  • Central Locking Prob - Rear door, Astra. 11 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Is there anything simple that I could do to solve this? I am not going to any garage/mechanic about it so soon after having the brake and reverse switches replaced. Thanks for any suggestions. HF
  • Bust leg - will an auto help me? 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Some friends recommend I buy a cheap auto and I have in fact got the option of a 1990 MK 2 Golf auto. Question is, will this help or not? I'm not convinced as I'd have to learn to brake safely with my left leg for there to be any advantage. Any advice out there? Thanks Baz
  • Pug 306 strange noises 7 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I drive an L reg 306 1.4XR, its done about 90k miles. 2 days ago i noticed a kind of knocking/vibration noise, seeming to come from the left hand front side of the car. the noise increases in time with the speed of the wheels and is most noticable under engine braking; yet it continues to make the noise when freewheeling with the engine off and out of gear. The noise seems to dissapear under acceleration. I'd rather not have to take it to a garage as being a student means my finances are limited.
  • grabbing autobox 24 Apr 2002 (Forum)
All the gear changes happen when they should, but over the last year it has started to snatch at some changes. It only happens on light throttle, most often around 15mph/1000rpm when gently braking, or around 20mph/2000rpm on the way up, but it can behave perfectly doing the same things, and seems to have good and bad days. Suggestions on tests/observations to narrow down the field and find the cause and the cure would be very welcome as it's the only thing that spoils my enjoyment of the car.
  • VW Passat TDI clutch -advise 15 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Disengaging still occurs at half travel. The cars has 32,000 on it, I don't ride the clutch and always hold it on the brakes at junctions. There is absolutely no slippage once engaged. Any ideas what might cause this behaviour ? Thanks in anticipation.
  • Turbo whine. 29 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I got it a few weeks ago and it seemed ok then (Maybe l wasn't listening). Of late l have begun to notice a whine (like a short low braking squeak) when l am coming OFF the throttle after the turbo has kicked in. This happens around 3psi as the needle drops back towards negative boost. I guess l could ignore it as it makes no noise when it spools up etc.. but l don't want it to be an obvious symptom of something terrible to come.
  • Honda Civic 1.0 SR - First impressions 9 May 2019 (Forum)
Technically I am disappointed that the 1.0 is a cam belt in oil with a 65k change interval.bNo issue to the fleets but a cost for those of us who run to higher miles. The electronic parking brake is not intuitive in manual mode. You can only apply and release it with the foot brake engaged. So setting off requires you to treat the driver behind to a blast of brake light, and then manually release the button.

  • Honda Civic 2017 - Warning Lights Pinging on Startup 31 Mar 2023 (Forum)
When I put the key in the ignition and switch it to the on position I regularly see the Deflation Warning Light flashing and then pinging followed by pings for the City Brake Assist (CTBA), the VSA, and the ABS. These warning lights stay illuminated on the dash during that driving session but the car runs perfectly and all braking-related functions are fine This only seems to happen when the car has been driven and warmed up and rarely, if ever, when starting from cold at the start of the day.
  • Hyundai i40 Tourer - Car Noises at slow speed 6 Jul 2021 (Forum)
Hi all, I’m after a bit of advice if you can, I have a Hyundai i40 Tourer, March 2015 plate, 75k on the clock, Just lately when driving at slow speeds I hear a squeaking sound, sounds a bit like the brakes do when they need replacing but it’s not when I’m braking it’s noticeable when moving off at slow speed or even letting the car slow on its own (rolling up to light/junction etc) alongside this I’ve also noticed it feels wobbly/vibration up through the steering column when going over bumps or simply an a road which isn’t totally flat , seems worse when slowing down on a decline, I had the steering column replaced this time last year due to a knocking noise when turning the steering wheel (it is making the same noise again) if I turn the wheel when stationary left and right it’s making a clicking/knocking noise (I don’t know much about cars so don’t know if that’s normal etc) Overall it just feels different to drive at the moment (I don’t think I’m over thinking it) :) Feel like I would like to get a rough idea what it could be before I go to the garage as I saw on a Hyundai Facebook group someone had some Vibration and it’s been back and forth to a garage and cost him £690 so far replacing bits and he still has the issue, would like to avoid that if possible.
  • Hyundai i30 Crdi - Used car repairs 31 Mar 2021 (Forum)
End of November 2020 I brought a used Hyundai i30 from a car dealer (Not Hyundai) I only had the car 2 hours in my possession before the car was returned to the dealer, Rear brakes were binding and making a racket and had 2 TPMS warnings. I didn't see the car again for 5 days whilst the brake pads were replaced and a tyre pressure sensor changed. A week later the car was returned again, another tyre pressure warning and a nail found in the tyre which was replaced.

  • Vauxhall Corsa D - Fair price for in-family purchase 13 Feb 2016 (Forum)
If the clutch actually proves OK I will give him another £400, i.e £2,400. I am ignoring the cost of brakes as I regard them as consumables. We will run it into the ground so the history and mileage don't concern us in terms of future resale. What do the panel think, is £2,000 fair to both sides?
  • peugeot 306 hdi dt (99) - fuel problem, starting and running 4 Jun 2015 (Forum)
Since then the car has given me nothing but trouble. sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn"t. sometimes it stalls when braking coming up to roundabouts and when stationry or idlling, sometimes its fine. sometimes it kangaroos everywhere and sounds like its running on three cylinders. It seems worst when its wet or damp. Now it keeps going into limp mode and wont go above 2300rpm.
  • Citroen C3 Picasso - Shunt dynamics - help needed 15 May 2015 (Forum)
I am nearly 12 months into an isurance claim relating to a 3 car shunt on the motorway of which I was the middle car. The car in front of me braked suddenly, I managed to stop just a few feet from him and was hit from behind and pushed into the car in front. My car was almost a write-off with extensive damage to the front but minimal damage to the rear.
  • 2005 VW Polo 1.2 - Running Problems 11 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I'm having a few minor running problems with my car - I recently had the fuel filter replaced and the brake fluid renewed (and bled properly)...I'm not sure if these issues are related but they've only come about since. Car has 150k on the clock and original clutch...mainly motorway miles. - The clutch feels really soft and smooth (unusually smooth, maybe new fluid has done this.).
  • Saab 9-5 Aero - Fettling the front calipers 20 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I need to change the front brake pads on my car.  Unusually for me, I can't track down in my records exactly when I fitted the last set, but I have in my mind that it doesn't seem so long ago.
  • Lorry drivers - inconsiderate 27 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I had one indicate to come out from the left lane virtually in front of me. He indicated, paused a second, then went. Luckily, I didn't have to brake, but it was close. A few minutes later another one indicated and went the same instant causing me to brake sharply. The most annoying thing about the latter's action was there no cars anywhere near behind me.
  • Peugeot 406 - Replacing a steering rack 20 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Centre the steering wheek (1.5 turns) Soak ball joints in WD40 and take of nuts (if they won't undue - shave with angle grinder/hacksaw and flick off, don't damage threads) the nuts need replacing anyway. Remove heat shield, fiddly but access from passenger side. Clamp rubber pressure pipes with brake pipe 'G' cramps. Remove 2 rubber brake pipe securing bolts. Take out 2 large steering rack bolts, catch spacers (after removing the rack I stuck these back with a dab of araldite to save fussing later).
  • All - Changing to Automatics 14 Jul 2010 (Forum)
HJ seems to be fielding numerous questions in the DT Motoring Section and here about the new Jazz i-shift and people complaining about "jerky" gearchanges, and he is also advocating L foot braking for Autos. I am afraid that I would suggest that the complainants are showing an unfortunate lack of mechanical understanding and sensitivity in their use of autos in general, and automated manuals in particular.
