I have offered to have a look at my Neighbours rear lights on his M reg Punto this Sunday
When he indicates right, the left indicator and both? brake lights flash dimly.
I only saw the problem tonight, so did not see what happens when indicating right.
I am guessing that the earth going to each light cluster needs checking/cleaning.
Are there any other possible causes or any advice?
Thanks
Ian

As you say, sounds remarkably like an Earth problem.

check all the metal touch on bulb connectors as well, the reason?? at this age the metal loses its twang so you fix the problem and after the 4th application of brake light time the metal goes chocolate again and causes maladies by literaly turning away from the pip on the bulb like melted plastic
i have made up new earth leads for these cars before now
the socket for undoing the back lights is in the tray on top of the spare wheel (two fasteners held behind bits of plastic behind the lights inside the car if you didnt know :-) )

Thanks for both of the quick replies.
If the bulb connectors have aged, is a new light cluster required?
Thanks for the tip on the socket - If it is still there after 12 years.
I don't know the car or the owner to be honest (said hello a few times in the 6 years I have lived here).
Thanks again

Fixed!
The earth on one side of the multiway connector going to the rear light assy looked like it had been arcing.
Cleaned it up and bent both sides of the connector in.
I think that the multiway connector might need replacing or modifying with a crimp terminal to the earth in the future.
