December saw the tenth consecutive fall in monthly new registrations – by 3.7% - but it still beat forecasts originally set by the SMMT in September. With many buyers opting to choose more fuel efficient models, sales of diesel and alternative fuel vehicles, such as electric or hybrid cars, reached a record high in 2011, taking a higher share of the market than petrol powered cars. Overall, fuel economy and emissions on new vehicles have decreased. -

First Diesel Engine to Meet Euro 4 Emission Regs 17 Dec 2002 (News)
The 1686cc 16v 80PS four-cylinder ECOTEC turbo diesel, with two overhead camshafts and common rail direct fuel injection, produces a maximum torque of 170 Nm and a top speed of 108mph in saloon and hatchback models. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 61.4mpg (58.9mpg for estate). The added aerodynamic drag and roll resistance features in the highly-successful Astra ECO increase fuel efficiency to 64.2mpg – and raise top speed to 111mph. -
All New Toyota Camry 31 Aug 2001 (News)
The 2.4 litre engine uses Toyota's Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) technology to boost low speed torque and improve fuel consumption. Top speed is 130mph and acceleration fro 0-60 takes 9.2 seconds for the manual version. The Camry 2.4 leads its segment in terms of fuel consumption, with an excellent 32.8mpg on the European combined cycle. -
BMW Debuts Six New Cars 16 Feb 2001 (News)
First releases of the new Compact will be powered either by a British-built 1.6 litre 116bhp Valvetronic engine or the straight six 192bhp engine now designated 325ti. Valvetronic technology does away with throttle butterflies, instead controlling fuel/air mixture entering the engine by means of electronic infinitely variable timing of the inlet valves. An additional advantage is a very healthy torque output for a 1.6 of 133lb ft (180Nm). Combined fuel consumption of the new Compact 316ti is 40.9 and top speed 125mph. -

By adding Start/Stop tech to the existing Astra 2.0 CDTi Hatch, Vauxhall has not only maintained the model’s robust performance, but reduced its fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions, too. Compared with the outgoing 2.0 CDTi Hatch, the Start/Stop version’s fuel consumption improves by over 5mpg in the EC lab test combined cycle, from 57.6mpg to 62.8mpg. -

The Department for Transport (DfT), which is responsible for the legislation, stipulates that alternative fuel vans must be powered by “electricity, natural gas, biogas or hydrogen or [a combination of] hydrogen and electricity”. has launched its 2014 car reliability survey, and those who participate are in with the chance of winning £2500 – the equivalent of a year’s free fuel for an average family car. Last year 47,572 people responded to the Which? Car Survey, which found that the highest average repair costs were for the Land Rover Discovery 3, and that the Renault Megane Sport Tourer (2003-2009) had the lowest customer satisfaction rating. -
'Win-win' situation as latest Audi SUV is unveiled 2 Nov 2007 (News)
Its 3.0 TDI Quattro is a stylish and practical vehicle which keep an eye on the environment with impressive carbon efficiency figures. Audi has revealed that the car cuts carbon emissions and fuel consumption by more than 20 per cent. It added that the motor runs on an "extremely lightweight" engine - a 69 kg battery and a 40 kg motor. Audi commented that the vehicle combines higher power and torque with economy of fuel and lower carbon emissions. -
Curios: Citroen 2CV Sahara 15 Jan 2015 (News)
But Citroen reckoned a four-wheel drive version was a good idea, the end result being the 2CV Sahara of 1961 – which, instead of using a conventional all-wheel drive set-up, was fitted with an extra engine in the boot to ensure all-round traction. The two engines were completely independent units with their own gearboxes, fuel tanks and starter buttons. On flat surfaces just one of the engines could be used to save fuel, and on rough terrain the second engine (driving the rear wheels) could be engaged. To accommodate the extra engine, the floorpan was modified, while the suspension was also uprated to handle the hard work. -

As part of its Skyactiv-X, the next generation of Skyactiv, Mazda is developing a Spark Controlled Compression Ignition petrol engine. Most of the combustion of the fuel/air is by compression, as in a diesel. But to achieve a stoichiometric ‘lean burn’ air-fuel ratio of 30:1 all the fuel in the combustion chamber needs to burn simultaneously. This is achieved by adding spark ignition. -
