Is there a known brake disc wear issue on the Ford Kuga?

Is there an issue with the Ford Kuga electric hand brake causing scoring on the rear wheel discs? I bought this brand new car exactly 12 months ago at the end of May 2024. Its first annual service ‘Health Check’ (Ford Convenience Check) was carried out last week. The mileage done was 3840. As a careful and very experienced driver I expected a complete clean bill of health upon its return. However, the diagnostic report stated that there was an amber warning on the two rear disc brakes indicating scoring.

“Items requiring attention soon”. No statement about what was meant by ‘soon’ – although a follow up on 05/12/2025 was given on the report. Everything else checked was okay as expected.

I saw there was a problem and thought that, as a one year old car, it would still be under warranty. Apparently not. “Wear and tear” given as the reason by both the dealership and Ford UK customer services. The bill for replacing the discs is £526.84.

A little online research indicated that some other owners have similar problems and a possible cause was the electric handbrake engaging the discs. A few were replaced under warranty but not all.

We have seen reports from other owners of this vehicle that have experienced the same issue and at low mileages, which would suggest the problem is not uncommon. It is disappointing to hear of the response you received regarding this problem - while brake discs are typically considered as consumable items that will eventually need replacing, it is inconceivable that 3840 miles would wear out a set of brake discs under normal operation, and scoring indicates that the braking system is not working as it should. We would suggest going back to the dealer and if necessary Ford UK, making these points and pressing them for a replacement under warranty.
