  • Worn front tyres with new rears 14 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I would expect understeer on the fronts if anything but i wonder if this twitch at the rear is the result of VSC braking or controlling the understeer?
  • Ford S-Max - Ford service stripped wheel studs 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I took my car in for a 3 year service and MOT to a Ford main dealer.  They tell me that in the course of taking off one of the rear wheels to replace the brake pads they stripped one of the 5 wheel studs. Apparently the wheel studs are integral to the hub and therefore they want to charge me for a new hub.  With parts and labour that'll be £289.60 thank you very much.
  • slowing down in the 21st century 11 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Reading a piece today where its now the norm to teach people to slow down with the brakes and not to use the gearbox. Well i have a message for these new world teachers of fashion--- --------how many accidents have you caused with this bad teaching this last week with all the snow we have had had?
  • What went wrong - Corvette abuse 5 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Warning - the following link shows a corvette being painfully abused! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ6atGhmVU8 So what went wrong? My guess is that he held the brakes too hard and didn't bring the clutch up quick enough. But there are some other possible causes - tracton control? super duper grippy tyres? LSD? faulty clutch? What do you think? - no need for comments about the stupidity of what the guy did, I think he already knows that :)
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 20 1.9d rumbling from front end 25 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have a rumbling sound coming from front end, imitates sound like loose exaust or engine sump cover but isnt I have checked! on accelerating only, but disapears if hand brake is pulled up, like something is resonating. the car was booked into a dealer to service and cure the noise they charged me £ 337 and did not cure it, told me to live with it for a while but refused to refund my money
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 01 1.6 Trailing arm bushes 23 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi, got a problem thats beginning to bug me. In the last month or so my car has been making a knocking noise when braking or going over bumps, I believe it is coming from the rear. My usual garage say that it is the trailing arm bushes and that both need doing at a cost of £150. Could it be anything else? Is this a likely cause and would you think the price is reasonable?
  • Saab 99 - The most modern car ever made? 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I saw a 1980 W reg one the other day and noticed:- 3 Circular heating controls Front and rear head rests Rear middle LED brake light Nice thick rimmed steering wheel and well padded in them middle Alloy wheels When you think the Brits were still making Cortinas and Marinas in 1980! I am just amazed at how modern design is for a 32 year old design.
  • Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - 02 2.4 d5 drivers wheel clicking 9 Jan 2009 (Forum)
my car has started making a clicking noise from the drivers wheel once i reach speeds over 40mph,the noise cannot be heard once window is down although i think this is due to wind noise and the clicking noise seems to be traveling through the car body.I have checked all bushes & brakes, everything seems ok. has anyone had similar problem?
  • Volkswagen Bora (1999 - 2006) - 2004 1.9TDi ESP Warning Light 10 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have pressed the ESP switch on the dashboard but the only way I have found to turn it off is to switch ignition off and restart. What should I check to find the fault, could it be brakes or something more sinister?
  • Honda CR-V (1997 - 2002) - 1999 2.0 Humming noise 6 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have a humming noise which can be heard when the car is stationary or when im braking. The noise is a lot louder when the air filter and the air intake tube are removed. If I tap the gas pedal the sound goes away but always returns. My mechanic had a quick look but is scratching his head.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - Car sitting for a while 16 May 2008 (Forum)

  • Peugeot 406 Coupe (1997 - 2003) - 99 V6 - Water collecting somewhere in the bodywork 22 Jan 2008 (Forum)
T reg, V6 Automatic, 3.0 litre I know it has been raining, but the car has been largely parked on my driveway, and not driven through any floods, at the moment when accelerating or braking you can hear a large amount of water sloshing around I think either in the passenger door or in the sills under the door passenger side. • towing at night 27 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Lats night (christmas night) while returning elderly relatives to their homes we came up behind a vehicle with its brake lights on,but traveling at 20 - 25 MPH.It was not clear at first what was happening, when I sused the situation and overtook the vehicle it was being towed by a vehicle without lights reving like mad, presumably to overcome the friction of the towed vehicles brakes. The tow rope was indeed a tow rope that looked like bailing twine. No sign on the towed vehicle at all to indicate it was being towed. -- rustbucket (the original)
  • getting up to speed on the hard shoulder 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
twice in the last few days I've encountered cars joining the motorway from the hard shoulder (after a breakdown or wheel change or ???) and they've moved straight onto lane 1 from rest. The consequential hard braking and swerving from traffic already travelling at speed luckily did not result in any crashes. Am I alone in thinking you should get up to speed on the hard shoulder and then merge with the traffic flow as if you were joining from a junction?
  • Vauxhall - Movano gear linkage issues 19 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Is this down to worn/stretched linkages? The gear lever is linked to the gear box with what looks like "bicycle brake cables" (sorry its late and I cannot find the appropriate name for them :) ) Is this a maintenance issue I can deal with myself, i.e tighten up or replace the linkages? Thanks, Dan
  • 99 414 Screech/Whistle from front o/side 22 Jul 2007 (Forum)
My 1999 Rover 414, 47k miles, not driven particularly had has developed an intermittent whistle / screech. It comes from the front offside when going around a bend at 30 to 40 mph ish. The front brake pads were changed 10k miles ago (11 months ago). Could it be a wheel bearing on the way out? The car was my fathers so everything is original except the tyres, exhaust & front pads.
  • Lights in general 2 May 2007 (Forum)
High intensity rear fog lights on long after any visibility problems, especially around town. Worst of all the number of drivers who sit at lights or simply in traffic with their foot on the brake pedal, dazzling everyone behind. Why? Cars still have handbrakes don't they? There must be some device that can prevent this, some inertia sensor or something. It must be a solveable problem. Concrete.

  • M reg Punto rear lights flash 17 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I have offered to have a look at my Neighbours rear lights on his M reg Punto this Sunday When he indicates right, the left indicator and both? brake lights flash dimly. I only saw the problem tonight, so did not see what happens when indicating right. I am guessing that the earth going to each light cluster needs checking/cleaning. Are there any other possible causes or any advice?
  • Help, I'm skidding on ice! I'll get out. 18 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Most freeze but some actually get out! tinyurl.com/yn9plh Obviously the best thing to do would be to release the brakes giving more chance to steer out. I feel smug knowing I would have done that because I did on two occasions but I was still lucky that the space I steered towards didn't have another vehicle there.
