavy braking and acceleration, also it getting more and more wobbly when changing lanes on the motorway). Anyway the question - A few years ago I changed the rear suspension on my Mk2 Golf with little trouble with nothing more than a set of spanners and a socket set.
