The clutch cable on my 95 306 TD was getting a bit jerky in operation and according to the car by car breakdown they have a tendancy to 'dry out' so I disconnected the cable at the clutch end. fitted a plastic bag around the cable and let some oil dribble through overnight. Next morning re-connected the cable and the clutch felt nice and smooth on the pedal. Problem now is that the clutch is slipping when it wasn't before. No oil escaped from the cable oiling process. The Haynes manual says that the clutch cable is self adjusting but I can't see how this could possibly work. Any ideas?

on some clutch cables the casings can swell when contaminated with oil and make things worse

just replace the cable they're only about £20, the slipping may be it adjusting during use
